The Göta Canal (Swedish: Göta kanal) is a Swedish canal constructed in the early 19th century. It formed the backbone of a waterway stretching some 614 km (382 mi), linking a number of lakes and rivers to provide a route from Gothenburg on the west coast to Söderköping on the Baltic Sea via the river Göta älv and the Trollhätte kanal, through the large lakes Vänern and Vättern.
The canal itself is 190 km (120 mi) long, of which 87 km (54 mi) were dug or blasted, with a width varying between 7–14 m (23–46 ft) and a maximum depth of about 3 m (9.8 ft). It has 58 locks and can accommodate vessels up to 32 m (105 ft) long, 7 m (23 ft) wide and 2.8 m (9.2 ft) in draft. Göta Canal is a sister canal of Caledonian Canal in Scotland, which was also constructed by Thomas Telford.
The idea of a canal across southern Sweden was first put forward as early as 1516, by Hans Brask, the bishop of Linköping. However, it was not until the start of the 19th century that Brask's proposals were put into action by Baltzar von Platen, a German-born former officer in the Swedish Navy. He organised the project and obtained the necessary financial and political backing. His plans attracted the enthusiastic backing of the government and the new king, Charles XIII, who saw the canal as a way of kick-starting the modernisation of Sweden. Von Platen himself extolled the modernising virtues of the canal in 1806, claiming that mining, agriculture and other industries would benefit from "a navigation way through the country."
Canals and navigations are human-made channels for water. In the vernacular both are referred to as 'canals'. The main difference between them is that a navigation parallels a river and shares its drainage basin, while a canal cuts across a drainage divide.
A navigation is a series of channels that run roughly parallel to the valley and stream bed of an unimproved river. A navigation always shares the drainage basin of the river. A vessel uses the calm parts of the river itself as well as improvements, traversing the same changes in height.
A true canal is a channel that cuts across a drainage divide, making a navigable channel connecting two different drainage basins.
Most commercially important canals of the first half of the 19th-century were a little of each, using rivers in long stretches, and divide crossing canals in others. This is true for many canals still in use.
Both navigations and canals use engineered structures to improve navigation:

Bike trip along the Göta Canal in Sweden heading for Sjötorp on 9 July 2014 with a view to the greatest European lake The Vänern. At min. 1.30 I almost was bitten by an insect during my ride, so I had to stop in the middle of my recording and vipe the beast away, and at the end of the video I say some rubbish about the Vättern. What you see is of course the lake Vänern at Sjötorp from where you can sail to Vänersborg/Trollhättan and the Göta älv :)

Modern time wonder Gota Kanal in Sweden. Gothenburg is Sweden’s second largest seaport and is located on the west coast and is the country’s military and economic "Gateway To The World" whose rapid prosperity came when the city’s merchants created their own "East India Company" in true Dutch style. We are going on a journey on the Göta Canal that travels from Gothenburg to Stockholm and is Sweden’s construction of the millennium, connecting the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. After crossing Lake Vättern we reach Borenshult, an important section of the canal with five lock chambers and a height of almost sixteen metres to overcome. This lock brings the history of the Göta Canal back to life, deep down below Lake Boren, and the joining together of the great lakes, Vänern and Vättern. We arri...
