Marilyn Pauline Novak, professionally known as Kim Novak (born February 13, 1933), is a retired American film and television actress.
She began her career in 1954 after signing with Columbia Pictures. There, she became a successful actress, starring in a string of movies, among them the critically acclaimed Picnic (1955). She later starred in such popular successes as The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) and Pal Joey (1957). However, she is perhaps best known today for her "dual role" as both Judy Barton and Madeleine Elster in Alfred Hitchcock's classic thriller Vertigo (1958). Novak was popular in box office popularity polls, and she starred opposite several top leading men of the era, including James Stewart, William Holden, Frank Sinatra, Tyrone Power, and Kirk Douglas.
Although still young, her career declined in the early 1960s, and after several years in a series of lackluster films, she withdrew from acting in 1966. She has only sporadically returned since. She later returned to the screen in The Mirror Crack'd (1980), and had a regular role on the prime time series Falcon Crest (1986–87). After a disappointing experience during the filming of Liebestraum (1991), she has permanently retired from acting, citing she has no desire to return.
William Holden (April 17, 1918 – November 12, 1981) was an American actor who was one of the biggest box office draws of the 1950s through the 1970s. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1953 for his role in Stalag 17, and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor for his role in the 1973 television film The Blue Knight.
Holden starred in some of Hollywood's most popular and critically acclaimed films, including such blockbusters as Sunset Boulevard, Sabrina, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Wild Bunch, Picnic, The Towering Inferno, and Network. He was named one of the "Top 10 Stars of the Year" six times (1954–1958, 1961), and appeared as 25th on the American Film Institute's list of 25 greatest male stars of Classic Hollywood Cinema.
Holden was born William Franklin Beedle, Jr. in O'Fallon, Illinois, the son of Mary Blanche (née Ball; 1898-1990), a schoolteacher, and William Franklin Beedle, Sr. (1891-1967), an industrial chemist. He had two younger brothers, Robert and Richard. Holden's paternal great-grandmother, Rebecca Westfield, was born in England in 1817, while some of his mother's ancestors settled in Virginia's Lancaster County after emigrating from England in the 17th century. His younger brother, Robert W. "Bobbie" Beedle, became a U.S. Navy fighter pilot and was killed in action in World War II, over New Ireland, on January 5, 1944.

Kim Novak danced with William Holden in the movie "Picnic" to the song "Moonglow" - the most mesmerizing, memorable sequence I've ever seen in a movie - there are several postings of this. Kim talks about the movies she's made, dating Frank Sinatra, being ordered by the studio to quit seeing Sammy Davis, Jr. (even though she claims it was only a platonic relationship), retiring to Oregon with her veterinarian husband, and much more. Sandra Shevey: I interviewed Kim twice..first time in the late Fifties for my high school newspaper and second time in the Seventies when she was filming `White Buffalo`. First time at the 57th Street apartment when her cat bit me. Didn`t mention `Vertigo` on either occasion. Film was an embarrassment for many many years. Love Animals: A great interview. ...
William Holden & Kim Novak dance, from the movie "Picnic." I love this scene from the movie "Picnic" from director Josh Logan, released in 1955, based on the play by William Inge. I've always identified, for whatever reason, with the character Hal Carter that Holden played in this film. So many great lines in "Picnic." "You don't love someone because they're perfect, Mom." Who hasn't thought that at one time or another in their lives? William Holden and Kim Novak were great in this, even though Holden thought he was too old to play the part of Hal. I heard he had to drink quite a bit to get up the nerve to do the "Moonglow" dancing scene in this clip. So memorable. So perfect. This clip appears courtesy of BFM Digital and IODA. Once i had a dream,
and then i walked a way,
a way i was looking for,
then i had to quit because i got afraid.
I got afraid of a door,
i made a wish heaven leaked.
I'd been getting near
and i hope to always search
and maybe find a way.
Now i stick around
on a strange intense day,
i seem resigned to my fate,
i spend my waking hours
mired in my dreams
I fell asleep in some lips,
then i was falling apart
like in a lost film
but then i woke with a start
keep on finding a way.
You're a leaf and your veins are birds
like rivers in silence they ring in me.
Don't worry if you leave,
i won't be wrapped around your stem but
will you walk a while more ?
There's children singing.
The sun is shining
around your fortress,
the sun is shining
will you walk a while more ?
will you walk a while more ?
