Sony Centre

Sony Centre is a chain of stores in Europe which sell electrical goods made by manufacturer Sony. Many of their stores on Mainland Europe have been recently been re-branded to Sony Centre after being called Sony Galleria. The Sony Centre has many stores in the United Kingdom which includes the biggest in Staines-Upon-Thames, another in Harrow and another one in Milton Keynes.

There are also Sony Centres in Australia, with a notable one being at Sydney's World Square.

One can find eight Sony Centres in Norway, with three of them in the Oslo area, two in Bergen and one in Lillestrøm, Skien and Stavanger.

In Romania, the chain is named Sony Center and it has 7 stores of its own and two franchised stores.

Sony Centres are not part of the Sony group; the name is used by a number of separate entities. The Sony brand and logo, and the Sony Centre name, are trademarks of Sony Corporation and used under licence.

On the night of 8 August 2011, the Sony distribution centre in Enfield, London was destroyed in an arson attack during the 2011 England riots.

Sony Center

The Sony Center is a JAHN designed Sony-sponsored building complex located at the Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, Germany. It opened in 2000 and houses Sony's European headquarters.

History

The site was originally a bustling city centre in the early 20th century. Most of the buildings were destroyed or damaged during World War II. From 1961 on, most of the area became part of the No Man's Land of the Berlin Wall, resulting in the destruction of the remaining buildings. After the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, the square became the focus of attention again, as a large (some 60 hectares), attractive location which had suddenly become available in the centre of a major European capital city. As part of a redevelopment effort for the area, the center was constructed. The centre was designed by Helmut Jahn and Peter Walker as landscape architect and construction was completed in 2000 at a total cost of €750M. In February 2008 Sony sold Berlin's Sony Center for less than €600M to a group of German and US investment funds, including investment bank Morgan Stanley, Corpus Sireo and an affiliate of The John Buck Company .
