Christopher Scott "Chris" Thile (/ˈθiːliː/ THEE-lee; born February 20, 1981) is an American mandolinist, singer, and songwriter, best known for his work in the progressive acoustic trio Nickel Creek and the acoustic folk/progressive bluegrass quintet Punch Brothers. He is a 2012 MacArthur Fellow. Beginning in 2016, he will become the host of A Prairie Home Companion.
The three members of Nickel Creek met in 1989 at Carlsbad, California's That Pizza Place, listening to weekly bluegrass shows with their parents. Soon they were taking lessons and then playing festivals and recording albums. Their first, Little Cowpoke, was released in 1994. Later albums included Nickel Creek and This Side, which went platinum and won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album. In 2005, Nickel Creek released Why Should the Fire Die?, which received massive critical acclaim and sold 250,000 units.
In 2003, Thile married fashion designer Jesse Meighan. The couple divorced in 2004, after 18 months of marriage.
The Late Show may refer to:
Punch Brothers is a band consisting of Chris Thile (mandolin), Gabe Witcher (fiddle/violin), Noam Pikelny (banjo), Chris Eldridge (guitar), and Paul Kowert (bass). Their style has been described as "bluegrass instrumentation and spontaneity in the strictures of modern classical" as well as "American country-classical chamber music."
Thile formed the band in 2006 to record the album How to Grow a Woman from the Ground. In an interview with the Nashville City Paper, Thile described the formation of the band:
Initially the band was known as The How to Grow a Band. In 2007, the band officially changed its name first to The Tensions Mountain Boys and then settled on Punch Brothers. The band's name comes from the critical line of an earworm jingle that is the centerpiece of Mark Twain's short story "A Literary Nightmare". The chorus of the jingle consists of two lines, "Punch, brother, punch with care, punch in the presence of the passenjare", that are said to be the mantra of railroad conductors.
Chris is a short form of various names including Christopher, Christian, Christina, Christine, and Christos. Unlike these names, however, it does not indicate the person's gender although it is much more common for males to have this name than it is for females.
It is the preferred form of the full name of such notable individuals as Chris Tucker and Chris Penn. To find an article about one of these people, see List of all pages beginning with "Chris".
The word is also part of phrases, including Tropical Storm Chris, Ruth's Chris Steak House, and many more which refer to notable people, places, and things. For a list of these, see All pages with titles containing chris.
Edgar Meyer (born November 24, 1960) is an American bassist, multi-instrumentalist and composer. His styles include classical, bluegrass, newgrass, and jazz. Meyer has worked as a session musician in Nashville, part of various chamber groups, a composer, and an arranger. His collaborators have spanned a wide range of musical styles and talents; among them are Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, Jerry Douglas, Béla Fleck, Zakir Hussain, Sam Bush, James Taylor, Chris Thile, Mike Marshall, Mark O'Connor, Alison Krauss, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Guy Clark, and the trio Nickel Creek.
Meyer participates yearly in a bluegrass super group in Telluride, Colorado, at their annual Bluegrass Festival known as the House Band. The band also consists of Meyer's contemporaries Sam Bush, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, and Stuart Duncan.
Meyer grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He learned to play the double bass from his father, the late Edgar Meyer, Sr., who directed the string orchestra program for the local public school system. Meyer later went on to Indiana University to study with Stuart Sankey.

Spoiler alert: The Punch Brothers came to the Tiny Desk on Chris Thile's birthday. We made him a cake and gave him an NPR surprise! This wasn't the first time the brilliant mandolinist had brought a project to my desk — it was his fourth. The last time was with his longtime band Nickel Creek, but also with his new braces. So the cake we presented here was inscribed "Brace Yourself Chris Happy Birthday." He blew out the candles and then, along with this versatile and talented band, rocked our world. Punch Brothers mixes the worlds of bluegrass, pop and classical. It's a tough combination to imagine, an even harder one to make work, but this band of fiddler, Gabe Witcher, Noam Pikelny on banjo, guitarist Chris Eldridge and bassist Paul Kowert make the unimaginable contagious and fun. Chris Thile covers Josh Ritter's 'Another New World' @ Whelan's - Dublin, September 2011. It’s a vivacious crowd, and they strike that balance….in that golden zone between participating and absorbing.” The all-star quintet performed a number of tracks from their fourth full-length album, The Phosphorescent Blues (released earlier this year), as well as fan-favorites ("Rye Whiskey”) and outstanding covers (Radiohead’s "Kid A”). Locking doors, spotless pores, finding comfort in a total bore, the number four,
Genealogical lore, nothing feels good unless I've felt it before.
The neighbor's gay, he shouldn't be that way,
I'm gonna treat him like a person but not today, when I'm old and grey, and
he's dying of AIDS, I'm gonna stop by his bed to remind him to pray.
Melvin is locking doors
He makes everything a chore
And he don't really care no more
Melvin is locking doors
Nervous when my little woman friend makes me kinda wanna be a man again.
Don't wanna bend, better to offend, but I'll get pissed when she looks at other men.
Melvin is locking doors
He makes everything a chore
And he don't really care no more
Melvin is locking doors
Locking doors, salting sores, when one wimp winces we'll win this war,
Show me some gore, man I'm so hardcore, but it doesn't feel good unless I've felt it before.
