East Village is the name given to neighborhoods in a number of cities, and has other uses:
A part of Zetland, New South Wales
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.

Manhattan (/mænˈhætən/, /mənˈhætən/) is one of the five boroughs of New York City, in the state of New York in the United States. The borough is coterminous with New York County, founded on November 1, 1683 as one of the state's original counties. The borough consists mostly of Manhattan Island, bounded by the East, Hudson, and Harlem Rivers, and also includes several small adjacent islands and Marble Hill, a small neighborhood on the mainland.
Manhattan is often said to be the economic and cultural center of the United States and hosts the United Nations Headquarters. Anchored by Wall Street in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City has been called both the most economically powerful city and the leading financial center of the world, and Manhattan is home to the world's two largest stock exchanges by total market capitalization: the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. Many multinational media conglomerates are based in the borough. Historically documented to have been purchased by Dutch colonists from Native Americans in 1626, for the equivalent of US$1050, Manhattan real estate has since become among the most expensive in the world, with the value of Manhattan Island, including real estate, estimated to exceed US$3 trillion in 2013.
East is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. East is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of west and is perpendicular to north and south.
The word east comes from Middle English est, from Old English ēast, which itself comes from the Proto-Germanic *aus-to- or *austra- "east, toward the sunrise", from Proto-Indo-European *aus- "to shine," or "dawn". This is similar to Old High German *ōstar "to the east", Latin aurora "dawn", and Greek ēōs or heōs.Ēostre, a Germanic goddess of dawn, might have been a personification of both dawn and the cardinal points.
By convention, the right hand side of a map is east. This convention has developed from the use of a compass, which places north at the top.
To go east using a compass for navigation, set a bearing or azimuth of 90°.
East is the direction toward which the Earth rotates about its axis, and therefore the general direction from which the Sun appears to rise. The practice of praying towards the East is older than Christianity, but has been adopted by this religion as the Orient was thought of as containing mankind's original home. Hence, most Christian churches are oriented towards the east.
A village is a clustered human settlement or community, larger than a hamlet but smaller than a town, with a population ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand. Though often located in rural areas, the term urban village is also applied to certain urban neighbourhoods. Villages are normally permanent, with fixed dwellings; however, transient villages can occur. Further, the dwellings of a village are fairly close to one another, not scattered broadly over the landscape, as a dispersed settlement.
In the past, villages were a usual form of community for societies that practise subsistence agriculture, and also for some non-agricultural societies. In Great Britain, a hamlet earned the right to be called a village when it built a church. In many cultures, towns and cities were few, with only a small proportion of the population living in them. The Industrial Revolution attracted people in larger numbers to work in mills and factories; the concentration of people caused many villages to grow into towns and cities. This also enabled specialization of labor and crafts, and development of many trades. The trend of urbanization continues, though not always in connection with industrialization. Villages have been eclipsed in importance as units of human society and settlement.

Once the center of New York bohemia, the East Village has emerged as a hipper version of the West Village.
I spent 3 years in this apartment. $2,500/month 1BR in East Village, Manhattan, NYC. We put up a fake wall to turn the living room into another bedroom. 5th floor walkup, building built in 1920, etc. Terrible apartment, but the location was clutch. Sadly most young New Yorkers also live in similar tenement-like shitholes. We really need more quality affordable housing (and by affordable housing, I'm referring to affordable housing for everyone, not just poor people making $30k/yr who've been waiting on a lottery list for 10 years). I've since moved out. If you're interested in renting this apartment, contact Matel Realty, the property management company for the building (office on 6th St and 3rd Ave), to avoid paying the broker's fee. East Village is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, bordered to the west by Greenwich Village, to the north by Gramercy Park and Stuyvesant Town, to the south by the Lower East Side, and to the east by the East River. Generally, although definitions vary on the neighborhood's exact street boundaries, East Village is considered to be the area east of Third Avenue and the Bowery to the East River, between 14th Street and Houston Street. The area was once generally considered to be part of the Lower East Side, but began to develop its own identity and culture in the late 1960s, when many artists, musicians, students and hippies began to move into the area, attracted by cheap rents and the base of Beatniks who had lived there since the 1950s. The neighborhood has becom...

From the Upper East Side to the East Village, Manhattan seems to have infinite choices of where to eat. Edible Manhattan is a new quarterly magazine that investigates this diverse food culture--more investigative journalism than food porn, more historical profile than restaurant gossip. Luis Jaramillo, associate chair of The New School Writing Program, moderates a reading from the inaugural issue of the magazine. Participants include Brian Halweil, executive editor of Edible Manhattan and senior researcher and John Gardner Public Service Fellow at Worldwatch Institute; Gabrielle Langholtz, editor of Edible Brooklyn and Edible Manhattan, faculty in NYU's Food Studies program, and publicity manager for Greenmarket; and Michael Harlan Turkell, photo editor for Edible Manhattan. Memorial Day - Monday, May 25th, 2015 - Drove from Long Island City in Queens, to the East side of Manhattan, then proceeded to drive south, down 2nd ave to the East Village. Ran some errands along 26th st. and 5th st. Drove back to LIC via 1st ave. Uneventful drive.
This documentary was made by my dear friend Stuart Scott, about how it is likely that humanity won't survive past as early as next summer, due to polar ice caps melting at an alarming rate which, with the permafrost melting, is releasing methane at an alarming rate. My friend and I hope it goes viral. There's no money in this: saving humanity. It's not about music (I used to play several instruments) or fashion, but helping to make the right decisions so that we humans don't have to become extinct. There are places that might be 105 degrees fahrenheit every day. Then where will the people go? We are talking wars, mass famine, etc. (Reality, coming to you...soon.) We need to change parameters. It can no longer be about money and power. That's how we got into this mess in the first place. ...
