Variations for Orchestra by Matt Doran, Donald Appert, Conductor, Jewish Community Orchestra of Portland, Oregon, Mittleman Jewish Community Center, November 10, 2013. "Matt Doran was the first to earn a DMA in Composition from USC. His Variations for Orchestra was commissioned by and composed for the Clark College Orchestra in 2004 and given its world premiere by the orchestra in June of 2006. I had heard a work he composed for the Clark College Woman's Vocal Ensemble and since I knew he had not written anything for orchestra in a number of years asked him to create this lovely piece. "It opens with a melancholy theme in the first violins which is passed through the string section. As the name indicates, there are variations on this melody utilizing the colors of the orchestra in different tempi and rhythmic ideas. After reaching it ultimate climax, the ending is extremely reflective in nature causing a great deal of introspection on the part of the listener. I have conducted this fine work also with the Oregon Sinfonietta here in Portland and as part of a concert with the Slovak Philharmonic which was a memorial in remembrance of the 10th anniversary of the events of 9/11 performed on September 11, 2011. I am pleased to say that commissioning this work opened a veritable floodgate for the composer! He went on to compose four symphonies, a short memorial to his daughter, and a Comic Overture. The composer is with us in the audience today and excited to hear his creation again." [From the program notes by Don Appert]
