The BMW 5 Series is the German firm’s mid-size saloon that is full to the brim with technology. The 5 Series features an interior heavily borrowed form the 7 Series, but scaled down to fit. Buyers have a whole host of technological options but, the award winning iDrive comes as standard. However, can the 5 Series match the desirable look and interior of the Mercedes E-Class? I take a look at the new 7th generation BMW 5 Series, and specifically a 530d; playing around with the new remote key and vast array of features present in the car.
After a look throughout during the BMW UK press launch in Spain, it's off for a drive in the local region before also having a play with the new BMW Connected app and the capabilities within.

Be one of the first to discover the all-new BMW 5 Series. The seventh generation is equipped with the latest assistance systems, an unmatched degree of connectivity and a new and innovative operating system.
It also takes another step towards automated driving with extended functions for the optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) system and Steering and Lane keeping assistant. From rest to 210 km/h (130 mph), the car can relieve the driver of acceleration, braking and steering duties, as desired. The optional Remote Parking system allows the BMW 5 Series Sedan to be manoeuvred into even the tightest parking spaces remotely using the car key.
In top specification, the all-new BMW 5 Series displays navigation, telephone and entertainment features, plus vehicle functions, on a high-resolution 10.25-inch screen. The system can be operated using the iDrive Controller, by voice command or gestures, or by touching the display controls directly, as the driver wishes.
All the engines in the 5 Series Sedan line-up belong to the newly developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics family of power units. A surround sound system from Bowers & Wilkins with diamond tweeters is available for the first time in the all-new BMW 5 Series range. This optional highend audio system is renowned for delivering the ultimate in listening pleasure. The 10-channel amplifier feeds a total of 16 speakers with brushed stainless steel grilles sporting the exclusive Fibonacci-patterned holes, which illuminate when the system is switched on. Total output is an impressive 1,400 watts. A measuring microphone is built into the car to allow the acoustics to be precision tuned to the specific conditions - for example, the number of occupants - in order to create a flawless surround sound experience for everyone in the car. What's more, the sound setting can be matched to the selected music genre.

BMW 5 Series
The BMW 5-Series is a mid-size luxury car manufactured by German automaker BMW since 1972. It is the successor to the 4-door sedan models of the BMW New Class and is currently in its sixth generation.
Initially, the 5 Series was only available in a sedan body style. The touring body style was added in 1991 and the 5-door hatchback ("Gran Turismo") was added in 2009.
It is BMW's second best-selling model after the 3-Series and in 2010 produced about 50% of the BMW's profits.
On January 29, 2008, the 5 millionth 5-Series was manufactured, a 530d Saloon in Carbon Black Metallic.
The 5-Series got its name by being the fifth of the "new series" cars after the V-8 and Isetta era and was the replacement for the older four-door New Class sedans. The current BMW naming convention began with the first 5-Series.

History
BMW was established as a business entity following a restructuring of the Rapp Motorenwerke aircraft manufacturing firm in 1917. After the end of World War I in 1918, BMW was forced to cease aircraft-engine production by the terms of the Versailles Armistice Treaty. The company consequently shifted to motorcycle production as the restrictions of the treaty started to be lifted in 1923, followed by automobiles in 1928–29.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a range of executive cars manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in various engine and body configurations produced since 1993. Prior to 1993, Mercedes-Benz offered the same category of car under a non-unified naming structure. The E initially stood for Einspritzmotor (German for fuel injection engine); a new feature in volume production vehicles at the time that the E-Class first appeared, with the E as a suffix to the engine nomenclature (e.g. 230E) in the 1960s. It was not until the launch of the facelifted W124 in 1993 that the E was used as a prefix (i.e., E 220) and the model referred to officially as the E-Class (or E-Klasse). At this time all Mercedes cars used fuel injection and the company felt it was no longer necessary to add this as a distinguishing feature. Due to the E-Class's size and durability, the cars also frequently serve as taxis in European and Asian countries. Mercedes-Benz also offers special-purpose vehicles (e.g., police or ambulance modifications) from the factory.

A surround sound system from Bowers & Wilkins with diamond tweeters is available for the first time in the all-new BMW 5 Series range. This optional highend audio system is renowned for delivering the ultimate in listening pleasure. The 10-channel amplifier feeds a total of 16 speakers with brushed stainless steel grilles sporting the exclusive Fibonacci-patterned holes, which illuminate when the system is switched on. Total output is an impressive 1,400 watts. A measuring microphone is built into the car to allow the acoustics to be precision tuned to the specific conditions - for example, the number of occupants - in order to create a flawless surround sound experience for everyone in the car. What's more, the sound setting can be matched to the selected music genre. -

Be one of the first to discover the all-new BMW 5 Series. The seventh generation is equipped with the latest assistance systems, an unmatched degree of connectivity and a new and innovative operating system.
It also takes another step towards automated driving with extended functions for the optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) system and Steering and Lane keeping assistant. From rest to 210 km/h (130 mph), the car can relieve the driver of acceleration, braking and steering duties, as desired. The optional Remote Parking system allows the BMW 5 Series Sedan to be manoeuvred into even the tightest parking spaces remotely using the car key.
In top specification, the all-new BMW 5 Series displays navigation, telephone and entertainment features, plus vehicle functions, on a high-resolution 10.25-inch screen. The system can be operated using the iDrive Controller, by voice command or gestures, or by touching the display controls directly, as the driver wishes.
All the engines in the 5 Series Sedan line-up belong to the newly developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics family of power units. It also takes another step towards automated driving with extended functions for the optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) system and Steering and Lane keeping assistant. From rest to 210 km/h (130 mph), the car can relieve the driver of acceleration, braking and steering duties, as desired. The optional Remote Parking system allows the BMW 5 Series Sedan to be manoeuvred into even the tightest parking spaces remotely using the car key.
In top specification, the all-new BMW 5 Series displays navigation, telephone and entertainment features, plus vehicle functions, on a high-resolution 10.25-inch screen. The system can be operated using the iDrive Controller, by voice command or gestures, or by touching the display controls directly, as the driver wishes.
All the engines in the 5 Series Sedan line-up belong to the newly developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics family of power units.
