Sir Walter Scott, 1st Baronet, FRSE (15 August 1771 – 21 September 1832) was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright and poet with many contemporary readers in Europe, Australia, and North America.
Scott's novels and poetry are still read, and many of his works remain classics of both English-language literature and of Scottish literature. Famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, Old Mortality, The Lady of the Lake, Waverley, The Heart of Midlothian and The Bride of Lammermoor.
Although primarily remembered for his extensive literary works and his political engagement, Scott was an advocate, judge and legal administrator by profession, and throughout his career combined his writing and editing work with his daily occupation as Clerk of Session and Sheriff-Depute of Selkirkshire.
A prominent member of the Tory establishment in Edinburgh, Scott was an active member of the Highland Society and served a long term as President of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (1820–32).
The shooting of Walter Scott occurred on April 4, 2015, in North Charleston, South Carolina, following a daytime traffic stop for a non-functioning brake light. Scott, a black man, was fatally shot by Michael Slager, a white North Charleston police officer. Slager was charged with murder after a video surfaced contradicting his police report. The video showed him shooting the unarmed Scott from behind while Scott was fleeing.
The case was independently investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of South Carolina, and the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division are conducting their own investigations.
On June 8, a grand jury indicted Slager on a charge of murder. He was released on bond in January 2016 and a trial is scheduled to begin in October 2016.
Walter Lamar Scott (February 9, 1965 – April 4, 2015), a 50-year-old black man, was a forklift operator, studying massage therapy. Scott previously served two years in the U.S. Coast Guard before being given a general discharge in 1986 for a drug-related incident.
North Charleston is the third-largest city in the U.S. state of South Carolina, with incorporated areas in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties. As defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, for use by the U.S. Census Bureau and other U.S. Government agencies for statistical purposes only, North Charleston is included within the Charleston–North Charleston–Summerville metropolitan area and the Charleston-North Charleston urban area. It's a decision so rare, it's historic. The Department of Justice has indicted the former police officer who killed Walter Scott on charges of violating civil rights. "He will be charged with murder," North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey said. Michael Slager shot and killed Scott in April 2015. Shortly after, Slager was charged with murder by a South Carolina grand jury. He has since posted bail and has been on house arrest since January. Slager now faces life in prison in both state and federal cases, plus a possible $250,000 fine. Both of Slager's indictments are rare occurrences for police-involved shootings, but Slager's situation is especially rare. The indictment of any officer in a police-involved shooting is uncommon.
