Super Bowl XXXVII was an American football game between the American Football Conference (AFC) champion Oakland Raiders and the National Football Conference (NFC) champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers to decide the National Football League (NFL) champion for the 2002 season. The Buccaneers defeated the Raiders by the score of 48–21, tied with Super Bowl XXXV for the seventh largest Super Bowl margin of victory, and winning their first ever Super Bowl. The game, played on January 26, 2003 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California, was the sixth Super Bowl to be held a week after the conference championship games (XVII, XXV, XXVIII, XXXIV, and XXXVI). It was also the last Super Bowl to have been played in the month of January. Super Bowl XXXVI was the first to be played in February, due to the NFL postponing games for a week after the September 11 attacks. Starting with Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004, the Super Bowl has been permanently played in February. This was the last Super Bowl until Super Bowl 50 to take place in California.
The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL), the highest level of professional football in the United States. The game culminates a season that begins in the late summer of the previous calendar year. Normally, Roman numerals are used to identify each game, rather than the year in which it is held. For example, Super Bowl I was played on January 15, 1967, following the 1966 regular season. The single exception to this rule is Super Bowl 50, which was played on February 7, 2016, following the 2015 regular season.
The game was created as part of a merger agreement between the NFL and its then-rival league, the American Football League (AFL). It was agreed that the two leagues' champion teams would play in the AFL–NFL World Championship Game until the merger was to officially begin in 1970. After the merger, each league was redesignated as a "conference", and the game has since been played between the conference champions to determine the NFL's league champion. Currently, the National Football Conference (NFC) leads the league with 26 wins to 23 wins for the American Football Conference (AFC). The Pittsburgh Steelers have the most Super Bowl victories with six.
Tampa Bay is a large natural harbor and estuary connected to the Gulf of Mexico on the west central coast of Florida, comprising Hillsboro Bay, McKay Bay, Old Tampa Bay, Middle Tampa Bay, and Lower Tampa Bay. The surrounding area is home to about 4 million residents, making it a heavily used commercial and recreational waterway but putting much stress on the bay's ecosystem, which once teemed with enough wildlife to easily support an extensive indigenous culture. Much greater care has been taken in recent decades to mitigate the effects of human habitation on Tampa Bay, and water quality has slowly improved over time.
The term "Tampa Bay" is sometimes used as shorthand to refer to all or parts of the Tampa Bay area, which comprises many towns and cities in several counties surrounding the large body of water. Local marketing and branding efforts (including several professional sports teams, tourist boards, and chambers of commerce) commonly use the moniker "Tampa Bay", furthering the misconception that it is the name of a particular municipality when this is not the case.

Jon David Gruden (born August 17, 1963) is an American former college football player and professional coach. He was the head coach of the Oakland Raiders and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, winning Super Bowl XXXVII in his first year with the Buccaneers (defeating the Raiders, his former team that traded him to Tampa Bay the previous off-season). At the time, Gruden was the youngest head coach ever to win a Super Bowl at age 39 years, 5 months and 9 days
Gruden was born on August 17, 1963, in Sandusky, Ohio. His father, Jim, later served as a professional football regional scout, running backs coach and director of player personnel for the Tampa Bay Bucs. His brother, Jay, played and coached in the Arena Football League, and is now the head coach of the Washington Redskins. His other brother, James, became a radiologist at the Mayo Clinic.
While growing up in Sandusky, Gruden was a Cleveland Browns fan. He was raised in the Roman Catholic faith. When he was 15, Gruden attended Clay High School in South Bend, Indiana, while his father, Jim, served as an assistant to Dan Devine at the University of Notre Dame. After graduating from high school in 1981, Gruden attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. After one year, he transferred to the University of Dayton and lived at 3 Evanston (The Gateway), where he was a three-year letterman and backup quarterback for the Flyers under coach Mike Kelly. Gruden never saw much playing time, but the Flyers posted a 24–7 record during his three seasons at UD. Gruden graduated with a degree in communications in 1985.

A highlight film of the 2002-2003 National Football League season, leading up to the conference championship games. Though the Super Bowl itself is not shown, as this was produced the week prior to the big game, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won the championship that year over the Oakland Raiders. This came off of a Super Bowl XXXI-XL DVD collection I own. Judging by the score graphics, it most likely aired on ABC hours before the Super Bowl was played. Requested by Anthony Gironda.
