Every day people all around the world go through their daily routines without encountering many problems. North Korea’s hair-brained leader, Kim Jong-Un, brought in one of the strangest laws ever. He decreed that there are only 28 government approved hair styles that men and women can get.
To be specific, there are 10 for men and 18 for women. Strangely though, the lardy leader’s own unique slicked back style isn’t on the list, which just seems unfair.
Spiked hair is explicitly banned, presumably because it’s rebellious, or maybe hair wax is just rare in the despotic North.According to North Korean defectors, Kim Jong-Un likes to blur the lines between fiction and reality, implementing some strange Sci-Fi vetting process for the capital city.
Basically, if you want to live in Pyongyang and don’t have express permission from the government, then you’re out of luck.
The city is apparently reserved for the most successful, and more importantly loyal, people. Which isn’t surprising when you consider housing assignments are decided by the government.
It’s kind of like The Capital in the Hunger Games but without the bloodsport… we hope.Somewhat shockingly, elections are held every five years in North Korea – it is the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea after all.

listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hancha: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; MR: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.

Korea, called Chosŏn (Korean: 조선; Hanja: 朝鮮) in North Korea and Hanguk (Korean: 한국; Hanja: 韓國) or Daehanminkuk (Korean: 대한민국; Hanja: 大韓民國) in South Korea, is an East Asian territory that is divided into two distinct sovereign states: North Korea, formally the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea (ROK). Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. It is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan .
Korea emerged as a singular political entity after centuries of conflict among the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which were unified as Silla (57 BC – AD 935) and Balhae (AD 698 – 926). The united Silla was eventually succeeded by Goryeo in 935 at the end of the Later Three Kingdoms period. Goryeo, which gave name to the modern exonym "Korea", was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century. The invasions by the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation, which forced it into vassalage. After the Yuan dynasty's collapse, severe political strife followed. Goryeo eventually fell to an uprising led by General Yi Seong-gye, who established Joseon in 1388.

North is a noun, adjective, or adverb indicating direction or geography. North is one of the four cardinal directions or compass points. It is the opposite of south and is perpendicular to east and west.
Etymology
The word north is related to the Old High German nord, both descending from the Proto-Indo-European unit ner-, meaning "down" (or "under"). (Presumably a natural primitive description of its concept is "to the left of the rising sun".)
The Latin word borealis comes from the Greek boreas "north wind, north", which, according to Ovid, was personified as the son of the river-god Strymon, the father of Calais and Zetes. Septentrionalis is from septentriones, "the seven plow oxen", a name of Ursa Maior. The Greek arktikos is named for the same constellation, and is the derivation of the English word "Arctic".
Other languages have sometimes more interesting derivations. For example, in Lezgian, kefer can mean both 'disbelief' and 'north', since to the north of the Muslim Lezgian homeland there are areas formerly inhabited by non-Muslim Caucasian and Turkic peoples. In many languages of Mesoamerica, "north" also means "up". In Hungarian the word for north is észak, which is derived from éjszaka ("night"), since above the Tropic of Cancer, the Sun never shines from the north.

North Korea’s hair-brained leader, Kim Jong-Un, brought in one of the strangest laws ever. He decreed that there are only 28 government approved hair styles that men and women can get. To be specific, there are 10 for men and 18 for women. Strangely though, the lardy leader’s own unique slicked back style isn’t on the list, which just seems unfair. A Month Around China
This video is made up from almost 3000 photos taken over four weeks of travelling around China and Hong Kong. We spent five days in Beijing, prior to our trip in North Korea, seeing celebrations for Golden Week - China National Day in Tiananmen Square and the Summer Palace. We joined the Dragon Trip, after returning from North Korea, for an 18 day tour around China beginning in Yangshuo. Yangshuo (in Guilin) is famous for its Karst mountain range spread across its farmland. Here we saw a rural side of China; seeing the scenic view from 20 Yuan note, visiting a Dragon Trip's tour guide's family farm, have a cooking class, cycle through the mountains and farmland, float down the Yulong River on a bamboo raft and see the traditional Cormorant bird Fishing. But at a time when the secretive state was still welcoming tourists, former aid worker Andrew Macleod made the journey to the repressive nation. I've always been very interested in North Korea because it seemed to be one of the most unique and mysterious countries in the whole world. This is my day to day life throughout the 7 days that I spent in North Korea. You can never be sure whether things were staged or not in North Korea because you are only shown what they want you to see. You can't choose where or when you will be going to specific places, they simply tell you to hop on a bus and ask you to get off at one point or another.
That is why I didn't want to offer my opinion about whether things were staged or not, whether they were good or not, or honest or not. My goal was to show you what my day to day life looked like when I was there and let you make up your own mind and judge for yourself.
Do not judge North Korea only from what you see in this video. This is what they showed us and there's a reason they show some things and not show the others. Also, knowing how much control they exercise over the population, everything could have been staged only for us.

The ground started to shake and ripple under your feet as the tanks started to roll by,the street filled with thick clouds of diesel fumes.Alongside the thunderous noise you could still here the cheering. large groups of school children were trying to out sing or out screen each other, parents, grandparents waving plastic flowers some resembling mechanical toys,they lined the streets for as far as you could see.The tanks were followed by missile launchers,rockets, artillary canons and finally a never ending convoy of open top trucks filled with cheering soldiers.the whole parade had been delayed for hours due to a few clouds in the sky so by the time it had passed by it was completly dark.Finally as the convoy started to thin out the heavens opened up.the wind picked up and it poured down.For a while everyone remained in place and kept cheering what was left of the Korean Peoples Army and then like a giant herd of startled wilderbeast everyone was on the move.I took refuge in the middle of a brass band who had held their ground.The police were still frantically blowing their whistles trying to keep some order,in this chaos the brass band were still playing.I looked around it looked like a scene from Titanic.
At some point I felt a hand on my shoulder,It was a very relieved Mr Pak my Korean guide,he told me the whole group had been waiting on the bus for over an hour to leave.Too bad I thought knowing to well that going to A mass parade is the only opportunity your ever get as a tourist to wander around freely on your own in the highly controlled state of The Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea
When travelling around North Korea the two english words you will probrually hear more than any other will be No Photo.The general rules layed down by the korean guides are not to take photos of people in military uniform,construction sights or images of what they percieve to be of poverty.This makes filming In the country pretty challenging,images of what many westerners including myself see as being oldschool,rectro rustic and unspoilt completly confuse the koreans who would much rather you took images of the statues of their dear leaders,monuments and newly constructed appartment blocks.
Ive always just used a DSLR to shoot video in NK,it seems to draw less attention.
Beyond all the propaganda, and facades you encounter in North korea.The natural wonders that the country holds are undeniably beautifull and as for the people,everything they do is done with so much dedication,dertimination, and a togetherness that ive never encounterd before.

50th Anniv 1963 1st time this speech was held 'Let us Inherit the Historical Heart of God' Father before crea the univ he had an Ideal ShimJung & in order to realize it acted upon it .. new heaven and earth upon this land ... on that foundation F erected & started His Blessing from there ... which included Fs Entire SJ and realized it would have been the world of full rea of SJ ... F wanted to crea His base /found of Family which is basis for human welfare ... but because of fall , our painful days started and have lost value ... This video is made up from almost 3000 photos taken over four weeks of travelling around China and Hong Kong.
We spent five days in Beijing, prior to our trip in North Korea, seeing celebrations for Golden Week - China National Day in Tiananmen Square and the Summer Palace.
We joined the Dragon Trip, after returning from North Korea, for an 18 day tour around China beginning in Yangshuo. Yangshuo (in Guilin) is famous for its Karst mountain range spread across its farmland. Here we saw a rural side of China; seeing the scenic view from 20 Yuan note, visiting a Dragon Trip's tour guide's family farm, have a cooking class, cycle through the mountains and farmland, float down the Yulong River on a bamboo raft and see the traditional Cormorant bird Fishing.
After Yangshuo we travelled to Chengdu; the heart of the West of China. We visited the largest building in the world the Global Center and saw pandas at the worlds biggest, Giant Panda Breeding & Research Center.
We then explored Xi'An seeing the Terracotta Warriors and cycling around the Ming Dynasty City Walls. After Xi'An we visited Dengfeng home of the Shaolin Monks and had a Kungfu lesson at a Children’s Home run by the Shaolin Temple.
Next we returned to Beijing seeing the Olympic Bird’s Nest stadium, hiked an unrestored section of the Great Wall and visited the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven.
From Beijing we travelled to Moganshan to hike to Moganshan Peak, see Chairman Mao’s previous summer residence and swim in a lagoon.
At the end of the Dragon Trip, we spent a week in Shanghai over Halloween. From Shanghai we flew to Hong Kong and while there took a ferry over to Macau.

A tourist bus starts from Seoul and stops at an observatory near the Freedom Bridge where tourists can peer into the North. A tour guide provides the South Korean perspective on North Korea explaining i.e. the lack of trees in the North and the small size of North Korean Soldiers. The travel terminates in Panmunjeom within the JSA where guards and tourists stare at each other from both sides. The regulations allow tourists to carry nothing else than their cameras, the suitable equipment to be utilized in this "War Of Eyes" where filming and photographing is explicitely allowed.
The final highlight of the trip is a visit to the souvenir shop in the Demilitarized Zone where one can buy i.e. miniature dolls of soldiers, ginseng and uniforms.

It’s hard to overestimate the Commander-in-chief’s role in the country: his likeness adorns the streets and squares in every city and village. Through official portraits and statues, he is, literally, everywhere and kindergarten children are taught to sing his praises. Locals adore Kim Jong-un and consider him the Father of the Nation, he encourages everyone to be patriotic and surpass all other nations.
Almost 15% of North Korea’s GDP is reserved for military spending, and long after the Korean War of the 1950s, the country has still not signed a peace treaty with its capitalist southern neighbor. As a result, thousands of families were torn apart by the political divide. The army remains a source of inspiration; it determinates the social structure and stimulates ordinary people to devote their lives to work in the faithful service of the Marshal. The people believe that this military ideology consolidates national spirit and guarantees stability and order.
However, not even tough military methods and an ideological barrier around the country can solve the economic lag or the enormous social and economic gulf between South and North Korea. Self-reliance and self-sufficiency are in stark contrast to the economic reality. Despite developments in labour cooperation, a demilitarized zone, demarcated by a huge wall between the two states, is still amongst the most heavily armed areas in the world.
President of the Korean Friendship Association, Alejandro Cao de Benos explains that due to the generally accepted ideology of the Workers’ Party of Korea, the people will never understand nor accept a western mind-set. From childhood, they are taught to be loyal to their leader and to beware of western values.
For most viewers North Korea remains a mystery but this unique film offers a limited window of opportunity to view Korean lifestyle through the prism of North Korean peoples’ every day cares and joys. RT Doc meets ordinary workers and soldiers to hear first hand, how they lived before being isolated from the whole world.

Conflicts in both these countries show the real limits of international law when there are powerful neighbours and geo-political interests to worry about. Both conflicts show how easy it is without international legal intervention for such conflicts to stay little known. In this lecture the history of these conflicts, and the atrocities known to have been committed in each, will be summarised and set beside legal actions that have been attempted but that failed.

Every year, a mere few thousand international tourists are allowed a glimpse inside North Korea, the world’s most isolated country. RTD visits the land of the “Great Marshall”, Kim Jong-un, as the nation celebrates the birthdays of his two predecessors, supreme leaders, Kim Jong-il and Kim Il-sung.
Festivities in honour of the late leaders are very important here because every North Korean child knows that the country owes its independence, self-professed prosperity and military might to the Kim dynasty’s wisdom and selfless rule. “Truths” like that are taught from a very early age, along with patriotic songs and how to march. The personality cult is ingrained in every citizen from kindergarten where children live for six days a week while their parents set work records for the glory of their motherland and of course, for the “Great Marshal” himself. Readiness to give their lives in defence of the country against enemies, South Korea and the US being prime suspects, is also cultivated and encouraged from childhood.
Locals take pride in their socialist regime’s achievements, such as free medicine and the absence of homeless children on the streets. RTD spoke to several orphans; each one testified that the “Great Marshals” have cared for them like good parents. Statues of the three successive Kim dynasty leaders, dominate town squares throughout the country and grateful citizens bow and lay flowers before them. It is considered a very special honour to meet the “Great Marshal” in person, or even to see him up close. People cherish the memory of such good fortune for the rest of their lives. Any house or educational facility visited by the Marshal puts up a memorial plaque to celebrate and remember the great day.
North Koreans seem on the whole to be unanimous in appreciating their country, its leaders and their way of life. Access to the Internet or any foreign media that might offer an alternative view is banned here and penalties for bypassing that ban are severe. North Korea’s authorities take pains to control what the people are allowed to see and read.
An RTD film crew, along with around 200 international journalists, is invited to attend the late supreme leaders’ birthday celebrations. The occasion is marked with a military parade, the country’s biggest display of fire power for several years. Some of the latest weaponry was on show for the very first time, both locals and foreign visitors are impressed, but for very different reasons.

South Korea maintains a cowardly and disturbing indifference to the large scale atrocities occurring in North Korea. In the 68 years since the division of the Korean Peninsula, South Korweakens have lost their sense of unity and urgency.
S. Korea has many options if it wanted the Northern regime to collapse. South Korea has the world's 11th strongest military, 50 times the GDP of North Korea, and generations more advanced weaponry. It's their moral responsibility and greater national interest to reunify the Korean peninsula. The problem will not go away by ignoring it. Every year South Korea continues to appease the North, the reunification costs increases and the nightmare of the enslaved North Korean people continues.
Yet, this is all great news for tourists wanting to see a Stalinist/Maoist country in the 21st century. If you want to help North Korean civilians, I recommend visiting HRNK (The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea) and the UK Manna Mission of Europe (which operates bakeries to feed NK children).
