This list looks at big cities in Canada that are most accessible to new immigrants.
The richest city on this list, West Vancouver is a suburb of - you guessed it - Vancouver! It is surprisingly affordable for the renter: the average rent price in the city puts it right in the middle of the pack; it's actually cheaper to rent in West Van than in Milton! The unemployment is relatively low, well over a third of the population are immigrants, and it of course features the warmer temperatures that the Vancouver area is known for. So what could possibly be wrong? Well, on average it takes about 8 years to save up enough money to buy a house. So if you're thinking of starting out in West Vancouver, be sure to check out the rest of the list to find out where to move once you've made some money in Canada.
Looking for a job? The rapidly expanding city of Milton may be the place to move. Though it's a bit of a hike from Toronto - nearly an hour drive in traffic and significantly further by train - Milton boasts very low unemployment; the lowest among the immigrant-friendly big cities in the country. But Ottawa is notoriously boring and cold, so keep that in mind.

Mississauga, the third largest city in Canada's most pop0lous province, is still considered by many to be a suburb of Toronto. That's because it is only a 20 minute drive from the downtown and a short trip by transit. Mississauga boasts a population of over 50% immigrants and a low crime rate. But it's still somewhat of a bedroom community despite it's size - meaning you have to drive everywhere - and the employment rate doesn't compare favourably with the other suburbs of Toronto.
Markham is a suburb north of Toronto that is easily accessible from Toronto by transit or highway; it's right nextdoor to Richmond Hill. Markham has the second highest percentage of immigrants of any large city in Canada, with well over 50% of the population having been born overseas. The city boasts a high apartment vacancy rate and the rent is comparable to the other suburbs of Toronto. Markham is a pretty wealthy place too, meaning that it is a safe place to start your new life.

At Number 5. Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario
If you're fleeing the States to avoid the tidal wave of racial abuse, best avoid Canada’s hate crime capital, Kitchener-Waterloo. Verbal and physical attacks on minority ethnic, religious, and LGBT communities happen here on a higher per capita rate than anywhere else in the country.
Number 4. Miramichi, New Brunswick
The city of Miramichi however, banded together to craft a symbol of the town’s growing support for the LGBT community. Shortly afterwards, the stamps were defaced twice. What’s more, residents have responded with outright homophobia.
Number 3. Sarnia, Ontario
This might look like a boring little town, with a decent cost of living and good enough schools. That's if you ignore the fact that the view is densely populated with pollution-spewing factories. Also, ecumenic stagnation has caused Sarnia’s downtown area to become a ghost town.

The history of Toronto began in the late 18th century when the British Crown purchased its land from the Mississaugas of the New Credit. But Ottawa is notoriously boring and cold, so keep that in mind.
Richmond Hill, a suburb of Toronto easily accessible from the city by transit or highway, has one of the highest percentages of immigrants of any city in Canada - nearly equal that of the larger and perhaps more intimidating Mississauga. The only thing keeping it from being higher on this list is the violent crime rate which, while low, is significantly higher than the cities listed below. Well, that and the fact that it takes significantly longer to buy a house in Richmond Hill than it does in some other cities: the length of time to save for a house is not West Vancouver bad, but it's close.

So here are the Top 5 Canadian cities you’re going to want to avoid.
At Number 5. Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario
If you're fleeing the States to avoid the tidal wave of racial abuse, best avoid Canada’s hate crime capital, Kitchener-Waterloo. Verbal and physical attacks on minority ethnic, religious, and LGBT communities happen here on a higher per capita rate than anywhere else in the country.
Number 4. Miramichi, New Brunswick
The city of Miramichi however, banded together to craft a symbol of the town’s growing support for the LGBT community. Shortly afterwards, the stamps were defaced twice. What’s more, residents have responded with outright homophobia.
Number 3. Sarnia, Ontario
This might look like a boring little town, with a decent cost of living and good enough schools. That's if you ignore the fact that the view is densely populated with pollution-spewing factories. Also, ecumenic stagnation has caused Sarnia’s downtown area to become a ghost town.
Number 2. Saint John, New Brunswick
Saint John is very close to an idyllic little town of resplendent natural beauty named St. John’s. So unless you want to work in a paper mill or a nuclear power plant, you should definitely shoot for St. John’s NOT St. John.

It is surprisingly affordable for the renter: the average rent price in the city puts it right in the middle of the pack; it's actually cheaper to rent in West Van than in Milton! The unemployment is relatively low, well over a third of the population are immigrants, and it of course features the warmer temperatures that the Vancouver area is known for. So what could possibly be wrong? Well, on average it takes about 8 years to save up enough money to buy a house. So if you're thinking of starting out in West Vancouver, be sure to check out the rest of the list to find out where to move once you've made some money in Canada.
Looking for a job? The rapidly expanding city of Milton may be the place to move. Though it's a bit of a hike from Toronto - nearly an hour drive in traffic and significantly further by train - Milton boasts very low unemployment; the lowest among the immigrant-friendly big cities in the country. There aren't as many immigrants in Milton as there are in some of the other cities on this list, and the rent isn't exactly cheap, but it's hard to say no to jobs. Unless you're concerned about safety: Milton's crime-rate isn't exactly low.
The nation's capital is a safe bet. Predicted by experts to see a boom in jobs in the near future, the capital is also pretty much in the middle in all livability factors: the rent and vacancy rates are reasonable, unemployment is higher than some places but should soon drop, house prices are about average, as is the time it takes to save for a house, and the city is safe with decent transit. But Ottawa is notoriously boring and cold, so keep that in mind.
Richmond Hill, a suburb of Toronto easily accessible from the city by transit or highway, has one of the highest percentages of immigrants of any city in Canada - nearly equal that of the larger and perhaps more intimidating Mississauga. The only thing keeping it from being higher on this list is the violent crime rate which, while low, is significantly higher than the cities listed below. Well, that and the fact that it takes significantly longer to buy a house in Richmond Hill than it does in some other cities: the length of time to save for a house is not West Vancouver bad, but it's close.

The vacancy rate is reasonably high and the rent is way lower than any suburb of Toronto or Vancouver. Plus, it has a way lower crime rate than the equally cheap - and even more immigrant-friendly - Dollard-des-Ormeaux, another of suburb of Montreal, located almost as close to the downtown core. Sure, you have to cross the notoriously traffic-jammed Pont Champlain to get from Brossard to Montreal, but Dollard just isn't as safe. Finally, the average resident of Brossard only has to save for three years to afford a house, and Brossard has the second lowest real estate prices of any major city in Canada.
Mississauga, the third largest city in Canada's most pop0lous province, is still considered by many to be a suburb of Toronto. That's because it is only a 20 minute drive from the downtown and a short trip by transit. Mississauga boasts a population of over 50% immigrants and a low crime rate. But it's still somewhat of a bedroom community despite it's size - meaning you have to drive everywhere - and the employment rate doesn't compare favourably with the other suburbs of Toronto.
Markham is a suburb north of Toronto that is easily accessible from Toronto by transit or highway; it's right nextdoor to Richmond Hill. Markham has the second highest percentage of immigrants of any large city in Canada, with well over 50% of the population having been born overseas. The city boasts a high apartment vacancy rate and the rent is comparable to the other suburbs of Toronto. Markham is a pretty wealthy place too, meaning that it is a safe place to start your new life.

Canada is a North American country consisting of ten provinces and three territories. Located in the northern part of the continent, it extends from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west and northward into the Arctic Ocean. It is the world's second largest country by total area. Canada's common border with the United States to the south and northwest is the longest in the world.
Canada is a federal state that is governed as a parliamentary democracy and a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. It is a bilingual nation with both English and French as official languages at the federal level. One of the world's most highly developed countries, Canada has a diversified economy that is reliant upon its abundant natural resources and upon trade -- particularly with the United States, with which Canada has had a long and complex relationship. It is a member of the G7, G8, G20, NATO, OECD, WTO, Commonwealth of Nations, Francophonie, OAS, APEC, and UN. With the eighth-highest Human Development Index globally, it has one of the highest standards of living in the world.
Canada occupies a major northern portion of North America, sharing the land borders with the contiguous United States to the south and the US state of Alaska to the northwest, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west; to the north lies the Arctic Ocean. Canada is the second-largest country in the world, after Russia.
The population density, 3.3 inhabitants per square kilometre (8.5 /sq mi), is among the lowest in the world. The most densely populated part of the country is the Quebec City -- Windsor Corridor, situated in Southern Quebec and Southern Ontario along the Great Lakes and the Saint Lawrence River.
Average winter and summer high temperatures across Canada vary according to the location. Winters can be harsh in many regions of the country, particularly in the interior and Prairie provinces, which experience a continental climate, where daily average temperatures are near −15 °C (5 °F) but can drop below −40 °C (−40 °F) with severe wind chills. In noncoastal regions, snow can cover the ground almost six months of the year (more in the north). Coastal British Columbia has a temperate climate, with a mild and rainy winter. On the east and west coasts, average high temperatures are generally in the low 20s °C (70s °F), while between the coasts, the average summer high temperature ranges from 25 to 33 °C (77 to 89 °F), with occasional extreme heat in some interior locations well exceeding 40 °C (105 °F).
Canada has a total population of 34,682,937, an increase of 5.9 percent since 2001. Population in Canada increased from 1990 to 2008 with 5.8 million and 20.9% growth in population compared to 21.7% growth in the USA and 31.2% growth in Mexico. According to the OECD/World Bank population statistics between 1990--2008 the world population growth was 27 % and 1,423 million persons. Population growth is from immigration and, to a lesser extent, natural growth. About four-fifths of Canada's population lives within 150 kilometres (93 mi) of the United States border.
Canada has one of the highest per-capita immigration rates in the world, driven by economic policy and family reunification, and is aiming for between 240,000 and 265,000 new permanent residents in 2011, the same number of immigrants as in recent years. New immigrants settle mostly in major urban areas like Toronto and Vancouver. Canada also accepts large numbers of refugees. The country resettles over one in 10 of the world's refugees.
Canadian provinces and territories are responsible for education. Each system is similar, while reflecting regional history, culture and geography. The mandatory school age ranges between 5--7 to 16--18 years, contributing to an adult literacy rate of 99 percent. In 2002, 43 percent of Canadians aged 25 to 64 possessed a post-secondary education; for those aged 25 to 34, the rate of post-secondary education reached 51 percent.
Canada's two official languages are English and French. Official bilingualism is defined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Official Languages Act, and Official Language Regulations; it is applied by the Commissioner of Official Languages. English and French have equal status in federal courts, Parliament, and in all federal institutions. Citizens have the right, where there is sufficient demand, to receive federal government services in either English or French, and official-language minorities are guaranteed their own schools in all provinces and territories.

This might look like a boring little town, with a decent cost of living and good enough schools. That's if you ignore the fact that the view is densely populated with pollution-spewing factories. Also, ecumenic stagnation has caused Sarnia’s downtown area to become a ghost town.

Saint John is very close to an idyllic little town of resplendent natural beauty named St. John’s. So unless you want to work in a paper mill or a nuclear power plant, you should definitely shoot for St. John’s NOT St. John.

The original settlement, named Gastown, grew up on clearcuts on the west edge of the Hastings Mill logging sawmill's property, where a makeshift tavern had been set up on a plank between two stumps and the proprietor, Gassy Jack, persuaded the curious millworkers to build him a tavern, on 1 July 1867. From that first enterprise, other stores and some hotels quickly appeared along the waterfront to the west. Gastown became formally laid out as a registered townsite dubbed Granville, B.I. ("B.I" standing for "Burrard Inlet"). As part of the land and political deal whereby the area of the townsite was made the railhead of the CPR, it was renamed "Vancouver" and incorporated shortly thereafter as a city, in 1886. By 1887, the transcontinental railway was extended to the city to take advantage of its large natural seaport, which soon became a vital link in a trade route between the Orient, Eastern Canada, and Europe.[7][8] As of 2009, Port Metro Vancouver is the busiest and largest port in Canada, and the most diversified port in North America.[9] While forestry remains its largest industry, Vancouver is well known as an urban centre surrounded by nature, making tourism its second-largest industry.[10] Major film production studios in Vancouver and Burnaby have turned Greater Vancouver and nearby areas into one of the largest film production centres in North America,[11][12] earning it the film industry nickname, Hollywood North.[13][14][15]
Vancouver is consistently named as one of the top five worldwide cities for livability and quality of life,[16][17] and the Economist Intelligence Unit acknowledged it as the first city to rank among the top-ten of the world's most liveable cities[18] for five consecutive years.[19] Vancouver has hosted many international conferences and events, including the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, UN Habitat I, Expo 86, the World Police and Fire Games in 1989 and 2009; and the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics which were held in Vancouver and Whistler, a resort community 125 km (78 mi) north of the city.[20] In 2014, following thirty years in California, the annual TED conference made Vancouver its indefinite home. Several matches of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup were played in Vancouver, including the final at BC Place Stadium.[21]

The original settlement, named Gastown, grew up on clearcuts on the west edge of the Hastings Mill logging sawmill's property, where a makeshift tavern had been set up on a plank between two stumps and the proprietor, Gassy Jack, persuaded the curious millworkers to build him a tavern, on 1 July 1867. From that first enterprise, other stores and some hotels quickly appeared along the waterfront to the west. Gastown became formally laid out as a registered townsite dubbed Granville, B.I. ("B.I" standing for "Burrard Inlet"). As part of the land and political deal whereby the area of the townsite was made the railhead of the CPR, it was renamed "Vancouver" and incorporated shortly thereafter as a city, in 1886. By 1887, the transcontinental railway was extended to the city to take advantage of its large natural seaport, which soon became a vital link in a trade route between the Orient, Eastern Canada, and Europe.[7][8] As of 2009, Port Metro Vancouver is the busiest and largest port in Canada, and the most diversified port in North America.[9] While forestry remains its largest industry, Vancouver is well known as an urban centre surrounded by nature, making tourism its second-largest industry.[10] Major film production studios in Vancouver and Burnaby have turned Greater Vancouver and nearby areas into one of the largest film production centres in North America,[11][12] earning it the film industry nickname, Hollywood North.[13][14][15]
Vancouver is consistently named as one of the top five worldwide cities for livability and quality of life,[16][17] and the Economist Intelligence Unit acknowledged it as the first city to rank among the top-ten of the world's most liveable cities[18] for five consecutive years.[19] Vancouver has hosted many international conferences and events, including the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, UN Habitat I, Expo 86, the World Police and Fire Games in 1989 and 2009; and the 2010 Winter Olympics and 2010 Winter Paralympics which were held in Vancouver and Whistler, a resort community 125 km (78 mi) north of the city.[20] In 2014, following thirty years in California, the annual TED conference made Vancouver its indefinite home. Several matches of the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup were played in Vancouver, including the final at BC Place Stadium.[21]

When we first published The Top Worst Places to Move in Canada, it was not received so well. Probably because of the use of 'worst' in the title. So we decided to ask you. We conducted an internet poll, that most scientific of data collection methods. The poll included the 8 cities in our original list and 12 major cities throughout Canada. Here's how our users ranked the top 10:
7. TIE: MONTREAL, THETFORD MINES, SARNIA AND VANCOUVER - 5% OF VOTES
Thetford Mines and Sarnia both found themselves on our original list due to their reputations for being extremely polluted. There was considerable debate in the comments section of the article about whether or not Sarnia remains polluted. In 2013 a Canadian magazine ran a story claiming that Sarnia was the most polluted city in Canada.

"Sarnia has impressive social services available and is a common through-destination for people traveling to the States. Heck, the similar city of Windsor, Ontario has higher unemployment and is right across from Detroit... it has higher suicide rates, too. And it's only 2 hours away from Sarnia. Another great pick."

That oughta boost our horrible employment rate, best look for another job on the side.. (If you can even f*cking find one) Let's not forget our lovely waterfront Centennial Park, full of Asbestos. As a kid ya this city was great, Canatara Park was awesome, the Howard Watson Natural trail is great the Beach, is great. I loved the Animal Farm. But as far as employment goes, that's far from being revitalized, not everyone wants to be a Chemical Engineer, or a goddamn nurse. Or sharpen pencils all day in an office. Those are pretty much your only options here. Oh and such a shame about Montanas, AGAIN. You like many other Sarnians may already be retired, not young and looking to find their way. Sarnia is showing it's age, and it's not looking good so far. It's old, and tired like the many people who live here anyway. The only big success was Bayfest. But even that seems to have been taken away from us. Oh yes, and apparently blinkers are optional on cars in this city."

So, what’s it going to be Moose or Kangaroos? Hockey or Aussie Rules? This article will highlight the day to day living comparison between these two great countries.
Canada and Australia are two of the largest countries in the world, so if I were to do a comparison between every city and town in both countries you may be finished reading this article sometime next year. Instead I decided to pick the two main immigration/travel destinations, Toronto and Sydney.
