Central Asia is the core region of the Asian continent and stretches from the Caspian Sea in the west to China in the east and from Afghanistan in the south to Russia in the north. It is also sometimes referred to as Middle Asia, and, colloquially, "the 'stans" (as the six countries generally considered to be within the region all have names ending with the Persian suffix "-stan", meaning "land of") and is within the scope of the wider Eurasian continent.
In modern contexts, all definitions of Central Asia include these five republics of the former Soviet Union: Kazakhstan (pop. 17 million), Kyrgyzstan (5.7 million), Tajikistan (8.0 million), Turkmenistan (5.2 million), and Uzbekistan (30 million), for a total population of about 66 million as of 2013–2014. Afghanistan (pop. 31.1 million) is also sometimes included.
Various definitions of Central Asia's exact composition exist, and not one definition is universally accepted. Despite this uncertainty in defining borders, the region does have some important overall characteristics. For one, Central Asia has historically been closely tied to its nomadic peoples and the Silk Road. As a result, it has acted as a crossroads for the movement of people, goods, and ideas between Europe, Western Asia, South Asia, and East Asia.

Uzbekistan is significantly rich in history where Samarkand was conquered by Alexander the Great. Islam was introduced by Arabs in the 8th-9th century. In the early thirteenth century, that state was invaded by Mongols, led by Genghis Khan. Uzbekistan is proud home to a spellbinding arsenal of architecture and ancient cities, with the fascinating history of the Silk Road. In terms of sights alone, Uzbekistan is Central Asia's biggest draw and most impressive showstopper. Uzbekistan is also an extremely friendly country where hospitality remains an essential element of daily life. We were genuinely welcome by all people we met during the journey.

World Bank economists note in concrete, dire numbers what people across emerging Europe and Central Asia are living with daily: The financial crisis in the region is far from over. The numbers are bleak. 11.4 million across the region are unemployed, as opposed to 8.3 million last year. Poverty rates will rise by 15 million...before the crisis hit, economists figured 15 million people would climb out of poverty this year.
Central Asia is most notable for being home to the 'stans': Rugged countries with limited arable land, historically coveted for their position between Europe and East Asia, rather than for their resources (although petroleum and natural gas reserves in the region are becoming more and more important). They are home to generally poor, primarily Muslim, historically nomadic, mostly Turkic-speaking peoples (the exception is Tajikistan).
India and China new players in Central Asia’s ‘Great Game’ NEW DELHI: A great game is unfolding in resources-rich, but landlocked, Central Asia, where China through its one-belt-one-road (OBOR) initiative is attempting to harness maximum mineral and hydrocarbon wealth as well as grow the market for its goods. India, not to be left behind, has also embarked on a Connect Central Asia policy, trying to overcome a disadvantage it has: lack of direct connectivity to the region. While oil and uranium rich Kazakhstan is an old partner, Uzbekistan, which has historical links with India, is emerging as the next big partner for New Delhi in the region. In the Bible, the name of Scythians sounds as "Ashkuzi", which is a slight Semite distortion of the name of a Turkic tribe "As-kishi". By the words of Herodotos (484-425 BC), Scythians thought that they were born in a deserted land from the first man called Targitaios, whose parents were a daughter of the river Dnieper (Borisphenes) and Scythian god of thunder corresponding to Greek Zeus. Targitaios had three sons: Lipoxaios, Arpaxaios and Kolaxaios. The first of them gave birth to Scythians Auchates, the second to Katiares, and the third to Parallates. Their common name was Scolotes. We can immediately see that all these names are definitely of the Turkic origin and can easily be explained on the basis of Karachai-Balkarian and other Turkic languages and dialects. The very word "Scolot...

In rural Kyrgyzstan men still marry their women the old-fashioned way: by abducting them off the street and forcing them to be their wife. Bride kidnapping is a supposedly ancient custom that's made a major comeback since the fall of Communism and now accounts for nearly half of all marriages in some parts. We traveled to the Kyrgyz countryside to follow/aid and abet a young groom named Kubanti as he surprised his teenage girlfriend Nazgul with the gift of marriage/kidnapping. The Plague Reaches the Middle East European observers were fascinated but not too worried when the Black Death struck the western rim of Central Asia and the Middle East. One recorded that "India was depopulated; Tartary, Mesopotamia, Syria, Armenia were covered with dead bodies; the Kurds fled in vain to the mountains." However, they would soon become participants rather than observers in the world's worst pandemic. In "The Travels of Ibn Battuta," the great traveler noted that as of 1345, "the number that died daily in Damascus (Syria) had been two thousand," but the people were able to defeat the plague through prayer. In 1349, the holy city of Mecca was hit by the plague, likely brought in by infected pilgrims on the hajj. The Moroccan historian Ibn Khaldun, whose parents died of th...

Traversing near fire blazing 45 degree deserts and gasping for oxygen along the unforgiving terrain of the highway many refer to as 'The Roof of the World' with only a small backpack and hybrid bicycle was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. I have created this short documentary film to share with everyone the emotional highs, lows and beautiful scenery along with providing a glimpse into the daily lives of some of the most hospitable people I have ever met. Enjoy!
