Bremen Travel Video - Those of you who love peat bogs, walking on tidal flats, going to sea or blustery bike rides will especially enjoy visiting Bremen and the East Frisian coast. It's a place ideally suited to taking the pace off travel and to immersing yourself in flat, verdant countryside. If not for its focal point Bremen, it wouldn't even have a city of notable size to write home about.
But Bremen, an outward-looking, very friendly cultural and industrial capital of its own city state, is the clear urban highlight and also includes the port of Bremerhaven and the artists' colony of Worpswede. While rail connections in the eastern parts are excellent, you will find buses and boats necessary for exploring outlying regions of East Frisia and of course the islands.

Die auf ein Volksmärchen zurückgehende Statue der Bremer Stadtmusikanten steht seit 1953 vor dem Bremer Rathaus. Eine Legende besagt, dass ein Wunsch in Erfüllung geht, wenn man die Vorderbeine des Esels berührt.

Das Labyrinth aus mittelalterlichen Gässchen verdankt seinen Namen der Verbindung zum Schiffshandwerk, denn hier wurden Seile, Taue und Anker hergestellt. Heutzutage stehen viele Gebäude unter Denkmalschutz. Sie beherbergen u. a. Kunsthandwerkerbetriebe, Cafés und Museen.

Das Fünf-Sterne-Hotel beeindruckt mit Kuppeldach, ausladenden Gebäudeflügeln und den Wasserspielen des Hollersees. Die Lage im Bürgerpark macht es zu einem Kleinod der Extraklasse.

Inmitten der Großstadt bieten der Bürgerpark sowie der dazugehörige Stadtwald auf 200 Hektar Erholung und Freizeitangebote für jedermann. Ein Großteil der aus dem 19. Jahrhundert stammenden Gartenanlage ist noch erhalten und lädt zur Entdeckung zahlreicher Denkmäler, Statuen und Gebäude ein.

Rolandsstatuen versinnbildlichen das einer Stadt verliehene Stadt- und Marktrecht. Der Bremer Roland ist eine der ältesten und schönsten dieser Statuen und wurde 2004 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe erklärt.

Die historische Promenade am Weserufer verdankt ihren Namen der früheren Uferbefestigung durch in den Boden geschlagene Holzpfähle. Wo früher Schiffe ankerten, laden jetzt Cafés und Restaurants zum Verweilen ein.

Am 18. August 1944, startete die Royal Airforce einen ihrer 174 Luftangriffe auf Bremen, der 23 Minuten dauern sollte. Danach lag der Westen Bremens fast komplett in Trümmern, mehr als 1000 Stadtbewohner starben bei dem Angriff. Die Flugzeugbesatzung war nach ca. 5 Stunden wieder zurück im Heimatflughafen, wobei durchschnittlich eines von 20 Flugzeugen nicht wiederkam. Der psychische Druck bei den Besatzungen war groß, es kam nicht selten vor, dass ein Pilot mit einer Maschine voller Toten landete. Ein Commander der Pathfinder Force, die den nachfolgenden Bombern das Ziel wiesen schrieb in sein Tagebuch: „Die Maschinengewehröffnungen, die Glaskuppeln und die weit geöffneten Bombentore machten uns zur Zielscheibe für die tödlichen Geschosse.“
In den letzten Tagen vor der Einnahme der Stadt flog die RAF fast ununterbrochen Bombenangriffe. Der Senat Bremens bemühte sich zwar um eine kampflose Übergabe der Stadt, aber der Kommandant Becker versuchte die Verteidigung der Stadt aufrechtzuerhalten. Am 20. April war sie schließlich von britischen und schottischen Infanteriedivisionen umstellt. Den Bewohnern wurde ein Ultimatum von 24 Stunden gegeben, um sich zu ergeben. Am 21. April warnte das britische Militär Becker noch einmal am Telefon vergeblich vor den kommenden Angriffen. Nach weiteren 6 Tagen Luftangriffen und heftigem Artilleriefeuer durch britische Truppen, kapitulierte die Besatzung unter Becker schließlich am 27. April. Einen Monat später, am 20. Mai 1945, übernehmen die Amerikaner offiziell die Regierungsgewalt.

The City Municipality of Bremen (German: Stadtgemeinde Bremen, IPA: [ˈbʁeːmən]) is a Hanseatic city in northwestern Germany.
A commercial and industrial city with a major port on the River Weser, Bremen is part of the Bremen/Oldenburg Metropolitan Region, with 2.4 million people. Bremen is the second most populous city in Northern Germany and tenth in Germany.
Bremen is a major cultural and economic hub in the northern regions of Germany. Bremen is home to dozens of historical galleries and museums, ranging from historical sculptures to major art museums, such as the Übersee-Museum Bremen. Bremen has a reputation as a working class city. Along with this, Bremen is home to a large number of multinational companies and manufacturing centers. Companies headquartered in Bremen include the Hachez chocolate company and Vector Foiltec.
Bremen is some 60 km (37 mi) south from the Weser mouth on the North Sea. With Bremerhaven right on the mouth the two comprise the state of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen (official German name: Freie Hansestadt Bremen).

Bremen '45 - Erbitterter Widerstand
Am 18. August 1944, startete die Royal Airforce einen ihrer 174 Luftangriffe auf Bremen, der 23 Minuten dauern sollte. Danach lag der Westen Bremens fast komplett in Trümmern, mehr als 1000 Stadtbewohner starben bei dem Angriff. Die Flugzeugbesatzung war nach ca. 5 Stunden wieder zurück im Heimatflughafen, wobei durchschnittlich eines von 20 Flugzeugen nicht wiederkam. Der psychische Druck bei den Besatzungen war groß, es kam nicht selten vor, dass ein Pilot mit einer Maschine voller Toten landete. Das Labyrinth aus mittelalterlichen Gässchen verdankt seinen Namen der Verbindung zum Schiffshandwerk, denn hier wurden Seile, Taue und Anker hergestellt. Heutzutage stehen viele Gebäude unter Denkmalschutz. Sie beherbergen u. a. Kunsthandwerkerbetriebe, Cafés und Museen.

Das Fünf-Sterne-Hotel beeindruckt mit Kuppeldach, ausladenden Gebäudeflügeln und den Wasserspielen des Hollersees. Die Lage im Bürgerpark macht es zu einem Kleinod der Extraklasse.

Inmitten der Großstadt bieten der Bürgerpark sowie der dazugehörige Stadtwald auf 200 Hektar Erholung und Freizeitangebote für jedermann. Ein Großteil der aus dem 19. Jahrhundert stammenden Gartenanlage ist noch erhalten und lädt zur Entdeckung zahlreicher Denkmäler, Statuen und Gebäude ein.

Der mehr als 1.200 Jahre alte, aus mehreren Schiffen bestehende imposante Bremer Dom vereint Stilelemente der Romanik und Gotik in sich und ist seit 1973 denkmalgeschützt. Einer der beiden das Stadtbild prägenden 92 Meter hohen Türme ist für Besucher zugänglich.

Rolandsstatuen versinnbildlichen das einer Stadt verliehene Stadt- und Marktrecht. Der Bremer Roland ist eine der ältesten und schönsten dieser Statuen und wurde 2004 zum UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe erklärt.

Die historische Promenade am Weserufer verdankt ihren Namen der früheren Uferbefestigung durch in den Boden geschlagene Holzpfähle. Wo früher Schiffe ankerten, laden jetzt Cafés und Restaurants zum Verweilen ein.

Am 18. August 1944, startete die Royal Airforce einen ihrer 174 Luftangriffe auf Bremen, der 23 Minuten dauern sollte. Danach lag der Westen Bremens fast komplett in Trümmern, mehr als 1000 Stadtbewohner starben bei dem Angriff. Die Flugzeugbesatzung war nach ca. 5 Stunden wieder zurück im Heimatflughafen, wobei durchschnittlich eines von 20 Flugzeugen nicht wiederkam. Der psychische Druck bei den Besatzungen war groß, es kam nicht selten vor, dass ein Pilot mit einer Maschine voller Toten landete. Ein Commander der Pathfinder Force, die den nachfolgenden Bombern das Ziel wiesen schrieb in sein Tagebuch: „Die Maschinengewehröffnungen, die Glaskuppeln und die weit geöffneten Bombentore machten uns zur Zielscheibe für die tödlichen Geschosse.“
In den letzten Tagen vor der Einnahme der Stadt flog die RAF fast ununterbrochen Bombenangriffe. Der Senat Bremens bemühte sich zwar um eine kampflose Übergabe der Stadt, aber der Kommandant Becker versuchte die Verteidigung der Stadt aufrechtzuerhalten. Am 20. April war sie schließlich von britischen und schottischen Infanteriedivisionen umstellt. Den Bewohnern wurde ein Ultimatum von 24 Stunden gegeben, um sich zu ergeben. Am 21. April warnte das britische Militär Becker noch einmal am Telefon vergeblich vor den kommenden Angriffen. Nach weiteren 6 Tagen Luftangriffen und heftigem Artilleriefeuer durch britische Truppen, kapitulierte die Besatzung unter Becker schließlich am 27. April. Einen Monat später, am 20. Mai 1945, übernehmen die Amerikaner offiziell die Regierungsgewalt.

Cologne has its carnival, Munich hosts the Oktoberfest, but in Bremen, the celebrations go on all year round! Not a month goes by without some exciting event taking place in the city: the Freimarkt (the oldest funfair in Germany), the music and maritime festivals, Europe's biggest six-day cycle race, musicals and plays, prestigious art exhibitions and last but not least the traditional Christmas market and the accompanying stalls along the Schlachte Embankment.

Places to see in ( Bremen - Germany )
The second most populous town in North Germany, Bremen brings the high-tech, science and space industries together beneath a truly metropolitan backdrop. In a city where innovation, beauty and sophistication meet, it's impossible not to feel the life force. In this 1,200-year-old Hanseatic city, visit the Schlachte Promenade on the River Weser, the full-sized Columbus Space Module of the International Space Station and the Universum Science Center. Oh, and "Hanseatic" refers to an alliance of trading cities in the 13th-17th centuries. But you probably knew that.
Bremen was once a member of the medieval Hanseatic League and is still one of the most important cities in northern Germany. Together with the city of Bremerhaven on the North Sea it forms Germany's smallest state. Bremen has more than 1200 years of history, and was, for most of its existence, an independent city-state.
Rathaus (Town Hall) this is one of the finest in Europe and as such has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Building work started in 1410 and it is seen as an important display of the wealth and freedom of the city. Tours of the interior are conducted by the Tourist information office at 11AM, noon, 3PM and 4PM
Dom St Petri (Cathedral of St Peter) is over 1200 years old, and its huge towered façade dominates the main square. the interior is impressive with some fine painted details on the ceilings. There is a treasury displaying the collection of the cathedral. Entrance is free, for €1 you can climb the Southern Tower offering nice views over the whole city
Roland this statue on the main square is of the Knight Roland who was a protector of trade. It appears in many European cities especially those involved in the Hanseatic league. Bremen's is considered one of the finest and is included with Town Hall on the World Heritage List.
Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten (Town Musicians of Bremen) perhaps the most well known figures associated with Bremen are the characters from the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale, their image adorns many of the souvenirs in the city. Next to the Town Hall is a much photographed statue of them.
Böttcherstrasse is the incredible Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) street that runs from the main square towards the river. There are many fine façades and courtyards all with large amounts of design detail. There is an impressive Glockenspiel that chimes at regular intervals. There are lots of shops and several Museums, including the impressive Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum. Haus Atlantis (now the Hilton) has an impressive spiral staircase just inside, at the top of which is the staggering Himmelssaal (unfortunately it is not normally open to the public).
Schnoor this area of twisting lanes is a lovely place to wander aimlessly looking at in the many shops and also at the world smallest hotel (see Sleep)
Weserburg (Neues Museum Weserburg) Teerhof 20 - is a modern art museum who exhibits presentations of works from private collections and works illustrating modern art from the sixties to the present.
Am Wall is a lovely park next to the former defensive moat which offers a nice place to sit and relax.

Bremen Travel Video - Those of you who love peat bogs, walking on tidal flats, going to sea or blustery bike rides will especially enjoy visiting Bremen and the East Frisian coast. It's a place ideally suited to taking the pace off travel and to immersing yourself in flat, verdant countryside. If not for its focal point Bremen, it wouldn't even have a city of notable size to write home about. But Bremen, an outward-looking, very friendly cultural and industrial capital of its own city state, is the clear urban highlight and also includes the port of Bremerhaven and the artists' colony of Worpswede. Bremen '45 - Erbitterter Widerstand
Am 18. August 1944, startete die Royal Airforce einen ihrer 174 Luftangriffe auf Bremen, der 23 Minuten dauern sollte. Danach lag der Westen Bremens fast komplett in Trümmern, mehr als 1000 Stadtbewohner starben bei dem Angriff. Die Flugzeugbesatzung war nach ca. 5 Stunden wieder zurück im Heimatflughafen, wobei durchschnittlich eines von 20 Flugzeugen nicht wiederkam. Der psychische Druck bei den Besatzungen war groß, es kam nicht selten vor, dass ein Pilot mit einer Maschine voller Toten landete. Am 18. August 1944, startete die Royal Airforce einen ihrer 174 Luftangriffe auf Bremen, der 23 Minuten dauern sollte. Danach lag der Westen Bremens fast komplett in Trümmern, mehr als 1000 Stadtbewohner starben bei dem Angriff. Die Flugzeugbesatzung war nach ca. 5 Stunden wieder zurück im Heimatflughafen, wobei durchschnittlich eines von 20 Flugzeugen nicht wiederkam. Der psychische Druck bei den Besatzungen war groß, es kam nicht selten vor, dass ein Pilot mit einer Maschine voller Toten landete. Ein Commander der Pathfinder Force, die den nachfolgenden Bombern das Ziel wiesen schrieb in sein Tagebuch: „Die Maschinengewehröffnungen, die Glaskuppeln und die weit geöffneten Bombentore machten uns zur Zielscheibe für die tödlichen Geschosse.“
In den letzten Tagen vor der Einnahme der Stadt flog die RAF fast ununterbrochen Bombenangriffe. Der Senat Bremens bemühte sich zwar um eine kampflose Übergabe der Stadt, aber der Kommandant Becker versuchte die Verteidigung der Stadt aufrechtzuerhalten. Am 20. April war sie schließlich von britischen und schottischen Infanteriedivisionen umstellt. Den Bewohnern wurde ein Ultimatum von 24 Stunden gegeben, um sich zu ergeben. Am 21. April warnte das britische Militär Becker noch einmal am Telefon vergeblich vor den kommenden Angriffen. Nach weiteren 6 Tagen Luftangriffen und heftigem Artilleriefeuer durch britische Truppen, kapitulierte die Besatzung unter Becker schließlich am 27. April. Einen Monat später, am 20. Mai 1945, übernehmen die Amerikaner offiziell die Regierungsgewalt.
