Norfolk Island (i/ˈnɔːrfək ˈaɪlənd/; Norfuk: Norf'k Ailen) is a small island in the Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, 1,412 kilometres (877 mi) directly east of mainland Australia's Evans Head, and about 900 kilometres (560 mi) from Lord Howe Island. The island is part of the Commonwealth of Australia. Together with two neighbouring islands, it forms one of Australia's external territories. It has 2,300 inhabitants living on a total area of about 35 km2 (14 sq mi). Its capital is Kingston.
Originally settled by East Polynesians, Norfolk Island was colonised by Great Britain as part of its settlement of Australia in 1788, at which point it was uninhabited. The island served as a convict penal settlement until May 1855, except for an 11-year hiatus between 1814 and 1825, when it was abandoned. In 1856, permanent civilian residence on the island began when it was settled from Pitcairn Island. In 1901, the island became a part of the Commonwealth of Australia.
Norfolk /ˈnɔːrfək/ is a county in East Anglia. It borders Lincolnshire to the west and north-west, Cambridgeshire to the west and southwest, and Suffolk to the south. Its northern and eastern boundaries are the North Sea and, to the north-west, The Wash. The county town is Norwich.
With an area of 2,074 square miles and a population of 859,400, Norfolk is a largely rural county with a population density of 401 per square mile. Forty per cent of the county's population live in four major built up areas: Norwich (213,000), Great Yarmouth (63,000), King's Lynn (46,000) and Thetford (25,000).
The Broads is a network of rivers and lakes on the county's east coast, extending south into Suffolk. The area is a National Park and is protected by the Broads Authority.
Norfolk was settled in pre-Roman times, with camps along the higher land in the west where flints could be quarried. A Brythonic tribe, the Iceni, inhabited the county from the 1st century BC to the end of the 1st century AD. The Iceni revolted against the Roman invasion in 47 AD, and again in 60 AD led by Boudica. The crushing of the second rebellion opened the county to the Romans. During the Roman era in Norfolk roads and ports were constructed throughout the county and farming took place widely.
An island /ˈaɪlənd/ or isle /ˈaɪl/ is any piece of sub-continental land that is surrounded by water. Very small islands such as emergent land features on atolls can be called islets, skerries, cays or keys. An island in a river or a lake island may be called an eyot or ait, or a holm. A grouping of geographically or geologically related islands is called an archipelago, e.g. the Philippines.
An island may be described as such despite the presence of an artificial land bridge, for example Singapore and its causeway, or the various Dutch delta islands, such as IJsselmonde. Some places may even retain "island" in their names for historical reasons after being connected to a larger landmass by a wide land bridge, such as Coney Island or Coronado Island. Conversely, when a piece of land is separated from the mainland by a man-made canal, for example the Peloponnese by the Corinth Canal, it is generally not considered an island.
There are two main types of islands: continental islands and oceanic islands. There are also artificial islands.
The First Fleet is the name given to the 11 ships that left Great Britain on 13 May 1787 to found the penal colony that became the first European settlement in Australia. The fleet consisted of two Royal Navy vessels, three store ships and six convict transports, carrying more than 1,000 convicts, marines and seamen, and a vast quantity of stores. From England, the Fleet sailed southwest to Rio de Janeiro, then east to Cape Town and via the Great Southern Ocean to Botany Bay, arriving in mid-January 1788, taking 250 to 252 days from departure to final arrival.
Convicts were originally transported to the Thirteen Colonies in North America, but after the American Revolutionary War ended in 1783, the newly formed United States refused to accept further convicts. On 6 December 1785, Orders in Council were issued in London for the establishment of a penal colony in New South Wales, on land claimed for Britain by explorer James Cook in his first voyage to the Pacific in 1770.
Norfolk Island is a small island in the Pacific ocean between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. With pristine views 360 degrees all round. It is a self-governing island and has a fascinating history of convicts and mutineers. Along with a quirky style of Government. Many of its people are direct descendents of Fletcher Christian and his bounty mutineers. A proud people, they have their own language and culture and celebrate their traditions on the annual Bounty Day.

This video is the epitome of how gorgeous and authentic Norfolk Island really is. Everything about Norfolk is beautiful, including the people there. They are the kindest and most caring group of people I have ever met, and I am truly honoured to have witnessed their friendship with one another. They truly made me feel welcome, after all the years it had been since I had visited, with my mum returning to her childhood home. After reluctantly returning to our home, we had to remind ourself to lock the house and the car doors, with the absence of people waving back in return to us when we drove past. I really miss spending time with my family over there. I miss the feeling of being safe every where I go, with the reassurance that no-one judges one another and loves each other equally. I miss...
There's a story not often told about the First Fleet settlement of Australia in 1788. It's the tale of The First Fleet's second mission - settle Norfolk Island. This small colony in the South Pacific started just 3-months after Sydney Cove was settled in 1788 even went on to save the main Sydney colony from starvation a number of times. Here's my quick-take on this fascinating chapter of Australian colonial history. If you're keen to experience Norfolk Island yourself then join me on my next tour in October 2014 http://tiny.cc/85ewax If you like my videos don't forget to visit me on FaceBook! http://tiny.cc/j7qdu
Once a popular tourist destination where locals didn't pay Australian income tax, Norfolk Island is now facing economic ruin but the Federal Government wants some quid pro quo for any help given.
