For the Orson Welles centenary, an excerpt from his 1946 thriller, "The Stranger," in which he played an escaped Nazi war criminal hiding out as a schoolteacher in a bucolic New England town. In this scene, as students play games, he is reunited with another former Nazi, Meinike (Konstantin Shayne).
Though a program picture, it did contain stylistic touches (including long takes, striking camera angles and moody sound effects) that were recognizably Wellesian. Cinematography by Russell Metty. Music by Bronislau Kaper. (RKO Pictures)

The Stranger is often considered Orson Welles' most "traditional" Hollywood-style directorial effort. Welles plays a college professor named Charles Rankin, who lives in a pastoral Connecticut town with his lovely wife Mary (Loretta Young). One afternoon, an extremely nervous German gentleman named Meineke (Konstantin Shayne) arrives in town. Professor Rankin seems disturbed--but not unduly so--by Meineke's presence. He invites the stranger for a walk in the woods, and as they journey farther and farther away from the center of town, we learn that kindly professor Rankin is actually notorious Nazi war criminal Franz Kindler. Conscience-stricken by his own genocidal wartime activities, Meineke has come to town to beg his ex-superior Kindler to give himself up. The professor responds by brutally murdering his old associate. If Kindler believes himself safe--and he has every reason to do so, since no one in town, especially Mary, has any inkling of his previous life--he will change his mind in a hurry when mild-mannered war crimes commissioner Wilson (Edward G. Robinson) pays a visit, posing as an antiques dealer.

This clip begins as Mr Wilson (Edward G. Robinson) sets his sights on Professor Charles Rankin (Orson Welles). At the subsequent dinner party, Wilson attempts to get a feel for Rankin, and for whether he might be Franz Kindler (a fact already revealed to the audience). When Rankin argues that the Germans are so terrible that they should be exterminated, Wilson concludes that Rankin is "above suspicion". But something else that Rankin says later causes Wilson to reverse himself.
Note that, when Rankin advocates genocide, no one expresses horror. Wilson doesn't later tell his agency that Rankin is a crazed Germanophobe, but that he is "above suspicion". This scene is an artefact from an ill-remember era when preaching genocide was socially acceptable in America.
The argument given for Wilson's later reversal of opinion is itself worth commentary. Rankin denies that Karl Marx was a German because he was a Jew. Wilson rhetorically asks who but a Nazi could offer such an argument. The actual answer is that many people (including some grossly disenchanted Jews from Germany) had reached such a conclusion. There's a sort of civics lesson intended in this part of the script, but it's wretchedly unfair to a great many people.

Wilson of the War Crimes Commission is seeking Franz Kindler, mastermind of the Holocaust, who has effectively erased his identity. Wilson releases Kindler's former comrade Meinike and follows him to Harper, Connecticut, where he is killed before he can identify Kindler. Now Wilson's only clue is Kindler's fascination with antique clocks; but, though Kindler seems secure in his new identity, he feels his past closing in.

Theatrical trailer for the 1946 public domain thriller, THE STRANGER, starring Orson Welles, Loretta Young and Edward G. Robinson. It was one of the first Hollywood films to deal with the subject of pursuing Nazi war criminals and show concentration camp footage.
THE STRANGER was the only one Welles' original projects to show a profit on its initial release, but it was Welles' least favorite of his films.
The film's copyright was not renewed as required and it fell into the public domain. It is currently available from a variety of suppliers. The trailer did not bear a copyright notice and was never registered with the Library of Congerss.

The Stranger (1946 film)
The Stranger is a 1946 American film noir starring Edward G. Robinson, Loretta Young, and Orson Welles. It was Welles's third completed feature film as director. A drama about a war crimes investigator who tracks a high-ranking Nazi fugitive to a New England town, it is the first Hollywood film to present documentary footage of the Holocaust. The original story by Victor Trivas was nominated for an Academy Award. The film entered the public domain when its copyright was not renewed.
Plot
In 1946, Mr. Wilson (Edward G. Robinson) of the United Nations War Crimes Commission is hunting for Nazi fugitive Franz Kindler (Orson Welles), a war criminal who has erased all evidence which might identify him, with no clue left to his identity except "a hobby that almost amounts to a mania—clocks."
Wilson releases Kindler's former associate Meinike (Konstantin Shayne), hoping the man will lead him to Kindler. Wilson follows Meinike to the United States, to the town of Harper, Connecticut, but loses him before he meets with Kindler. Kindler has assumed a new identity and is known locally as "Charles Rankin," and has become a prep school teacher. He has married Mary Longstreet (Loretta Young), daughter of Supreme Court Justice Adam Longstreet (Philip Merivale), and is involved in repairing the town's 300-year-old Habrecht-style clock mechanism with religious automata that crowns the belfry of a church in the town square.

For the Orson Welles centenary, an excerpt from his 1946 thriller, "The Stranger," in which he played an escaped Nazi war criminal hiding out as a schoolteacher in a bucolic New England town. In this scene, as students play games, he is reunited with another former Nazi, Meinike (Konstantin Shayne). Though a program picture, it did contain stylistic touches (including long takes, striking camera angles and moody sound effects) that were recognizably Wellesian. Cinematography by Russell Metty. This clip begins as Mr Wilson (Edward G. Robinson) sets his sights on Professor Charles Rankin (Orson Welles). At the subsequent dinner party, Wilson attempts to get a feel for Rankin, and for whether he might be Franz Kindler (a fact already revealed to the audience). When Rankin argues that the Germans are so terrible that they should be exterminated, Wilson concludes that Rankin is "above suspicion". But something else that Rankin says later causes Wilson to reverse himself. Note that, when Rankin advocates genocide, no one expresses horror. Wilson doesn't later tell his agency that Rankin is a crazed Germanophobe, but that he is "above suspicion". The Stranger is often considered Orson Welles' most "traditional" Hollywood-style directorial effort. Welles plays a college professor named Charles Rankin, who lives in a pastoral Connecticut town with his lovely wife Mary (Loretta Young). One afternoon, an extremely nervous German gentleman named Meineke (Konstantin Shayne) arrives in town. Professor Rankin seems disturbed--but not unduly so--by Meineke's presence. He invites the stranger for a walk in the woods, and as they journey farther and farther away from the center of town, we learn that kindly professor Rankin is actually notorious Nazi war criminal Franz Kindler. Conscience-stricken by his own genocidal wartime activities, Meineke has come to town to beg his ex-superior Kindler to give himself up. The professor responds by brutally murdering his old associate. If Kindler believes himself safe--and he has every reason to do so, since no one in town, especially Mary, has any inkling of his previous life--he will change his mind in a hurry when mild-mannered war crimes commissioner Wilson (Edward G. Robinson) pays a visit, posing as an antiques dealer.

At the subsequent dinner party, Wilson attempts to get a feel for Rankin, and for whether he might be Franz Kindler (a fact already revealed to the audience). When Rankin argues that the Germans are so terrible that they should be exterminated, Wilson concludes that Rankin is "above suspicion". But something else that Rankin says later causes Wilson to reverse himself.
Note that, when Rankin advocates genocide, no one expresses horror. Wilson doesn't later tell his agency that Rankin is a crazed Germanophobe, but that he is "above suspicion". This scene is an artefact from an ill-remember era when preaching genocide was socially acceptable in America.
The argument given for Wilson's later reversal of opinion is itself worth commentary. Rankin denies that Karl Marx was a German because he was a Jew.
