Death at Rio Tinto mine site in the Pilbara

A person has died at Rio Tinto's Yandicoogina mine site in the Pilbara on Tuesday. 

The incident was reported to police around midday, with investigators on their way to the scene - 100 kilometres north of Newman. 

Fairfax Media understands the worker died as a result of an explosion. 

Police said they believe the deceased is a man aged in his early 50s. 

Emergency services will not be releasing any further details until the person's next of kin have been notified. 

Rio Tinto confirmed the site has been shut down following the incident.

In a statement a company spokesman said: "An employee at Rio Tinto's Yandicoogina iron ore mine passed away this morning following a serious incident on site.

"Emergency services are on scene. Rio Tinto has advised the relevant authorities and will assist their investigations.
 
"The company will provide all the necessary support for the employee's family and colleagues during this difficult time."

It's the first death at a WA mine site in a year.
