Present perfect

The present perfect is a grammatical combination of the present tense and the perfect aspect that is used to express a past event that has present consequences. The term is used particularly in the context of English grammar to refer to forms like "I have left".

The forms are present because they use the present tense of the auxiliary verb have, and perfect because they use that auxiliary in combination with the past participle of the main verb. (Other perfect constructions also exist, such as the past perfect: "I had eaten.")

Analogous forms are found in some other languages and may also be described as present perfects although they often have other names such as the German Perfekt, the French passé composé and the Italian passato prossimo. They may also have different ranges of usage, in all three of the languages just mentioned, the forms in question serve as a general past tense, at least for completed actions.

In English, completed actions in many contexts are referred to using the simple past verb form rather than the present perfect.

English grammar

English grammar is the structure of expressions in the English language. This includes the structure of words, phrases, clauses and sentences.

There are historical, social, cultural and regional variations of English. Divergences from the grammar described here occur in some dialects of English. This article describes a generalized present-day Standard English, the form of speech found in types of public discourse including broadcasting, education, entertainment, government, and news reporting, including both formal and informal speech. There are certain differences in grammar between the standard forms of British English, American English and Australian English, although these are inconspicuous compared with the lexical and pronunciation differences.

Word classes and phrases

Eight types of word ("word classes" or "parts of speech") are distinguished in English: nouns, determiners, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions. (Determiners, traditionally classified along with adjectives, have not always been regarded as a separate part of speech.) Interjections are another word class, but these are not described here as they do not form part of the clause and sentence structure of the language.

Perfection

Perfection is, broadly, a state of completeness and flawlessness.

The term perfection is used to designate a range of diverse, if often kindred, concepts. These concepts have historically been addressed in a number of discrete disciplines, notably mathematics, physics, chemistry, ethics, aesthetics, ontology, and theology.

Term and concept

The form of the word long fluctuated in various languages. The English language had the alternates, "perfection" and the Biblical "perfectness."

The word "perfection" derives from the Latin "perfectio", and "perfect" — from "perfectus." These expressions in turn come from "perficio" — "to finish", "to bring to an end." "Perfectio(n)" thus literally means "a finishing", and "perfect(us)" — "finished", much as in grammatical parlance ("perfect").

Many modern languages have adopted their terms for the concept of "perfection" from the Latin: the French "parfait" and "perfection"; the Italian "perfetto" and "perfezione"; the Spanish "perfecto" and "perfección"; the English "perfect" and "perfection"; the Russian "совершенный" (sovyershenniy) and "совершенcтво" (sovyershenstvo); the Croatian and Serbian "savršen" and "savršenstvo"; the Czech "dokonalost"; the Slovak "dokonaly" and "dokonalost"; the Polish "doskonały" and "doskonałość."

Present

The present (or now) is the time that is associated with the events perceived directly and in the first time, not as a recollection (perceived more than once) or a speculation (predicted, hypothesis, uncertain). It is a period of time between the past and the future, and can vary in meaning from being an instant to a day or longer. In radiocarbon dating, the "present" is defined as AD 1950.

It is sometimes represented as a hyperplane in space-time, typically called "now", although modern physics demonstrates that such a hyperplane cannot be defined uniquely for observers in relative motion. The present may also be viewed as a duration (see specious present).

Society and religion

Contemporary history describes the historical timeframe that is immediately relevant to the present time and is a certain perspective of modern history.

In Yoga

In Patanjali Yoga Sutras the first sutra defines Yoga as 'NOW'. By 'Chitta Vrithhi nirodha' (restraining the thought-streams) the present can be experienced. The moment a person thinks, he is recalling his past experience. He will never know the present. Being conscious or being aware is the only way to know the present.

Here is an English grammar lesson about the form of the present perfect tense. In this lesson, you will learn the affirmative form (positive), question form and negative form of the present perfect tense. I also explain the contracted forms for the affirmative and negative. The present perfect is formed by a combination of the auxiliary verb "have" in the present followed by the past participle of the main verb. Example: "I have cleaned." The past participle of regular verbs is formed by adding "ed" to the base form. I also give you the spelling rules of forming the past participle of other regular verbs. The past participle of irregular verbs have no rules at all and you must simply learn them by heart when you learn a new verb. Some examples are be - been, find - found, do - done, go - gone. The position of adverbs whne using the present perfect is very important. Generally we place the adverb between the auxiliary verb "have" and the past participle of the main verb. Example "He has JUST left the office." At the end of this English grammar lesson, there are some exercises to test your understanding. To describe an experience The present perfect tense connects the past with the present. When using this verb tense, we can be talking about an action or event that occurred in the past but will be referring to how it relates to the present. We use the present perfect when describing certain life experiences. Imagine that you and your friends are at university and you’ve just come back to campus from the summer vacation; you are all very excited to tell your friends about your amazing internships or the beautiful places you went or the wonderful times you had with your family. One member of the bunch says, This summer I hiked Mt. Everest. Not to be outdone, you might say, I have climbed Mt. Everest and several other high peaks. Again, we use the present perfect to describe actions and events which occurred in the past, which are also of particular importance in the present moment. Examples: I have boated on three of the world’s longest rivers. We have never sailed the Atlantic Ocean. Lance Armstrong has won the Tour de France multiple times. Jessie has been to Disneyworld seven times. 2 To describe changes over a period of time We can also use the present perfect to describe events which occurred gradually and over time in the past, especially when these had a lasting influence on the present. As a further example, imagine that you’re low on petrol (gas in American English) and you stop to refuel. You notice that the gallon/litre has become very expensive recently and exclaim, Gas prices have really risen lately! Or, to provide another example, imagine you have an aunt you haven’t seen in some years. When you do see her again after about 10 years and she has become rather fat, you may say, Wow, Auntie, you have gained weight! Keep in mind, however, these are just grammar concept explanations and not a guide for how to maneuver family reunions. Examples: Jeffrey’s Spanish has improved since we spoke last. Erica’s heart has recovered from the illness. Timmy’s grades have worsened since last year. Our house’s value has gone up recently. 3 To describe accomplishments Accomplishments, especially big ones, usually have a lasting influence on the present; we use the present perfect to describe and relate these accomplishments and milestones. Examples: The United States has sent humans to the moon. The national GDP has grown by 3.2 percent! Ireland has won freedom! Grandma has perfected her cornbread recipe. A continuing action that started in the past Actions or events that are still occurring, but which began in the past, also require the use of the present perfect. While this type of situation often involves describing an accomplishment as well, it doesn’t have to, nor does it even have to be positive in nature. Imagine you were stuck on an island all alone without any personal items for a very long time, and one day, exasperated, you said to yourself, I have lived on this deserted island for six years. This would hardly be a positive situation; unless, of course, you enjoy solitude, in which case you probably go back to your cave and play with the pet parrot you’ve adopted. Examples: Jessie has played guitar for ten years. Emma has been a carpenter for a long time. Jim and Hank have worked at the newspaper for almost their entire lives. I have stayed awake for 13 hours.

The present perfect tense might be a hard tense for learners of English and students often have a hard time keeping the present perfect tense apart from the past simple tense. In this English grammar lesson I am going to show you how to form a present perfect tense, and when to use a present perfect tense. But before we get started it's good to know how to conjugate the verb 'to have'. For the singular forms: I have you have he has she has it has. For the plural forms: we have you have they have. It's also good to know that in the English language there are regular and irregular verbs. And it is advisable that you study the most commonly used irregular verbs. Now let's get started. Take a look at these sentences: I have painted the door yellow. They have paid for dinner themselves. Both these sentences are in the present perfect tense. How to form a present perfect tense. Let's have a look at the regular verbs. For the regular verbs we use the auxiliary verb 'to have' and the past participle. You can make the past participle by adding 'ed' to the infinitive form of the verb. Now let's have a look at the singular forms. I have worked there. You have listened carefully. He has cleared the table. She has placed it on the floor. It has snowed. For the plural forms: We have walked to school. You have watched the tennis match. They have marked the tests. Now we need to pay extra attention to verbs that end in an 'e'. Such as live, close and wipe. For these verbs we use the auxiliary verb to have and the past participle. But the past participle is made by simply adding a '-d' to the verb. Look at the examples: I have lived here for quite some time now. He has closed the window. They have wiped the floor. We also need to pay attention to verbs that end in a 'y', especially those preceded by consonant such as spy and study because we change the '-y' into an 'i'. For example: He has spied on his neighbours. We have studied hard. Now let's have a look at the irregular verbs. For the irregular verbs we also use the auxiliary verb to have and the past participle. But for the irregular verbs the past participle has a unique present perfect form. Take a look at the examples: I have built that shed with my own two hands. (The infinitive form of the verb is to build.) She has bought some flowers at the market.(The infinitive form of the verb is 'to buy'.) We have run the marathon. (The infinitive form of the verb is to run.) Now let's have a look at the present perfect tense in questions. First for the regular verbs. Again we use the auxiliary verb 'to have' and the past participle. Has she talked to him yet? Have you kicked the ball? Have they ever worked on a farm? For the irregular verbs we also use the auxiliary verb 'to have' and the past participle, but now the unique present perfect tense form. For example Has she quit her job yet? Have you ever driven a car? Have they ever paid for dinner? Let's have a look at the present perfect tense in negations. For the regular verbs the auxiliary verb 'to have' and we add 'not', contracting it into haven't or hasn't and the past participle. I haven't listened to the news. It hasn't rained since Friday They haven't closed the window. For the irregular verbs we also use the verb 'to have', and not contracting it into haven't and hasn't and the past participle. For example: She hasn't quit her job. (The infinitive form is 'to quit'.) You haven't ever driven a car. (The infinitive form is 'to drive'.) They haven't paid for dinner. (The infinitive form of the verb is 'to pay'.) Let's have a look at the present perfect tense in use. We use the present perfect tense for things that happened in the past, but it is not important when they happened. I have been to Scotland. It's not important when I've been there, it's important that I've been to Scotland. They've decided to buy a car. It's not important when they decided it, the decision alone is important. We also use the present perfect tense for things that started in the past, that have continued in the present. For example: Bob and Jack have known each other for ages. (For example they met in the 1970s, and they are still friends.) They have lived there since 2011. (So they moved there in 2011 and they've continued to live there.) We also use the present perfect tense, when the following words are in a sentence: for, yet, never, ever, just, already, since. Here are some examples: I have lived here for three years.
