RESIDENCE December 2, 2014 By: Gina Browning, SPCA Director of Public Relations SPCA Serving Erie County/New York State Peace Officer Jessica Coughlin has charged Ronald and Shelly Breier, of Milford Avenue in Buffalo, with one count each of animal cruelty. Early yesterday morning Coughlin responded to a call from Buffalo Police, on the scene at the Milford Avenue residence. While police officers were responding to an unrelated call there, they were told a "dead dog" was in the basement, and contacted the SPCA Serving Erie County. Upon arriving at the residence, Coughlin took to the basement and saw something she couldn't identify blocked off in a corner of the basement. "I didn't know what I was looking at," says Coughlin. "I thought it was simply a ball of fur. There was no movement. I couldn't tell if it was an animal, and if so, what kind of animal it was. I couldn't tell one end from the other, couldn't tell if whatever the animal was was alive or dead." Upon determining that the ball of fur was, in fact, a severely-matted dog unable to move but still breathing, Coughlin rushed her to the SPCA's 205 Ensminger Road, Tonawanda shelter, where she was admitted at 1:40 am December 1. They were met there by SPCA Veterinary Technician Lisa Laufer, who performed as much of an examination as possible through the pounds of mats. She was unable to get a temperature on the dog, but did hear a heartbeat. The dog, now named Dori, weighed 11 pounds at the time of admission. She was also given pain medication, and rested as much as possible the rest of the night. At 2:00 pm yesterday in the SPCA's onsite infirmary, Dori was sedated and her mats were carefully shaved (see video here; scroll for additional photos). She also received a preliminary examination by the SPCA's Dr. Lisa Kerwin. According to SPCA Veterinarian Dr. Helene Chevalier, twine was found embedded into Dori's left hind paw; the twine had worked itself through the soft tissue and was starting to work its way into the bone. The twine was starting to crush Dori's toes, breaking one of them. Dori was underweight, and also suffers from ear infections and damaged eyes. Once shaved, Dori weighed in at 7 pounds; 34% of Dori's admission weight included four pounds of mats. Dori was surrendered to the SPCA by her owners and at this time remains in the care of the SPCA's veterinary team.
