This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Chris Grundner is the president and CEO of the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement. Since his arrival in February 2012, he has enabled the organization to nearly double its membership and significantly expand its reach. Grundner, originally from Buffalo, NY, received his Bachelors in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Fredonia. He earned his MBA from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. In 1999, Grundner moved to Wilmington to join the co-brand credit card division of First USA Bank as the Director of Business Development. Due to his significant achievements, Grundner became one of the organization’s youngest Senior Vice Presidents in early 2002. However, later that same year, his wife, Kelly, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at the age of 29. Grundner left his job at JPMorgan Chase in 2004 after her passing and started The Kelly Heinz-Grundner Brain Tumor Foundation in 2005 with the goal of bringing national attention to the disease. Through the foundation, Grundner has launched two brain tumor awareness initiatives – GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME® and Tulips Against Tumors™ – both of which became national programs when the organization merged with the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS) in March 2010.

Political scientist and global development champion Kirk Bowman offers an alternative approach to international development projects and philanthropy.
Dr. Kirk Bowman, a champion of global development projects, is a professor and associate chair at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he specializes in Latin American politics and development. He is also the co-founder and director of the international NGO Rise Up & Care (www.riseup.care).
Bowman's academic work has received support from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Ford Foundation, among others. He received the University System of Georgia Excellence of Teaching in 2007, and was named Georgia’s Carnegie-Case Professor of the Year in 2008.
He earned his Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and has authored numerous books on Latin American politics.

As both an early stage technology venture capital investor and a social justice activist, John Levy outlines different frameworks for social change, impact and scalability. He describes his double bottom line experience of combining venture investment with social change in the context of an investment in BioLite, an off-grid energy company that has the potential to improve the lives of the 3 billion people who rely on cooking with traditional means by reducing black carbon output while using less fuel and co-generating electricity.
John Levy graduated magna cum laude from
Amherst College with a degree in American
Studies, and received his M.B.A. from the Harvard Business School. While at Amherst, Levy began a film series called Sparkling Celluloid, and has since continued to stay true to this spirit of entrepreneurship. For over 30 years, he has been working at the intersection of technology and finance. Mr. Levy was a founding partner of L Capital Partners’ where he led investments and served on the boards of WiSpry, OnPATH Technologies, HiGTek, Simparel, Evogen, and Peek. From 2001-2005, Mr. Levy was a partner in the Shalom Equity Fund, a seed stage tech fund based in the US and Israel. Since 1989, Mr. Levy has served on the board of Bend the Arc and was chairman of the organization from 2000-2006 overseeing the merger of two nonprofit organizations. Since 2010, he has served as the chairman of BioLite, a distributed energy company. In 2011 he was named the Chairman of Hypres, a digital RF and quantum computing company, and in 2012 became the founding Chairman of PlusN, a carrier aggregation software company.

Phrase
In everyday speech, a phrase may be any group of words, often carrying a special idiomatic meaning; in this sense it is roughly synonymous with expression. In linguistic analysis, a phrase is a group of words (or possibly a single word) that functions as a constituent in the syntax of a sentence—a single unit within a grammatical hierarchy. A phrase appears within a clause, although it is also possible for a phrase to be a clause or to contain a clause within it.
Common and technical use
There is a difference between the common use of the term phrase and its technical use in linguistics. In common usage, a phrase is usually a group of words with some special idiomatic meaning or other significance, such as "all rights reserved", "economical with the truth", "kick the bucket", and the like. It may be a euphemism, a saying or proverb, a fixed expression, a figure of speech, etc.
In grammatical analysis, particularly in theories of syntax, a phrase is any group of words, or sometimes a single word, which plays a particular role within the grammatical structure of a sentence. It does not have to have any special meaning or significance, or even exist anywhere outside of the sentence being analyzed, but it must function there as a complete grammatical unit. For example, in the sentence Yesterday I saw an orange bird with a white neck, the words an orange bird with a white neck form what is called a noun phrase, or a determiner phrase in some theories, which functions as the object of the sentence.

Nonprofit organization
A nonprofit organization (NPO, also known as a non-business entity) is an organization whose purposes are other than making a profit. A nonprofit organization is often dedicated to furthering a particular social cause or advocating for a particular point of view. In economic terms, a nonprofit organization uses its surplus revenues to further achieve its purpose or mission, rather than distributing its surplus income to the organization's shareholders (or equivalents) as profit or dividends. This is known as the distribution constraint. The decision to adopt a nonprofit legal structure is one that will often have taxation implications, particularly where the nonprofit seeks income tax exemption, charitable status and so on.
The terms nonprofit and not-for-profit are not consistently differentiated across jurisdictions. In layman's terms they are usually equivalent in concept, although in various jurisdictions there are accounting and legal differences.

Since his arrival in February 2012, he has enabled the organization to nearly double its membership and significantly expand its reach. Grundner, originally from Buffalo, NY, received his Bachelors in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Fredonia. He earned his MBA from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. In 1999, Grundner moved to Wilmington to join the co-brand credit card division of First USA Bank as the Director of Business Development. Due to his significant achievements, Grundner became one of the organization’s youngest Senior Vice Presidents in early 2002. However, later that same year, his wife, Kelly, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at the age of 29. Grundner left his job at JPMorgan Chase in 2004 after her passing and started The Kelly Heinz-Grundner Brain Tumor Foundation in 2005 with the goal of bringing national attention to the disease. Through the foundation, Grundner has launched two brain tumor awareness initiatives – GET YOUR HEAD IN THE GAME® and Tulips Against Tumors™ – both of which became national programs when the organization merged with the National Brain Tumor Society (NBTS) in March 2010.

For over 30 years, he has been working at the intersection of technology and finance. Mr. Levy was a founding partner of L Capital Partners’ where he led investments and served on the boards of WiSpry, OnPATH Technologies, HiGTek, Simparel, Evogen, and Peek. From 2001-2005, Mr. Levy was a partner in the Shalom Equity Fund, a seed stage tech fund based in the US and Israel. Since 1989, Mr. Levy has served on the board of Bend the Arc and was chairman of the organization from 2000-2006 overseeing the merger of two nonprofit organizations. Since 2010, he has served as the chairman of BioLite, a distributed energy company. In 2011 he was named the Chairman of Hypres, a digital RF and quantum computing company, and in 2012 became the founding Chairman of PlusN, a carrier aggregation software company.
