Port Royal is a city located at the end of the Palisadoes at the mouth of the Kingston Harbour, in southeastern Jamaica. Founded in 1518, it was the centre of shipping commerce in the Caribbean Sea during the latter half of the 17th century. It was destroyed by an earthquake in 1692 and a subsequent tsunami, and fires. Severe hurricanes have regularly damaged it. Another severe earthquake occurred in 1907.
Port Royal was once home to privateers employed to nip at Habsburg Spain's empire when smaller European powers dared not directly make war on Spain. As a port city, it was notorious for its gaudy displays of wealth and loose morals. It was a popular homeport for the English and Dutch sponsored privateers to spend their treasure during the 17th century. When those governments abandoned the practice of issuing letters of marque to privateers against the Spanish treasure fleets and possessions in the later 16th century, many of the crews turned pirate and used the city as their main base during the 17th century. Pirates from around the world congregated at Port Royal, coming from waters as far away as Madagascar.
Jamaica (i/dʒəˈmeɪkə/) is an island country situated in the Caribbean Sea, comprising the third-largest island of the Greater Antilles. The island, 10,990 square kilometres (4,240 sq mi) in area, lies about 145 kilometres (90 mi) south of Cuba, and 191 kilometres (119 mi) west of Hispaniola, the island containing the nation-states of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Jamaica is the fifth-largest island country in the Caribbean.
Previously inhabited by the indigenous Arawak and Taíno peoples, the island came under Spanish rule following the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1494. Named Santiago, it remained a possession of Spain until 1655, when England (later Great Britain) conquered the island and renamed it Jamaica. Under British rule, Jamaica became a leading sugar exporter, with its plantation economy highly dependent on slaves imported from Africa, followed later by Chinese and Indian indentured labour. All slaves were fully emancipated in 1838, with independence from the United Kingdom achieved on 6 August 1962.
Port Antonio is the capital of the parish of Portland on the northeastern coast of Jamaica, about 60 miles (100 km) from Kingston. It had a population of 12,285 in 1982 and 13,246 in 1991. It is the island's third largest port, famous as a shipping point for bananas and coconuts, as well as one of its most important tourist attractions, tourism being a major contributor to the town’s economy.
Port Antonio was a sleepy coastal town until the 1880s, when Lorenzo Dow Baker started the banana trade in Jamaica and successfully promoted Port Antonio as a destination for wealthy American travelers. "Portie" became a boom town. The banana trade and the tourists who came in the banana boats, was once so large that at one time, weekly sailing from Port Antonio was greater than weekly sailing from the great English port of Liverpool.
The island was glamorized by Hollywood as a model of paradise in movies of the 1940s and '50s, such as Club Paradise and Cocktail. This image was added to by the arrival of movie star Errol Flynn in 1946 when his yacht, the Zaca washed ashore in bad weather. He subsequently bought nearby Navy Island, part of historic Fort George in Port Antonio as well as hundreds of acres of farmland along the Portland coast.
Montego Bay is the capital of the parish of St. James and the second largest city in Jamaica by area and the fourth by population (after Kingston, Spanish Town and Portmore).
Montego Bay is a tourist destination with duty-free shopping, a cruise line terminal and several beaches. The city is backed by low mountains.
When Christopher Columbus for the first time visited the island in 1494, he named the bay Golfo de Buen Tiempo ("Fair Weather Gulf"). The name "Montego Bay" is believed to have originated as a corruption of the Spanish word manteca ("lard"), allegedly because during the Spanish period it was the port where lard, leather, and beef were exported. Jamaica was a colony of Spain from 1511 until 1655, when Oliver Cromwell's Caribbean expedition, the Western Design, drove the Spanish from the island.
During the epoch of slavery, from the mid-17th century until 1834, and well into the 20th century, the town functioned primarily as a sugarcane port. The island's last major slave revolt, the Christmas Rebellion or Baptist War (1831–1832) took place in the area around Montego Bay; the leader of the revolt, Samuel Sharpe, was hanged there in 1832. In 1975, Sharpe was proclaimed a national hero of Jamaica, and the main square of the town was renamed in his honor.

This is a complete port tour of Royal Caribbean's custom built port of call in Jamaica, Falmouth. Most ports are developed by a city or island and grow over time. Falmouth on the other hand was created by a cruise line as a new destination for passengers. It is built on a new peninsula near the village of Falmouth about half way between Ocho Rios and Montego Bay. The port itself is fully developed and seperated from the rest of Jamaica. All workers within the port must be approved by Royal Caribbean and granted access to the area making it significantly more secure and welcoming an area than the other ports of call within Jamaica. The port first opened in the Fall of 2010 after being delayed by over 6 months from it's original Spring date as part of the launch of Oasis of the Seas. We vis...
The cruise port of Falmouth Jamaica was festive- full of shops, activity, and music. If you are not going on an excursion, you can certainly spend several hours just perusing the port area. There were plenty of choices when it came to shopping at Falmouth Jamaica cruise port. Some of the main attractions there include: * Appleton Estate Jamaica Rum Factory * Margaritaville with a cool pirate ship facade * Live dancing performances by locals * Crafts Market with handmade souvenirs This was from December of 2016 of our Western Caribbean cruise. Our cruise ship, the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas, was docked next to Disney Fantasy- a very impressive ship as well! Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, is located on the southeastern coast of the island. There are two major sections to this city: 'downtown' and 'uptown,' also referred to as 'New Kingston.' Kingston was for some time Jamaica's only city and is still the commercial and cultural capital. You will notice that the city is assigned the equivalent of zip codes, (Kingston 5, Kingston 10, etc.) which is a good representation of how truly large this city is, especially for an island such as Jamaica. Port Royal was once called "the richest and wickedest city in the world". During the 17th century, it was the virtual capital of Jamaica, and also a headquarters to the real pirates of the Caribbean, buccaneers and pirates who brought in much of the treasure they looted on the Spanish Main. Henry Morgan, chief among the buccaneers, was later knighted and made Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. Today with the warships and the soldiers gone, Port Royal has become a quiet fishing village, but it is one of the most important historical and archaeological sites in Jamaica—it was one of England's biggest naval bases in the Caribbean, a base so strong and powerful enemies dared not attack it. In June of 1692 Port Royal was destroyed by an earthquake and tsunami. A significant amount of the town s...

Once known as the 'Wickedest City on Earth,' Jamaica's famed Port Royal is undoubtedly one of the island's most captivating historical sites still standing. The town was once a haven for buccaneers and pirates, including the infamous Sir Henry Morgan. From Port Royal, these privateers preyed upon and plundered the heavily laden treasure fleets departing from the Spanish Main. In this webisode Calee, Stephen and baby Nyla visit the famous town.

A Travel Guide to Jordan Jordan is an extraordinary country. Although small in size and young in terms of nation state, it is blessed with some of the regions most revered historical treasures, some of its most spectacular scenery and some of its kindest and most hospitable people. It has a delicious cuisine, a good tourist infrastructure – with some great accommodation and knowledgeable guides – and under the much respected royal family, a stable government. Throughout its short history, Jordan has bucked the trends of its neighbours; by welcoming the foreign traveller with open arms, and gallons of sweet mint tea, in many ways it continues to do so. Amman is a lively, liberal city, modern in character, yet with one foot rooted firmly in the past. With a history dating back to Neolithic...

Royal Caribbean has owned the peninsula of Labadee as a private resort for decades but in recent years they've started to make changes. Long considered a beach getaway passengers would tender onto the peninsula and find a vacant beach oasis. For the past decade though Royal Caribbean has added new attractions including a Zip Line, Water Slide, and Rollercoaster. The biggest reinvention though came when the entire island was reimagined with the addition of a permanent docking pier allowing for two ships to dock at once. This tour was filmed on January 18th, 2014 while both the Grandeur of the Seas and Explorer of the Seas were docked. This accounts for roughly 6,000 passengers on the property.
