Jodhpur (/ˈdʒɒdpʊər/ Listen ) is the second largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. After its population crossed a million, it has been declared as the second "Metropolitan City" of Rajasthan. It was formerly the seat of a princely state of the same name, the capital of the kingdom known as Marwar. Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination, featuring many palaces, forts and temples, set in the stark landscape of the Thar Desert.
The city is known as the "Sun City" for the bright, sunny weather it enjoys all the year round. It is also referred to as the "Blue City" due to the vivid blue-painted houses around the Mehrangarh Fort. It is the hometown of Meghraj Lohiya, a senior BJP Leader and present Chairman (status of Minister of State) of Rajasthan Small Industries Corporation Ltd. The old city circles the fort and is bounded by a wall with several gates. However, the city has expanded greatly outside the wall over the past several decades. Jodhpur lies near the geographic centre of Rajasthan state, which makes it a convenient base for travel in a region much frequented by tourists.

India, officially the Republic of India (Bhārat Gaṇarājya), is a country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by area, the second-most populous country with over 1.2 billion people, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the south-west, and the Bay of Bengal on the south-east, it shares land borders with Pakistan to the west;China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Myanmar (Burma) and Bangladesh to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka and the Maldives; in addition, India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands share a maritime border with Thailand and Indonesia.
Home to the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism—originated here, whereas Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam arrived in the 1st millennium CE and also shaped the region's diverse culture. Gradually annexed by and brought under the administration of the British East India Company from the early 18th century and administered directly by the United Kingdom after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, India became an independent nation in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by non-violent resistance led by Mahatma Gandhi.
Mehrangarh Fort (Hindi: मेहरानगढ़ का किला) (Sindhi: مهراڻ ڳڙهه), located in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, is one of the largest forts in India. Built around 1460 by Rao Jodha, the fort is situated 410 feet (125 m) above the city and is enclosed by imposing thick walls. Inside its boundaries there are several palaces known for their intricate carvings and expansive courtyards. A winding road leads to and from the city below. The imprints of cannonball hits by attacking armies of Jaipur can still be seen on the second gate. To the left of the fort is the chhatri of Kirat Singh Soda, a soldier who fell on the spot defending the Mehrangarh fort.
There are seven gates, which include Jayapol (meaning 'victory'), built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies. Fattehpol (also meaning 'victory') gate was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh to mark the defeat of the Mughals. The palm imprints upon these still attract much attention it is very proudes for rao rajputs.

Traveling India: Jodhpur, the blue city. Second largest city in Rajasthan, expect chaotic streets and beautiful views. The blue-washed buildings of old city Jodhpur with the warm red sandstone glow of Mehrangarh Fort, creates a surreal and mesmerizing experience. The views are especially brilliant at sunrise and sunset. Mehrangarh Fort is one of the largest, most well preserved forts in India. Relaxing on the rooftops, you almost forget you're in a city. We were grateful to find our quiet little oasis at Singhvi's Haveli near the base of the fort. But as you get further away from the fort, navigating the narrow pathways and streets on foot becomes next to impossible. The combination of intense noise, constant honking, motorbikes, auto rickshaws, cars, cows, dogs, elephants, and burrows o...

Join us as we visit Jodhpur in this city travel guide covering the best things to do in the 'Blue City' of Rajasthan, India. Our travel video in Rajasthan (राजस्थान ਰਾਜਸਥਾਨ) covering the 'sun city' focusses on visiting Mehrangarh Fort (मेहरानगढ़ का दुर्ग) for some incredible views of the city and heading over to the Sardar Market (सरदार बाजार) nearby the Ghanta Ghar clock tower of Rajasthan where you can find great places to shop and grab Rajasthani cuisine (राजस्थानी खाना) and a saffron lassi. We especially recommend Jhankar restaurant where we had the best Rajasthani Thali (थाली) and regular Thali during our entire India travels. Jodhpur (जोधपुर) is also worth exploring on foot or tuk-tuk where you can just get lost down the myriad of colorful alleys. For dinner we suggest rooftop views ...

Travel video about destination Rajasthan in India. Rajasthan, Land of Kings and one of the most unique and colorful provinces in northern India is on the border with Pakistan. The barren desert landscape was once the home of the Rajputs, which ruled over the land for more than 1,000 years. Our journey begins in Jaipur, the 'Pink City', where the buildings consist of the reddish stone of the surrounding landscape. Much to the surprise of tourists, the local people continue to use the elephant as a means of transport in this splendid trading town. However, modern traffic with its cars, tuk-tuk taxis and countless bicycles has also found its way into this fairytale-like city. An artificial lake suddenly appears in the centre of which is the beautiful Jal Mahal Castle. Amid the arid, rocky land...
Travel video about destination Rajasthan in India. Rajasthan, Land Of Kings and one of the most unique and colourful provinces in northern India on the border with Pakistan. The barren desert landscape was once the home of the Rajputes that ruled over the land for more than a thousand years. Our journey begins in Agra. Situated on the border with Rajasthan this imposing metropolis of the Moguln monarchs is an ideal starting point. The palace city, the Red Fortress, was three generations in construction. A two and a half kilometre long wall with many bastions surrounds a spacious inner courtyard and numerous palace buildings. Although artistic stone masonry decorates a number of red sandstone arcades, most of the buildings are of marble. The ruling monarch and his royal household once held o...
** Please expand the description box for itinerary & music details** February 18, 2015 www.instagram.com/timandglo We ventured further into Rajasthan Province by taking the train from Jaipur to Jodhpur. We stayed at The Blue House, a quaint guesthouse housed in a 500-year-old Haveli near the Clock Tower and Sardar Market. Since arriving in India five days prior, this was our first chance to sleep in...so we took advantage. We slept in until 10:00 followed by breakfast at the Blue House's rooftop cafe. We highly recommend their banana and honey porridge as well as Nutella crepes! Breakfast is not included in the room rate, but it's very affordable. The cafe is open air and has a nice day and night view of Merangarh Fort. We decided to postpone a visit to the Fort - the city's top tou...
