We continue shooting interesting places in Israel and this time we've flown over one the most attractive sites for tourists, an ancient port city in Israel, the oldest part of Tel Aviv-Yafo, the old city of Jaffa. According to one of the myths the city was named after Noah's son, named Japheth. Some people believe it comes from the Hebrew word "Yofi" - beauty. Jaffa Lighthouse located in the old port is one of the tourist attractions. Visitors can take a pleasant walk around the city, enjoying its narrow alleys named after the signs of the Zodiac. There are art galleries and studios, jewelry shops, cafes and restaurants, museums, mosques and churches. The church you can see in our film is called St. Peter's Church, a Franciscan Roman-Catholic one, built on the remains of a Crusaders fortress. You can also enjoy the view of Tel Aviv Promenade and modern buildings of Tel Aviv at the background.

Jaffa
Jaffa (Hebrew: יָפוֹ, 
Yāfō ; Arabic: يَافَا), also called Japho or Joppa, is the southern, oldest part of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, an ancient port city in Israel. Jaffa is famous for its association with the biblical stories of Jonah, Solomon, and Saint Peter as well as the mythological story of Andromeda and Perseus.
Etymology
The town was mentioned in Egyptian sources and the Amarna letters as Yapu. Mythology says that it is named for Japheth, one of the sons of Noah, the one who built it after the Great Flood. The Hellenist tradition links the name to Iopeia, or Cassiopeia, mother of Andromeda. An outcropping of rocks near the harbor is reputed to have been the place where Andromeda was rescued by Perseus. Pliny the Elder associated the name with Jopa, the daughter of Aeolus, the god of the wind. The Arab geographer Al-Muqaddasi referred to it as Yaffa.
History
Early antiquity
Tel Yafo (Jaffa Hill) rises to a height of 40 meters (130 feet) with a broad view of the coastline. Hence it had a strategic importance in military history. The accumulation of debris and landfill over the centuries made the hill even higher. Archaeological evidence shows that Jaffa was inhabited roughly 7,500 years BCE.

Old City (Jaffa)
The Old City of Jaffa is an area in Jaffa in Israel. It is located in the southern part of the Tel Aviv – Jaffa municipality.
Jaffa is a walled city; the main entrance is the Jaffa Gate, Bab el-Halil or Hebron Gate, built by Suleiman the Magnificent in 1538.

Tel Aviv
Tel Aviv-Yafo (Hebrew: תל אביב-יפו pronounced [ˈtel ˈaviv ˈjafo], Arabic: تل أبيب يافا) or Tel Aviv (Hebrew: תל אביב pronounced [ˈtel ˈaviv], Arabic: تل أبيب) is a city in Israel, and the second most populous city administered by that country's government after Jerusalem. Situated on the Mediterranean coastline in central-west Israel, Tel Aviv has a population of 426,138. The greater Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area, also known as Gush Dan, constitutes Israel's largest conurbation with 3,713,200 residents, 42% of the country's population. Tel Aviv is governed by the Tel Aviv-Yafo municipality, headed by Ron Huldai, and is home to many foreign embassies.
Tel Aviv was founded in 1909 by Jewish immigrants on the outskirts of the ancient port city of Jaffa (Hebrew: יפו Yafo). Immigration by mostly Jewish refugees meant that the growth of Tel Aviv soon outpaced Jaffa's, which had a majority Arab population at the time. Tel Aviv and Jaffa were merged into a single municipality in 1950, two years after the establishment of the State of Israel. Tel Aviv's White City, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003, comprises the world's largest concentration of Bauhaus buildings.

"Visitors to Jerusalem’s Old City can now explore remains of King Herod’s palace, which may be where Roman governor Pontius Pilate tried and condemned Jesus of Nazareth to death. Excavating from 1999–2000 underneath an abandoned Ottoman-period prison known as the Kishle—which is part of the so-called Tower of David complex—Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologist Amit Re’em uncovered the foundation walls and sewage system of Herod’s Jerusalem palace. Tours offered through the Tower of David Museum will showcase these finds.
Although the discovery of the remains of Herod’s Jerusalem palace has recently made headlines, the finds are not surprising, according to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill archaeologist Jodi Magness.
“We have other remains of the substructure of Herod’s palace, and its identification as the praetorium [the Roman governor’s residence and headquarters] is not new, either,” Magness told Bible History Daily.

"At the western edge of the Old City, near the Jaffa Gate, the Tower of David stands above the walls.
In 1999, archaeologists found a building while working on the Tower of David Museum. It turned out to be the site of King Herod's Palace. Records on its walls go back to the First Temple period, even before the time of Jesus and the Roman governor who sentenced him to the cross: Pontius Pilate.

"Visitors to Jerusalem’s Old City can now explore remains of King Herod’s palace, which may be where Roman governor Pontius Pilate tried and condemned Jesus of Nazareth to death. Excavating from 1999–2000 underneath an abandoned Ottoman-period prison known as the Kishle—which is part of the so-called Tower of David complex—Israel Antiquities Authority archaeologist Amit Re’em uncovered the foundation walls and sewage system of Herod’s Jerusalem palace. Tours offered through the Tower of David Museum will showcase these finds.
Although the discovery of the remains of Herod’s Jerusalem palace has recently made headlines, the finds are not surprising, according to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill archaeologist Jodi Magness.
“We have other remains of the substructure of Herod’s palace, and its identification as the praetorium [the Roman governor’s residence and headquarters] is not new, either,” Magness told Bible History Daily.

"At the western edge of the Old City, near the Jaffa Gate, the Tower of David stands above the walls.

Ride4MedicalAid is a sponsored cycle ride from London to Jerusalem to raise awareness and funds for Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP).
The ride, started on the 27 August 2016, crossing 13 countries, covering a distance of 3,500km in less than 35 days, & arriving at Jaffa Gate in the Old City of Jerusalem on the 30 September 2016.
MAP is a humanitarian organisation working for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees. MAP provides lifesaving medical supplies, equipment, training and humanitarian aid to those most in need in Gaza, the West Bank and in Lebanon.

Growing up in Norwich and having a very normal upbringing
Setting her history and learning more about her family Being brought up with Islam
In 2014 during the war in Gaza, she was sitting on her sofa watching the news and finally decided it was time for her to do something to raise awareness about the situation in Palestine/Israel.
Not doing anything for a year and not knowing how to start
In May 2015 visiting Shatila camp in Beirut where she learnt more about MAP and how it was founded following the massacres in Shatila and Sabra camps in 1982.

This Power Point video is one segment of a 15 part series on the physical settings of Jerusalem. I begin at Jaffa Gate and proceed counterclockwise around the ancient city including some of the most significant historical, geographical, archaeological, and spiritually important sites in the old city with an emphasis on the Christian Bible.
This is a comparison and contrast presentation utilizing the scale model of the first century city of Jerusalem found at the Holy Land Hotel in Jerusalem.
Jerusalem is a complex physical site. There are many layers of archaeology, history, religions, peoples and cultures. Even if you have a rich background in biblical knowledge, the separate sites that you visit are difficult to put into context. Most pilgrims take a whirlwind tour or the city leaving you almost more confused than before you visited. This presentation is excellent for connecting some of the physical locations with the biblical events and locations that are confusing when you visit the old city of Jerusalem.
In my Masters program I studied historical geography and archaeology of the Middle East while living at my university which was situated on Mt. Zion. Even after six months of graduate level studies I would have found this presentation indispensable in connecting the dots. This is why I created it. I would recommend that you watch it prior to going to Jerusalem and even after you visit.
