Japan (i/dʒəˈpæn/; Japanese: 日本 Nippon [nip̚põ̞ɴ] or Nihon [nihõ̞ɴ]; formally 日本国 Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku, "State of Japan") is an island country in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, China, North Korea, South Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea and Taiwan in the south. The kanji that make up Japan's name mean "sun origin", and Japan is often called the "Land of the Rising Sun".
Japan is a stratovolcanic archipelago of 6,852 islands. The four largest are Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which make up about ninety-seven percent of Japan's land area. Japan's population of 126 million is the world's tenth largest. Approximately 9.1 million people live in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, which is the sixth largest city proper in the OECD. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the world's largest metropolitan area with over 35 million residents and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy.

On the 10th March 2011, Australian Travellers Alex Wain, Dan Reyes and Jesse Perez went to Japan for the trip of a lifetime. The day after they landed, a 9.0 earthquake struck off the coast of Sendai, triggering a tsunami that would go on to leave over 20,000 people dead. Bewildered by the horrible scenes unfolding in front of them, and as piles of concerned messages from family and friends back home came in, they assessed their options in their current destinations of Osaka and Kyoto. But while the TV broadcasts were locked on 24 hours a day detailing the disaster, walking the streets would reveal a different side of Japan that wasn't shown on news services around the world. Alex, Dan and Jesse saw a resilient nation, obviously shaken by the disaster, but determined to not let it affec...

The slideshow is a compilation of different areas in Kyoto during the past Cherry blossom seasons. According to the current forecasts, the cherry blossoms are expected to open according to their average schedule or slightly delayed in 2012. The blossoms are forecast to start opening across wide areas of Kyushu, Shikoku and Honshu in late March and reach full bloom in early April. "Hanami" is the centuries-old practice of picnicking under a blooming sakura or ume tree. The custom is said to have started during the Nara Period (710–794) when it was ume blossoms that people admired in the beginning. But by the Heian Period (794–1185), cherry blossoms came to attract more attention and hanami was synonymous with sakura. From then on, in tanka and haiku, "Flowers" meant "sakura." The custom was...

Washoku, the traditional cuisine of Japan, was given world cultural heritage status by the United Nations on Wednesday. French cooking is the only other cuisine that had been distinguished as a national culinary tradition. The Japanese "washoku" embraces seasonal ingredients, a unique taste, time consuming preparation and a style of eating steeped in centuries of tradition. Japanese food focuses on the aesthetics of the meal, including fancy ceramic and lacquer-ware, and food textures and shapes, often placed in a decorative fashion, sometimes with inedible items, such as an autumn leaf, for effect. At its heart is the savoury, "umami", based on the flavour from dried bonito flakes and seaweed, Japan's equivalent of soup stock. It is recognised as a fundamental taste in Japanese cui...

In which John Green teaches you about what westerners call the middle ages and the lives of the aristocracy...in Japan. The Heian period in Japan lasted from 794CE to 1185CE, and it was an interesting time in Japan. Rather than being known for a thriving economy, or particularly interesting politics, the most important things to come out of the Heian period were largely cultural. There was a flourishing of art and literature in the period, and a lot of that culture was created by women. The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu was the classic piece of literature of the day, and it gave a detailed look into the way the Aristocrats of the Heian period lived. While this doesn't give a lot of insight into the lives of daily people, it can be very valuable, and the idea of approaching history from...

Exclusively for Sotheby’s Dutch designer Herman van Hulsteijn created a very special edition of 9 extraordinary Vanhulsteijn bicycles covered in a dazzling coat of Japanese urushi lacquer and gold leaf. The curve is the single most distinguishing feature of this bicycle, stretching from the saddle toward the handlebars in front and terminating at the rear wheel at the back. It appears as if the rider is floating in mid-air. This particular bike design grew out of Hermans need to create ‘a good looking cycle’: a head-turner that is designed for fast, comfortable rides. At first he build a prototype just to himself, but as soon as he started riding around the city everybody wanted one. After selling a first batch of bikes, printed press and bloggers also noticed the innovative look of the Va...

Examining themes of fashion and consumption, we will present durational performances and installation works in this former furniture store's windows. Questions regarding the relationship of art and commerce today are myriad, and while there are no simple answers, most observers agree that there are many troubling implications of the influences of speculation, branding and celebrity on the current climate. Giving away the aesthetic experience through such a temporary event is a return to earlier, more idealistic times, yet placing the work within a shopping district anchors it to the realistic present. We imagine this to be an exciting event which will attract art audiences, as well as provide an unusual experience to passers-by. Jordan Biren and Corrina Peipon present a tableau/performan...
The Japanese Embassy in Denmark celebrates the annual spring also known as Hanami at Langelinie in the capital. The Festival is a huge +3000 attendees event with focus on Japanese tradition, culture and martial arts. Hanami in Japan is to most japanese a tradition to spend time with the people you hold dear and at the same time get some nice food and drinks while watching the blossomed flowers of the japanese cherry trees. It is a wonderful sight when standing under the trees. The committee of Copenhagen Sakura Festival was established back in 2008, by the Japanese Embassy and fellow japanese-related cultural organizations. (Taken from the committee website) The original idea came from the noble deed of donation of 200 cherry blossom (Sakura) trees by Mr. Seiichi Takaki, President of A...

There is actually quite a bit more to it, and it's also easy to do! In this class, you will learn how to do it for real; you will learn about: • Ancient super Japa...
Dr. Yasushi Sakuramoto, Maxwell School EMPA candidate Japan has realized the world’s highest level of life expectancy and healthcare standards through the universal health insurance system. This system includes covering all citizens through public health insurance, freedom of choice of medical institution, and high-quality medical services with low costs. While the social insurance system is the basis, public subsidies are the resources used to maintain universal health insurance. With the aging population of Japan, however, challenges such as financial sustainability, geographical inequity, and skewed distribution of physician specialties are being presented. Japan’s experience can provide perspective to other countries’ health policy creation. Dr. Yasushi Sakuramoto is an EMPA candi...

Welcome to the View from Above! A series where we take you on a Journey to some of the most beautiful places on earth! Japan is the furthest point in what was called the ‘Far East’ by Imperial Europe, and is perhaps the most categorical in that respect. It may come as a culture-shock for some; the deep, in-grown, ancient traditions, taboos, customs and norms of the Japanese people. But those same customs and norms, so obsessed with perfection, are incredibly beautiful, complementing the natural beauty of the Japanese landscape. Travel with View from Above to Tokyo’s metropolitan skyline, Kyoto’s shrines and temples, Fuji’s iconic cliffs, and the elegant pagodas and toris of the Japanese countryside. Captured by DJI unmanned recreational drones, enjoy some unique and incredible shots of t...

This video is an homage to the beautiful and eccentric experience that is Japan for the uninitiated. As first time visitors we spent 13 days exploring Tokyo and Kyoto. Our visit was in March of 2016. We'd love to go back and explore more of Japan one day. Destinations (click on track times to skip ahead): Tokyo: ☞ Shibuya Crossing [@0:06] » Tokyo's famous intersection, said to be the busiest in the world. ☞ Uobei Sushi [@0:17] » An alternative style of conveyer belt sushi chain. ☞ Robot Restaurant [@0:40] » A highly recommended neon cabaret show mixing robots and dancers for a pleasant assault to the senses. ☞ Golden Gai [@1:02] » A culturally significant network of narrow streets and alleyways with 200 tiny shanty-style bars, some that only fit a few as five people at a time. ☞ Se...

An infographic movie for promoting Japan's features by the Government of Japan. This short film introduces a variety of viable solutions developed by Japan to address the socio-economic and environmental challenges faced in our rapidly changing world. It also showcases Japan's traditional and modern culture, its food and drink and its travel destinations, which continue to attract more and more tourists from all over the world. Six key themes, Green, Life, Safety, Development, Culture and Tourism are demonstrated through a mixture of animation, photos and movies with a cool but 'pop' background music that represents 'the past, present and future'. This film was first shown and applauded at `Japan Night' Sep. 11th 2012, a side event of the summer Davos conference.
This film was shot between June and September 2016, after the Kumamoto earthquake. Japan has a long history of Buddhism and religious Mythology, where many have derived from other Asian cultures. One popular belief is that there is a God in everything. Until the 20th century, Kyushu was seen as Japan's gate to the world and a centre for trade. It has historically been the first stop for foreign traders and travelers in Japan and a place from which the outside influences would spread to the rest of the country. Time has moved on, but the landscapes and legends remain to this day. The Kumamoto earthquake has caused serious damage to the region. Many people have suffered physical and mental injuries and tourism has fallen drastically. The aim of this film is to disseminate the new appeal of...

From temples and shrines, to gardens and museums, you'll never run out of attractions. Out of all the things you could do, I've chosen a top 25 list for this awesome city (and just so you know food is my first choice in Tokyo)! 1. http://www.expedia.com/Tokyo-and-vicinity.d179900.Destination-Travel-Guides Tokyo, the capital of Japan, is one of the most exciting megacities on the planet. The city is a spectacular matrix of villages, towns and cities, strung together by a super-efficient rail system. Tradition, ritual and respect are the hallmarks of Japanese society. This is a place that cherishes its children, reveres its elderly, and treats visitors like honored guests. Begin your Tokyo journey in the ancient town of Asakusa, home to the city’s oldest temple, Sensoji. Then head to the suburb of Harajuku, renowned as a center of youth culture and fashion and home to one of Tokyo’s largest green spaces, Yoyogi Park. Just to the north of Yoyogi Park, is Meiji Shrine, dedicated to the father of modern Japan, Empero...

In part two of my video travel guide to India I travel to Bodhgaya, one of the most sacred places in all of the Buddhist religion. It was at this location 2,500 years ago that a young Prince Siddhartha sat under a fig tree, meditated and found enlightenment, thus becoming the Buddha. I start off by visiting the many temples that have been built by various Buddhists from around the world, including temples dedicated to Buddhists living in China, Japan, Tibet and Nepal. I then visit the Tergar Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist complexes in the region, which is a short walk from the main road. I then head to the sacred Mahabodhi Temple complex in the center of town. At sunset it is a scenic, peaceful time to explore the grounds, which include a large monument built at the Bodhi Tree it...

The World Before Me is a modern-day round the world trip, set to the words of a 19th century poet. “Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road, healthy, free, the world before me.” 160 years have passed since Walt Whitman penned this text, but feelings about travel remain the same. We’re still inspired by the open road and still excited by discovering the unknown. In the fall of 2015, while preparing for a trip that would take me literally around the world, I couldn't shake the desire to share the experience of travel, which for me is a very personal one. This film is the culmination of that desire. I carried my camera for 5 months through 15 countries. The endless metropolis of Tokyo, tiny islands of The Philippines, busy streets of India, the Swiss Alps and the Scottish Highland...

Osaka's Gate Tower Building is an amazing sight to see because ... well, how should I put this? A highway goes through the building. It literally does, and there is a story behind it. In this episode, John not only goes inside to see where the elevator takes him, he also drives through it -- in a Lotus Seven. We'll also go up the Umeda Sky Building and catch some fantastic angles of the city, skyline and Gate Tower Building. THE STORY: Here it is from the building owner. It’s basically a land rights dispute with a sort of happy ending. The property was owned by a business (coal and wood company) since the early Meiji era but when business declined, so did the buildings in the 1970s. The area was approved to be redeveloped in 1983 but the property holder refused to give up the land, ...

http://edwin-europe.com/japan_film.html For 35 years, Edwin Japan have worked on improving efficiency, quality, construction and washing methods by studying and engineering machinery used in the denim manufacturing process. It is impossible to improve what one makes without spending the time everyday to master what one does, turning ones profession into a craft. The denim technicians at Edwin are true craftsmen, as their commitment and attention to the product is unquestionably what makes the Edwin product stand out from the mass of denim available within the market today. Whilst this remains ‘production’, the working philosophy remains closer to a greatly more efficient and productive Artisanal method. They are ‘engineers’. **To all those affected by the earthquake and tsunami. You are in our thoughts and prayers. We wish for the safety of you all.** Japan is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. This is my Japan. This is one of the many reasons why I love Japan. I shot this in many locations around Japan in the summer of 2009. Some of the location include Tokyo, Matsuyama, Imabari, Nagano, Gifu, and Ishizushisan. I started this as a personal project to try and capture the beauty that I see in Japan. It started as just that... But now that I have finished, I see it only as a beginning. This video, along with SAIJO MATSURI (www.vimeo.com/7458088) is just the start of a much larger project that I have now decided to do. Anyone interested in helping fund/produce this dream of mine please feel fr...

This is my final thesis project. I created info-graphic, motion piece. My objective is to make Japanese people to think about that everything happening here in Japan, isn't that normal. So I created this video from foreigner's point of view, rather than Japanese people's point of view. Both English and Japanese versions are available. By the way, please don't call me racist, because I am one of short, small eyes Japanese.
Don't tell me not to live Just sit and putter Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter Don't bring around a cloud 'round To rain on my parade
Don't tell me not to fly I've simply got to If someone takes a spill It's me not you Who told you you're allowed To rain on my parade
I'll march my band out And I'll beat my drum And if I'm spammed out Your turn at bat sir At least I didn't fake it Hat sir Nearly didn't make it
Maybe I'm just a rose of sheer perfection A freckle on the nose of life's complexion A cinder of a shiny apple of it's eye
I've gotta fly once I gotta try once Only can die once Right, sir? Love is juicy, juicy and I'll say I gotta have my bite, sir!
Well, look out love oh babe I'm coming Don't tell me not to march My heart's a drummer Who told you you're allowed To rain on my parade
I'm gonna live and live now Get what I want, I know how One roll for the whole shebang One throw that bell will go clang High on the target and wham One shot, one gunshot and bam!
Don't tell me not to live Just sit and putter Life's candy and the sun's a ball of butter Don't bring around a cloud To rain on my parade
