This year’s Christmas ad from Sainsbury’s – Christmas is for sharing. Made in partnership with The Royal British Legion, it commemorates the extraordinary events of Christmas Day, 1914, when the guns fell silent and two armies met in no-man’s land, sharing gifts – and even playing football together.
The chocolate bar featured in the ad is on sale now at Sainsbury’s. All profits (50p per bar) will go to The Royal British Legion and will benefit our armed forces and their families, past and present.

Presenting the new Sainsbury’s Christmas Advert – a joyous Christmas musical created in stop frame animation featuring vocals by James Corden. It tells the story of Dave, a hard-working and devoted Dad, who realises that the greatest gift he can give people this Christmas is his time.
As the first snow falls, we find our hero Dave caught up in the Christmas whirlwind – all he wants to do is to get home to spend time with his family, but all sorts of Christmas duties and calamities are getting in his way. That is until he sees a gingerbread man on his daughter’s bedside table that they’ve made to look like him. That gives him a genius brainwave…
This year, we’ve worked in partnership with Great Ormond Street Hospital to help families be together. Over 50% of children treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital are from outside of London, so we’re raising money to fund accommodation that means patients’ families can stay close by in difficult times.

Game of Truce commemorates WW1 football match

On Wednesday night the spirit of the First World War Christmas truce lived on as the British and German armies played a 100th anniversary football match to mark the Christmas Truce of 1914. The match saw the British Army edging out their German counterparts, the Bundeswehr, by a single goal. All proceeds from the match will be donated to the Legion and the German Military's equivalent charity.
The match was jointly organised by the Football Association as part of its Football Remembers campaign, and Army HQ with sponsorship support from Team Army and Aldershot Town.
It honoured the spirit of the 1914 Christmas Truce using the international language of football as a fitting commemoration to the men on both sides who spent Christmas 1914 in the trenches but came together along the Western Front to joke, share whisky and schnapps and kick a ball about in no-man's land. It has come to represent a fleeting moment of humanity in a four-year conflict that killed more than 16 million troops and civilians.
Game of Truce teams
The game began with a rendition of 'Silent Night' as well as the national anthems of both countries and a minute's silence. Over 2,500 people turned out, including football legend Sir Bobby Charlton, FA Chairman Greg Dyke and Head of Army, General Sir Nicholas Carter.
Head of the Army General Sir Nick Carter was also at the game, where both sides were led out by flag bearers and mascots wearing military uniforms from 1914. "I think it shows the enduring ability of sport, and soccer in particular, to bring together factions and tribes and different people who are competing against each other, in a way that has comradeship right at the heart of the game."
British Army Team Captain Keith Emmerson said: "We are always proud to put on the Army shirt, no matter how many games you play, but especially tonight. We are all here for the rest of the Armed Forces, not just us as an army football team, but we're representing all of the Armed Forces."

The match wasn't about the final score but for the record, the British Army won 1-0.
The Legion is a firm supporter of sport within the military and is delighted to be a beneficiary charity from the Christmas Truce football match. The match is assisting the Legion to engage with a new generation of supporters and carry the Legion's message of comradeship to a broader community. Through commemorative events such as the Christmas Truce match, we are passing on the torch of Remembrance onto a younger generation ensuring there will always be a living legacy to those who sacrificed their today for our tomorrows.

Christmas

The Royal British Legion
The Royal British Legion (RBL), sometimes referred to as the The British Legion or The Legion, is a British charity providing financial, social and emotional support to members and veterans of the British Armed Forces, their families and dependants.
Membership
Service in the military is no longer a requirement of Legion membership. The Legion has an official membership magazine, Legion, which is free to all Legion members as part of their annual subscription.
History
The British Legion was founded in 1921 as a voice for the ex-service community as a merger of four organisations: the Comrades of the Great War, the National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers, the National Federation of Discharged and Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers and the Officers' Association. It was granted a Royal Charter on 29 May 1971 to mark its fiftieth anniversary which gives the Legion the privilege of the prefix 'Royal'.
Earl Haig, British commander at the Battle of the Somme and Passchendaele was one of the founders of the Legion and the President until his death.

The Royal
The Royal is a British medical drama series produced by ITV that ran from 2003 to 2011. The show comprised one-hour episodes which were normally first aired on ITV in the Sunday early evening slot.
The title of the series refers to the fictional "St Aidan's Royal Free Hospital", located in Elsinby, a fictional rural seaside town, portrayed as being close to Aidensfield, the fictional setting of the UK TV series Heartbeat. The series was shot in Whitby and Scarborough, in the North Riding of Yorkshire. The Royal is an NHS hospital serving the local town, countryside and visitors. The show was set in the 1960s. It began as a spin-off from another popular ITV show set in North Yorkshire, Heartbeat.
Stars of the show included Ian Carmichael, Wendy Craig, Robert Daws, and Amy Robbins. The last episode of the show aired at 7.00 pm on Sunday, 31 July 2011 on ITV.
Overview
The Royal was introduced in the 14th episode of the 12th series of Heartbeat entitled 'Out Of The Blue' and The Royal benefited from this connection to the extremely popular parent series; several Heartbeat characters appeared in the first couple of series of The Royal, most notably Bill Maynard as a bed-ridden Claude Greengrass, but as the series progressed it generally dropped its character crossovers with Heartbeat to become its own entity.

The Legion is a firm supporter of sport within the military and is delighted to be a beneficiary charity from the Christmas Truce football match. The match is assisting the Legion to engage with a new generation of supporters and carry the Legion's message of comradeship to a broader community. Game of Truce commemorates WW1 football match

On Wednesday night the spirit of the First World War Christmas truce lived on as the British and German armies played a 100th anniversary football match to mark the Christmas Truce of 1914. The match saw the British Army edging out their German counterparts, the Bundeswehr, by a single goal. All proceeds from the match will be donated to the Legion and the German Military's equivalent charity.
The match was jointly organised by the Football Association as part of its Football Remembers campaign, and Army HQ with sponsorship support from Team Army and Aldershot Town.
It honoured the spirit of the 1914 Christmas Truce using the international language of football as a fitting commemoration to the men on both sides who spent Christmas 1914 in the trenches but came together along the Western Front to joke, share whisky and schnapps and kick a ball about in no-man's land. It has come to represent a fleeting moment of humanity in a four-year conflict that killed more than 16 million troops and civilians.
Game of Truce teams
The game began with a rendition of 'Silent Night' as well as the national anthems of both countries and a minute's silence. Over 2,500 people turned out, including football legend Sir Bobby Charlton, FA Chairman Greg Dyke and Head of Army, General Sir Nicholas Carter.
Head of the Army General Sir Nick Carter was also at the game, where both sides were led out by flag bearers and mascots wearing military uniforms from 1914. This year’s Christmas ad from Sainsbury’s – Christmas is for sharing. Made in partnership with The Royal British Legion, it commemorates the extraordinary events of Christmas Day, 1914, when the guns fell silent and two armies met in no-man’s land, sharing gifts – and even playing football together.
The chocolate bar featured in the ad is on sale now at Sainsbury’s. All profits will go to The Royal British Legion and will benefit the armed forces and their families, past and present.

Game of Truce commemorates WW1 football match

On Wednesday night the spirit of the First World War Christmas truce lived on as the British and German armies played a 100th anniversary football match to mark the Christmas Truce of 1914. The match saw the British Army edging out their German counterparts, the Bundeswehr, by a single goal. All proceeds from the match will be donated to the Legion and the German Military's equivalent charity.
The match was jointly organised by the Football Association as part of its Football Remembers campaign, and Army HQ with sponsorship support from Team Army and Aldershot Town.
It honoured the spirit of the 1914 Christmas Truce using the international language of football as a fitting commemoration to the men on both sides who spent Christmas 1914 in the trenches but came together along the Western Front to joke, share whisky and schnapps and kick a ball about in no-man's land. It has come to represent a fleeting moment of humanity in a four-year conflict that killed more than 16 million troops and civilians.
Game of Truce teams
The game began with a rendition of 'Silent Night' as well as the national anthems of both countries and a minute's silence. Over 2,500 people turned out, including football legend Sir Bobby Charlton, FA Chairman Greg Dyke and Head of Army, General Sir Nicholas Carter.
Head of the Army General Sir Nick Carter was also at the game, where both sides were led out by flag bearers and mascots wearing military uniforms from 1914.
