Jagatpita Brahma Mandir is a Hindu temple situated at Pushkar in the Indian state of Rajasthan, close to the sacred Pushkar Lake to which its legend has an indelible link. The temple is one of very few existing temples dedicated to the Hindu creator-god Brahma in India and remains the most prominent among them. Although the present temple structure dates to the 14th century, the temple is believed to be 2000 years old.

Pushkar is a holy town in Rajasthan most famous for its Brahma Temple (one of the Hindu holy trinity), its ghats spread around the lake and yearly Pushkar Camel Fair. (Visitors are not allowed to photograph or video inside the temple.) Pushkar is also one of India's oldest existing cities.
I never expected Pushkar to be as colorful and filled with markets as it was and could have spent the day wandering through the small streets and stalls. The town really deserved more than the few hours we had time to spend there.

Other temples of Brahma include Bithoor in Uttar Pradesh, India; Khedbrahma in Gujarat, India; village Asotra near Balotra city of Barmer district in Rajasthan; Uttamar Kovil (one of the Divya Desams) near Srirangam, Tamil Nadu; Carambolim near Valpoi in Goa, Mother Temple of Besakih in Bali, Indonesia; and Prambanan in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. One crazy day of chilling, dancing and colour throwing: Holi .
There are various type of holi played around the country and Pushkar Holi has got different identity among all the holi played in India. Holi is the spring festival of India, celebrated by playing with vibrant colors. The colorful festival is the wonderful opportunity to reconnect to the family and friends by applying colour on their faces. Holi commemorates the victory of good over evil, brought about by the burning and destruction of the demoness named Holika. This was enabled through unwavering devotion to the Hindu god of preservation, Lord Vishnu.
(The Holi Festival of Colors celebrates the triumph of good over evil and ushers in the spring season. A commenter took issue with my description of the story behind the holiday, and it turns out my description was slightly inaccurate, so I'll post her comment here with a few minor edits of my own: Holi is celebrated because Prahlad Maharaj who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu kept chanting Lord Krishna's name, in spite of his demonic father Hiranyakashipu disliking. So Hiranyakashipu, along with his sister Holika, plotted to kill his own son. Holika had been blessed that she wouldn't be burned in the fire, so she sat in the fire with Prahlad Maharaj. Prahlad Maharaj kept chanting Lord Krishna's name, and finally Holika was burned [and Prahlad Majaraj was not] because she misused her blessing against the innocent.)))))))
Holi got its name as the "Festival of Colors" from Lord Krishna, a re-incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who liked to play pranks on the village girls by drenching them in water and colors. The festival marks the end of winter and the abundance of the upcoming spring harvest season.

Holi
Holi (pronunciation: /ˈhoʊliː/; Sanskrit: होली Holī) is a spring festival, also known as the festival of colours or the festival of Sharing love. It is an ancient Hindu religious festival which has become popular with non-Hindus in many parts of South Asia, as well as people of other communities outside Asia.
It is primarily observed in India, Nepal, and other regions of the world with significant populations of Hindus or people of Indian origin. In recent years the festival has spread to parts of Europe and North America as a spring celebration of love, frolic, and colours.
Holi celebrations start on the night before Holi with a Holika bonfire where people gather, sing, dance and party. The next morning is a free-for-all carnival of colours, where participants play, chase and colour each other with dry powder and coloured water, with some carrying water guns and coloured water-filled balloons for their water fight. Anyone and everyone is fair game, friend or stranger, rich or poor, man or woman, children and elders. The frolic and fight with colours occurs in the open streets, open parks, outside temples and buildings. Groups carry drums and other musical instruments, go from place to place, sing and dance. People visit family, friends and foes to throw colour powders on each other, laugh and gossip, then share Holi delicacies, food and drinks. Some drinks are intoxicating. For example, Bhang, an intoxicating ingredient made from cannabis leaves, is mixed into drinks and sweets and consumed by many. In the evening, after sobering up, people dress up and visit friends and family.

There are various type of holi played around the country and Pushkar Holi has got different identity among all the holi played in India. Holi is the spring festival of India, celebrated by playing with vibrant colors. The colorful festival is the wonderful opportunity to reconnect to the family and friends by applying colour on their faces. Holi commemorates the victory of good over evil, brought about by the burning and destruction of the demoness named Holika. This was enabled through unwavering devotion to the Hindu god of preservation, Lord Vishnu. (The Holi Festival of Colors celebrates the triumph of good over evil and ushers in the spring season. A commenter took issue with my description of the story behind the holiday, and it turns out my description was slightly inaccurate, so I'll post her comment here with a few minor edits of my own: Holi is celebrated because Prahlad Maharaj who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu kept chanting Lord Krishna's name, in spite of his demonic father Hiranyakashipu disliking. So Hiranyakashipu, along with his sister Holika, plotted to kill his own son. Holika had been blessed that she wouldn't be burned in the fire, so she sat in the fire with Prahlad Maharaj. Prahlad Maharaj kept chanting Lord Krishna's name, and finally Holika was burned [and Prahlad Majaraj was not] because she misused her blessing against the innocent.))))))) Holi got its name as the "Festival of Colors" from Lord Krishna, a re-incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who liked to play pranks on the village girls by drenching them in water and colors. The festival marks the end of winter and the abundance of the upcoming spring harvest season. http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Pushkar is a holy town in Rajasthan most famous for its Brahma Temple (one of the Hindu holy trinity), its ghats spread around the lake and yearly Pushkar Camel Fair. (Visitors are not allowed to photograph or video inside the temple.) Pushkar is also one of India's oldest existing cities. I never expected Pushkar to be as colorful and filled with markets as it was and could have spent the day wandering through the small streets and stalls. The town really deserved more than the few hours we had time to spend there.

Pushkar is a holy town in Rajasthan most famous for its Brahma Temple (one of the Hindu holy trinity), its ghats spread around the lake and yearly Pushkar Camel Fair. (Visitors are not allowed to photograph or video inside the temple.) Pushkar is also one of India's oldest existing cities.
I never expected Pushkar to be as colorful and filled with markets as it was and could have spent the day wandering through the small streets and stalls. The town really deserved more than the few hours we had time to spend there.

It is situated 14 km (8.7 mi) northwest of Ajmer at an average elevation of 510 m (1,670 ft) and is one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage site) for devout Hindus. According to Hindu theology, the pond at the Katas Raj temple Near Choa Saidan Shah in Chakwal District of Pakistan has a theological association with Shiva; it was formed by the tears of Lord Shiva which he is believed to have shed after the death of his wife, Sati. The story goes that when Sati died, Shiva cried so much and for so long, that his tears created two holy ponds – one at Pushkara in Ajmer in India and the other at Ketaksha, which literally means raining eyes, in Sanskrit. It is from this name that the word Katas is derived. It is often called "Tirth Raj" – the king of pilgrimage sites – and has in recent years become a popular destination for foreign tourists.
Pushkar is one of the oldest existing cities of India. It lies on the shore of Pushkar Lake. The date of its actual origin is not known, but legend associates Brahma with its creation.
Pushkar has many temples. Most of the temples are not very old because many temples were destroyed during Muslim conquests in the area. Subsequently, the destroyed temples were rebuilt. The most famous among all is the Brahma Temple built during the 14th century CE. Very few temples to Lord Brahma exist anywhere in the world. Other temples of Brahma include Bithoor in Uttar Pradesh, India; Khedbrahma in Gujarat, India; village Asotra near Balotra city of Barmer district in Rajasthan; Uttamar Kovil (one of the Divya Desams) near Srirangam, Tamil Nadu; Carambolim near Valpoi in Goa, Mother Temple of Besakih in Bali, Indonesia; and Prambanan in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The Pushkar lake has 52 ghats where pilgrims descend to the lake to bathe in the sacred waters.
Pushkar is also famous for its annual fair (Pushkar Camel Fair) held in November.

One crazy day of chilling, dancing and colour throwing: Holi .
There are various type of holi played around the country and Pushkar Holi has got different identity among all the holi played in India. Holi is the spring festival of India, celebrated by playing with vibrant colors. The colorful festival is the wonderful opportunity to reconnect to the family and friends by applying colour on their faces. Holi commemorates the victory of good over evil, brought about by the burning and destruction of the demoness named Holika. This was enabled through unwavering devotion to the Hindu god of preservation, Lord Vishnu.
(The Holi Festival of Colors celebrates the triumph of good over evil and ushers in the spring season. A commenter took issue with my description of the story behind the holiday, and it turns out my description was slightly inaccurate, so I'll post her comment here with a few minor edits of my own: Holi is celebrated because Prahlad Maharaj who was a devotee of Lord Vishnu kept chanting Lord Krishna's name, in spite of his demonic father Hiranyakashipu disliking. So Hiranyakashipu, along with his sister Holika, plotted to kill his own son. Holika had been blessed that she wouldn't be burned in the fire, so she sat in the fire with Prahlad Maharaj. Prahlad Maharaj kept chanting Lord Krishna's name, and finally Holika was burned [and Prahlad Majaraj was not] because she misused her blessing against the innocent.)))))))
Holi got its name as the "Festival of Colors" from Lord Krishna, a re-incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who liked to play pranks on the village girls by drenching them in water and colors. The festival marks the end of winter and the abundance of the upcoming spring harvest season.

Day 8 I moved to a hostel and just chilled out with some fellow backpackers and then on Day 9 I fell ill, again so didn’t do much except wonder around the central park! Day 10 back to normal and headed to Pushkar, Jaipur I will probably come back to as I did not have a chance to do the forts.

Pushkar is a holy town in Rajasthan most famous for its Brahma Temple (one of the Hindu holy trinity), its ghats spread around the lake and yearly Pushkar Camel Fair. (Visitors are not allowed to photograph or video inside the temple.) Pushkar is also one of India's oldest existing cities.
I never expected Pushkar to be as colorful and filled with markets as it was and could have spent the day wandering through the small streets and stalls. The town really deserved more than the few hours we had time to spend there.

Once arriving in Varanasi, we pushed on to Agra, Delhi, Jaipur, Pushkar and Uaipur. This part of my trip I would say is the quintessential part of India, the type of experience one conjures up in their head when they think about India. And it did not disappoint!
