Platelet-rich plasma

Platelet-rich plasma (Abbreviation: PRP) is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets. As a concentrated source of autologous platelets, PRP contains (and releases through degranulation) several different growth factors and other cytokines that stimulate healing of bone and soft tissue.

History

PRP was first developed in the 1970s and first used in Italy in 1987 in an open heart surgery procedure. PRP therapy began gaining popularity in the mid 1990s. It has since been applied to many different medical fields such as cosmetic surgery, dentistry, sports medicine and pain management.

Components

The efficacy of certain growth factors in healing various injuries and the concentrations of these growth factors found within PRP are the theoretical basis for the use of PRP in tissue repair. The platelets collected in PRP are activated by the addition of thrombin and calcium chloride, which induces the release of the mentioned factors from alpha granules. Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is plasma that has many more platelets than normal blood plasma. In this procedure, a certain amount of blood is drawn from the patient. The components of blood are then separated, and thus concentrated, in a process called centrifugation. As PRP is taken from the patient’s own blood, the risks associated with PRP injections are minimal. PRP therapy is most effective in treating chronic tendon injuries, notably tennis elbow - a common injury of the tendons on the outside of the elbow. However, its effectiveness in treating acute injuries and other conditions remains to be proven. Nevertheless, PRP therapy is gaining popularity as it is a low risk treatment and has potential to improve healing.

Dr. Weiner narrates his treatment with PRP and ACell. This injection leads to thicker, faster, denser hair growth. The PRP contains growth factors which stimulate the hair follicles which are dormant or aging to get revitalized. The ACell is a stem cell stimulant. The procedure takes about 1.25 hours and is very comfortable after the lidocaine injections. It is important that the concentration of the PRP be 6X, 6 times the normal blood concentration for maximum benefit. 60-120 cc of blood is drawn to get 8-16cc of PRP. Evidence shows that the harder pitchers throw, the more likely significant tears are to develop, and the more likely they are to eventually require surgery to fix those tears ... Those pitchers did not receive platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, injections, which Ohtani did after his diagnosis ... ....
