Al Jolson (born Asa Yoelson; May 26, 1886 – October 23, 1950) was a Jewish-American singer, film actor, and comedian. At the peak of his career, he was dubbed "The World's Greatest Entertainer."
His performing style was brash and extroverted, and he popularized a large number of songs that benefited from his "shamelessly sentimental, melodramatic approach". Numerous well-known singers were influenced by his music, including Bing Crosby,David Bowie,Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart and others. Dylan once referred to him as "somebody whose life I can feel". Broadway critic Gilbert Seldes compared him to the Greek god Pan, claiming that Jolson represented "the concentration of our national health and gaiety."
In the 1930s he was America's most famous and highest-paid entertainer. Between 1911 and 1928, Jolson had nine sell-out Winter Garden shows in a row, more than 80 hit records, and 16 national and international tours. Although he is best remembered today as the star of the first 'talking picture', The Jazz Singer (1927), he later starred in a series of successful musical films throughout the 1930s. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was the first star to entertain troops overseas during World War II. After a period of inactivity, his stardom returned with The Jolson Story (1946), for which Larry Parks played Jolson, with the singer dubbing for Parks. The formula was repeated in a sequel, Jolson Sings Again (1949).

His performing style was brash and extroverted, and he popularized a large number of songs that benefited from his "shamelessly sentimental, melodramatic approach". Numerous well-known singers were influenced by his music, including Bing Crosby, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart and others. Dylan once referred to him as "somebody whose life I can feel". Wait... May Flower... pfft, haha! Was, was that ship name in the game also a cleverly concealed pun, WA5 dev team?! Hehe, I wonder! Well, either way, I'm your uncharacteristically chipper host, Alkahest; glad you could join us for the extended musical fun.
Wild Arms 5 begins on the wasteland planet of Filgaia, as has always been the case before. Unlike past entries to the series, however, an inscrutable and advanced race from the Sea of Stars have already conquered mankind. Ruling over humanity with technology and cruelty, the dividing wall between native Humans and alien Veruni seems an impossible one to ever be broken down, or climbed. Our story begins when Dean Stark, an avid fan of mechanical giants called 'Golems', and his childhood friend Rebecca Streisand, meet a mysterious amnesiac whose name turns out to be Avril Vent Fleur... it's a name worth remembering!
Composed by Noriyasu Agematsu, 'April Showers' is an ending cutscene theme, the very nature of which is... profoundly spoilerish. A variation of the Ice Queen theme heard in the game -- the fifth, technically, though its ending cutscene nature means I consider it something of a standalone piece -- it could well be the most melancholy and heart-wrenching version as well; what begins as a somber, poignant piano melody, slowly begins to fade out... then unexpectedly shifts gears into a frenzy of fast-paced, intensely sorrowful violin notes that capture well the hopelessness and despair of a character who, time and again, makes a painful decision. It all serves to punctuate the tragic nature of the scene, and of the choice being made.
Now I should point out that this theme does not loop naturally. I went for a custom approach to create this extension, and really hope it'll meet with your approval; this theme was just too beautiful, too exquisite, to leave un-extended.
Ahhh, well... only one extension remains for today's AET2k broadcast. Coming up next, it's the very last track from Wind of the Nostalgeo / Nostalgia (DS). I hope you'll enjoy. Farewell, until we meet again... *salute* Take very good care, and may God bless.
