Harry Clifford Keel (April 13, 1919 – November 7, 2004), known professionally as Howard Keel was an American actor and singer. He starred in many film musicals of the 1950s. He is best known to modern audiences for his starring role in the CBS television series Dallas from 1981 to 1991, as Clayton Farlow, opposite Barbara Bel Geddes's character. But to an earlier generation, with his rich bass-baritone singing voice, he was known as the star of some of the most famous MGM film musicals ever made.
Keel was born Harry Clifford Keel in Gillespie, Illinois, to Navyman-turned-coalminer Homer Keel and his wife, Grace Osterkamp Keel. (It is often erroneously stated—by the MGM publicity department of the 1950s—that Keel's birth name was Harold Leek). Young Harry spent his childhood in poverty. One of his teachers, Miss Rosa Burke, noticed one day that he had no lunch. From that day forward, Miss Burke would pack two lunches – one for herself and one for Harry. When he became famous and would perform near Gillespie, Burke always received tickets to attend his performances. After his father's death in 1930, Keel and his mother moved to California, where he graduated from Fallbrook High School at age 17. He worked various odd jobs until settling at Douglas Aircraft Company as a traveling representative.
Kathryn Grayson (February 9, 1922 – February 17, 2010) was an American actress and soprano. From the age of twelve, Grayson trained as an opera singer. She was under contract to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer by the early 1940s, soon establishing a career principally through her work in musicals. After several supporting roles, she was a lead performer in such films as Thousands Cheer (1943), Anchors Aweigh (1945) with Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly, and Show Boat (1951) and Kiss Me Kate (1953), both with Howard Keel.
When film musical production declined, she worked in theatre, appearing in Camelot (1962–1964). Later in the decade she performed in several operas, including La bohème, Madama Butterfly, Orpheus in the Underworld and La traviata.
She was born Zelma Kathryn Elisabeth Hedrick in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the daughter of Charles E. Hedrick and Lillian Grayson Hedrick (1897–1955). Charles was a building contractor-realtor.
Lillian was of British descent and Charles was of German and Sicilian descent.
Howard is a popular English given name originating from Old Norse Hávarðr, which means "high guard". A diminutive is "Howie" and its shortened form is "Ward" (most common in the 19th century). Between 1900-1960, Howard ranked in the U.S. Top 200; between 1960–1990, it ranked in the U.S. Top 400; between 1990–2004, it ranked in the U.S. Top 600. People with the given name Howard or its variants include:
In boats and ships, keel can refer to either of two parts: a structural element that sometimes resembles a fin and protrudes below a boat along the central line, or a hydrodynamic element. These parts overlap. As the laying down of the keel is the initial step in construction of a ship, in British and American shipbuilding traditions the construction is dated from this event. Only the ship's launching is considered more significant in its creation.
The word can also be used as a synecdoche to refer to a complete boat, such as a keelboat.
A structural keel is a beam around which the hull of a ship is built. The keel runs in the middle of the ship, from the bow to the stern, and serves as a basic foundation or spine of the structure, providing the major source of structural strength of the hull. The keel is generally the first part of a ship's hull to be constructed, and laying the keel, or placing the keel in the cradle in which the ship will be built, is often a momentous event in a ship's construction — so much so that the event is often marked with a ceremony, and the term lay the keel has entered the language as a phrase meaning the beginning of any significant undertaking. Modern ships are now largely built in a series of pre-fabricated, complete hull sections rather than being built around a single keel, so the start of the shipbuilding process is now considered to be when the first sheet of steel is cut.
Michael Valentine "Val" Doonican (3 February 1927 – 1 July 2015) was an Irish singer of traditional pop, easy listening, and novelty songs, who was noted for his warm and relaxed style. A crooner, he found popular success, especially in the United Kingdom where he had five successive Top 10 albums in the 1960s as well as several hits on the UK Singles Chart, including "Walk Tall" and "Elusive Butterfly". The Val Doonican Show, which featured his singing and a variety of guests, had a long and successful run on BBC Television from 1965 to 1986 and Doonican won the Variety Club of Great Britain's BBC-TV Personality of the Year award three times. Doonican had a gentle baritone voice and, according to The Guardian, he had "an easygoing, homely charm that enchanted middle England".
Doonican was born on 3 February 1927 in Waterford, Ireland, the youngest of the eight children of Agnes (née Kavanagh) and John Doonican. He was from a musical family and played in his school band from the age of six. In 1941 when he was a teenager his father died, so he had to leave De La Salle College Waterford, to get factory jobs fabricating steel and making orange and grapefruit boxes. He began to perform in his hometown, often with his friend Bruce Clarke, and they had their first professional engagement as a duo in 1947. Doonican appeared in a summer season at Courtown Harbour, County Wexford. He soon featured on Irish radio, sometimes with Clarke, and appeared in Waterford's first-ever television broadcast. Then he played the drums in a band on a tour through Ireland.

Howard Keel first starred in the musical 'Oklahoma' on the London stage in 1947. Here he is back in London in 1992 on the Bruce Forsyth Show, singing a medley from the classic musical. As host of the show, Forsyth has to get in on the act, but Howard provides a faultless performance reminding us of when he ruled the Hollywood musical and the London and Broadway stages.

In 1993 Howard Keel undertook his 'Farewell Tour' of Great Britain. Here he is, appearing on 'Bruce Forsyth's Guest Night' singing something a little more contemporary from his repertoire. Needless to say the following year Howard returned to Great Britain for another series of sell-out concerts.

Sheriff Billy Kelly is shot down in Emporia, Wyoming, and the mayor and the local preacher send for a gunfighter, Waco, to help restore law and order. The preacher's wife, Jill Stone, is apprehensive lest Waco, unaware of her marriage, attempt to resume their former romance. Upon his arrival, Waco guns down the killers hired by the town boss, Joe Gore, fires the drunken deputy sheriff, cleans up the gambling saloon operated by Gore, and calls in his old saddle companion, Ace Ross, to assist him further in bringing peace to Emporia. After he evades a trap set for him by rancher Ma Jenner, the embittered mother of a man he killed, Waco prepares for the final showdown on the main street. Though Ross backs out, Waco is supported by both the preacher and the mayor. Gore, his henchmen, and the J...
Kathryn Grayson with Howard Keel Australian Nightclub Performance This has been in my collection for nearly 40 years and I'm now transferring old tapes to digital before the tapes disintegrate completely. Hope you enjoy this! Howard Keel was not singing very well at this stage of his career but the lovely Kathryn Grayson was charming as always. Some distortion on loud passages, but a rarity nevertheless and worth hearing.

Here is Howard being interviewed on the 'Bruce Forsyth Show' in 1993 shortly after completing his 'Farewell Tour' of Great Britain. Here is Howard performing before Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother at her 90th Birthday Gala in London's West End.
The final part of Howard's appearance on the 'Bruce Forsyth Show' sees him perform 'Old Man River' along with his host. I was fortunate to see Howard on this tour and his subsequent one in 1994. On each occasion there were no support artists, just Howard and a superb orchestra. At each performance he sang for 2 hours with an interval of 20 minutes. A remarkable achievement for a man in his mid 70's, particularly as he performed 35 nights without a break! He was in glorious voice and provided the audience with a taste of the golden age of Hollywood and Broadway.
