Alessandro Ignazio Marcello (Italian: [marˈtʃɛllo]; 1 February 1673 in Venice – 19 June 1747 in Venice) was an Italian nobleman and musician.
A contemporary of Tomaso Albinoni, Marcello was the son of a senator in Venice. As such, he enjoyed a comfortable life that gave him the scope to pursue his interest in music. He held concerts in his hometown and also composed and published several sets of concertos, including six concertos under the title of La Cetra (The Lyre), as well as cantatas, arias, canzonets, and violin sonatas. Marcello, being a slightly older contemporary of Antonio Vivaldi, often composed under the pseudonym Eterio Stinfalico, his name as a member of the celebrated Arcadian Academy (Pontificia Accademia degli Arcadi). He died in Padua in 1747.
Alessandro's brother was Benedetto Marcello, also a composer, who illegally married his singing student Rosanna Scalfi in 1728. After his death she was unable to inherit his estate, and in 1742 she filed suit against Alessandro Marcello, seeking financial support.
The Concerto for Oboe and Strings in D minor, attributed to Alessandro Marcello, is one of the most performed oboe concertos in the repertory. It was written in the early 18th century and has become Marcello's most famous work. Bach wrote a keyboard transcription of the concerto.
Although the concerto was first published as Alessandro's in the early 18th century, it was grouped with Vivaldi concertos in some 18th century manuscripts and the 19th century first print of Bach's arrangement. One manuscript of the oboe version attributed it to Alessandro's brother Benedetto, and that was how the concerto was known for a large part of the 20th century, but from the late 20th century the concerto is generally again attributed to Alessandro.
The piece has three movements:
The concerto survives in different printed and manuscript versions, one of these in C minor.
Johann Sebastian Bach wrote a transcription of the piece in D minor for harpsichord (BWV 974), enhancing the dramatics of the first movement and embellishing the Adagio.
Glenn Herbert Gould (25 September 1932 – 4 October 1982) was a Canadian pianist who became one of the best-known and most celebrated classical pianists of the 20th century. He was particularly renowned as an interpreter of the keyboard music of Johann Sebastian Bach. His playing was distinguished by remarkable technical proficiency and capacity to articulate the polyphonic texture of Bach's music.
After his adolescence, Gould rejected most of the standard Romantic piano literature including Liszt, Schumann, and Chopin. Although his recordings were dominated by Bach, Gould's repertoire was diverse, including works by Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Brahms, pre-Baroque composers such as Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Orlando Gibbons and William Byrd, and such 20th-century composers as Paul Hindemith, Arnold Schoenberg and Richard Strauss. Gould was well known for various eccentricities, from his unorthodox musical interpretations and mannerisms at the keyboard to aspects of his lifestyle and personal behaviour. He stopped giving concerts at the age of 31 to concentrate on studio recording and other projects. Gould was the first pianist to record any of Liszt's piano transcriptions of Beethoven's symphonies (beginning with the Fifth Symphony, in 1967).

Bach: Concerto In D Minor After Alessandro Marcello, BWV 974 - 2. Adagio Glenn Gould
Alessandro Marcello - Concerto for oboe and strings - 2nd movement - Adagio - in D minor. Oboe played by Derek Wickens. Royal Philharmonic Orchestra lead by Elgar Howarth. For quite some time I was convinced that this composition was composed by Bernedetto Marcello, also because of wrong information on a label of a cd-case. Though I've been convinced that Alessandro Marcello - Benedetto's brother - is the true composer of this composition.
