The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is a 3,000-mile (4,800 km) inland waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States. Some sections of the waterway consist of natural inlets, saltwater rivers, bays, and sounds, while others are artificial canals. It provides a navigable route along its length without many of the hazards of travel on the open sea.
The shipping hazards and safe havens of the Atlantic coast have been well known and appreciated since colonial times, and considered of great commercial, communication, and military importance to both the colonial power and the newly established, independent United States. The physical features of the eastern coast were advantageous for intracoastal development, resulting from erosion and deposition of sediment over its geologic history, but also enhanced and redistributed by the action of the Atlantic ocean currents along it. Since the coastline represented the national border and commerce of the time was chiefly by water, the fledgling US government established a degree of national control over it. Inland transportation to supply the coasting trade at the time however, was less known and virtually undeveloped, but when new lands and their favorable river systems were added in 1787, a radically new and free national policy was established for their development and transportation use. Over time, internal improvements of natural coastal and inland waterways would develop into the Great Loop, which allows for waterborne circumnavigation of the eastern continental United States, using minimal ocean travel, with the Intracoastal Waterway providing its eastern end.

Taking the Intracoastal waterway on a 2 day trip from Beaufort, North Carolina, to Norfolk, Virginia. This route is commonly taken amongst boaters to avoid foul weather and rough seas offshore Cape Hatteras. It's a beautiful and scenic ride with lots of wildlife. We stopped at the famous Coinjock Marina in Coinjock, North Carolina for an over-night stay and the Captains cut Prime Rib dinner, a tradition, or "right of passage" dinner for new Captains in the industry.
In this video, we say farewell to the Chesapeake, and we begin traveling South via the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway, AKA... The Ditch. From here, there are 1000 miles of "The Ditch" for us to navigate before we reach Miami. Still, there are so many great sights to see along the way that we are really looking forward to this part of the trip. By the way - things are going just great! The only regret we have at this point is that we didn't make the decision to embark on this adventure a whole lot sooner. It's just plain amazing in so many ways. Thanks for watching!! If you are planning a trip down the Intracoastal Waterway or ICW here is a tip for dealing with overtaking traffic. Wait till they get up close astern then slow your boat right down. This allows the overtaking vessel to slow as well and pass you with the least wake. We found boaters to be very courteous and friendly. Traveling the ICW can be a very sociable trip. You will meet some new friends for sure! Video compilation of my various times on or around the Intracoastal Waterway in south Florida. The Intracoastal is a channel of water that runs parallel to the ocean, separated by the A1A. In order to get to the ocean you have to pass over the Intracoastal via various drawbridges that open at designated times. So in the same way that encountering TriRails, Amtraks and freight trains is a regular part of life in this region, so is the Intracoastal and the bridges. :) A large portion of the video was taken while riding the Fort Lauderdale water taxi on a couple of occasions, which begins in downtown on the New River, before eventually connecting up to the Intracoastal. There are three main types of water taxi boats used - the smallest, which holds about 15 people, the mid size wh...
