Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James presented Spencer Stone with the Purple Heart in recognition of the injuries he suffered, and he also received the Airman’s Medal. Alex Skarlatos was awarded the Soldier’s Medal, and Anthony Sadler was given the Secretary of Defense’s Medal of Valor.

2015 Thalys train attack
On 21 August 2015, a shooting and stabbing incident took place on board a Thalys train in France on its way from Amsterdam to Paris. The train had just crossed the border from Belgium into France and was traveling in Oignies (department of Pas-de-Calais) when the perpetrator opened fire in a train carriage before being subdued by passengers, one of whom he stabbed. Including the assailant, four people were injured, none fatally. The incident is believed by French police to be an Islamist terrorist attack, although the gunman claimed the motivation was robbery due to hunger. Several people who subdued the attacker were awarded France's highest decoration, the Legion of Honour and other awards.
Attack
On 21 August, at approximately 17:45 CEST (5:45 p.m.) 25-year-old Moroccan man Ayoub El Khazzani reportedly exited the toilets on car No. 12 of Thalys train 9364 traveling from Amsterdam to Paris, shortly after the train had crossed the border from Belgium into France. He was shirtless and armed with an AKM assault rifle, for which he had nine magazines and a total of 270 rounds of ammunition. He was also carrying a pistol and a bottle of petrol.

The three young Americans who thwarted a gunman on a Paris-bound passenger train last month got their moment in Washington D.C. The three last month subdued a man with ties to radical Islam who boarded the train with a Kalashnikov rifle, a pistol and a box cutter. A British businessman and a French-American also have been praised for their efforts to stop the gunman.

Alta Velocidad Española is a service of high-speed rail in Spain operated by Renfe Operadora, the Spanish national railway company, at speeds of up to 310 km/h. Alta Velocidad Española translates to "Spanish High Speed", but the initials are also a play on the word ave, meaning "bird". As of June 2013, the Spanish AVE system is the longest HSR network in Europe with 3,100 km and the second in the world, after China's. AVE trains run on a network of high-speed rail track owned and managed by Adif, where other high-speed and mid-speed services also operate. Katie Couric joins U.Va.'s 2012 Graduates in a "Wahoowah!"
Journalist Katie Couric bonds with the University of Virginia's 2012 graduates by joining in a "Wahoowah!," the University's celebrated cheer. As a 1979 U.Va. alum, it's easy for Couric to share the enthusiasm. She also shares some advice, telling graduates to prepare for the three 'Rs' -- risk, rejection and resilience. Graduates will need to take risks going forward, they will face rejection, and they must be resilient in continuing to forge ahead. In a particularly touching note, she mentions the resilience of Lynette Jones, a graduate in the College of Arts & Sciences, who is undergoing treatment for cancer. Lynette gets a huge round of applause from classmates, and she's clearly grateful that she's able to be part of today's ceremony and celebration.

At long last, the 98%-finished video of our trip in April 2012 on Private Car NYC-3, from NYC Penn Station to Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Chicago, and back to New York. There were eight of us and also the car owner, Lovett Smith, a source of great knowledge, stories, and history. (He was also the one to deal with Amtrak when questions came up.) He has rail friends in every city! This cut is heavy on the trains and the station activity, made necessary by the fact that most of us on board are railfan types. If you get bored by the sequences of backing into New Orleans and Chicago (you should have seen them before I cut them down), you will have to skip forward! This cut is heavy on the trains and the station activity, made necessary by the fact that most of us on board are railfan types. If you get bored by the sequences of backing into New Orleans and Chicago (you should have seen them before I cut them down), you will have to skip forward! But you will like the New Orleans music, which was very hard to cut out, despite some jumpy cuts and bouncy camera work. (Hey, it's my first feature-length video.)
I'll try for a very short version soon, but don't wait up for it. Apology to non-participants for all the still photos up front!
I left out the dinner-table sequences; I think you had to be there. Will get them to my fellow travelers sometime. Meanwhile, it was a wonderful and memorable trip in a car that was such fun to be traveling in. Thank you for the great times!
