The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), subtitled "The Life and Death of a Man of Character", is a novel by British author Thomas Hardy. It is set in the fictional town of Casterbridge (based on the town of Dorchester in Dorset). The book is one of Hardy's Wessex novels, all set in a fictional rural England.
Hardy began writing the book in 1884 and wrote the last page on 17 April 1885. Within the book, he writes that the events took place "before the nineteenth century had reached one-third of its span". Literary critic Dale Kramer sees it as being set somewhat later—in the late 1840s, corresponding to Hardy's youth in Dorchester.
At a country fair near Casterbridge, Wessex, a young hay-trusser named Michael Henchard gets drunk on rum-laced furmity and quarrels with his wife, Susan. He decides to auction off his wife and baby daughter, Elizabeth-Jane, to a sailor, Mr. Newson, for five guineas. Sober the next day, he is too late to recover his family. When he realises that his wife and daughter are gone, he swears not to touch liquor again for as many years as he has lived so far (21).
The Following is an American television drama series created by Kevin Williamson, and jointly produced by Outerbanks Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television.
The first season follows former FBI agent Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) trying to help recapture serial killer Joe Carroll, while Carroll's assembled cult captures Carroll's son from his ex-wife and sends Carroll's messages to the world. The second season introduces Hardy's niece, who provides help in finding Carroll after his fake death while also dealing with a new cult.
The series is broadcast on the commercial broadcast television network Fox. In its first two seasons, it starred Kevin Bacon and James Purefoy in leading roles, as well as Shawn Ashmore, Natalie Zea, and Valorie Curry. The first season, comprising 15 episodes, premiered on January 21, 2013 and concluded on April 29, 2013. On March 4, 2013, the series was renewed for a second season, which premiered on January 19, 2014 and concluded on April 28, 2014. The series' renewal for a third season was announced on March 7, 2014, and the season premiered on March 2, 2015. On May 8, 2015, Fox canceled The Following after three seasons. The final episode aired on May 18, 2015.
Thomas Hardy, OM (2 June 1840 – 11 January 1928) was an English novelist and poet. A Victorian realist in the tradition of George Eliot, he was influenced both in his novels and in his poetry by Romanticism, especially William Wordsworth.Charles Dickens was another important influence. Like Dickens, he was highly critical of much in Victorian society, though Hardy focused more on a declining rural society.
While Hardy wrote poetry throughout his life and regarded himself primarily as a poet, his first collection was not published until 1898. Initially, therefore, he gained fame as the author of novels, including Far from the Madding Crowd (1874), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the d'Urbervilles (1891), and Jude the Obscure (1895). Hardy's poetry, though prolific, was not as well received during his lifetime. It was rediscovered in the 1950s, when Hardy's poetry had a significant influence on the Movement poets of the 1950s and 1960s, including Philip Larkin.
Most of his fictional works – initially published as serials in magazines – were set in the semi-fictional region of Wessex. They explored tragic characters struggling against their passions and social circumstances. Hardy's Wessex is based on the medieval Anglo-Saxon kingdom and eventually came to include the counties of Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset, Devon, Hampshire and much of Berkshire, in southwest and south central England.
Sir William Wallace (Gaelic: Uilleam Uallas; Norman French: William le Waleys; died 23 August 1305) was a Scottish knight who became one of the main leaders during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
Along with Andrew Moray, Wallace defeated an English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in September 1297. He was appointed Guardian of Scotland and served until his defeat at the Battle of Falkirk in July 1298. In August 1305, Wallace was captured in Robroyston, near Glasgow, and handed over to King Edward I of England, who had him hanged, drawn, and quartered for high treason and crimes against English civilians.
Since his death, Wallace has obtained an iconic status far beyond his homeland. He is the protagonist of Blind Harry's 15th-century epic poem The Wallace and the subject of literary works by Sir Walter Scott and Jane Porter, and of the Academy Award-winning film Braveheart (1995).

http://joolzguides.com In this London Guide Joolz Guides goes to Smithfield Market where William Wallace was executed and wife selling used to happen! Smithfield wife selling wasn't strictly legal but it was quite a common practice. In Thomas Hardy's The Mayor of Casterbridge the protagonist sells his wife at the beginning of the book. William Wallace was dragged here from London Bridge before being hung drawn and quartered and it's also the famous venue of the peasant's revolt, where Watt Tyler was famously killed. James Purefoy drops some hints about the future of his character, Joe Carroll, in season 2 of "The Following."
Oh, it's scrambled eggs what he says.
He accuses me of treachery.
Got the nine lies, got the wide eyes,
Got a failing grade in Chemistry.
If you count back to the balcony
When all we saw was the mystery.
Of a blonde haired boy brought his mother joy,
With his pedigree and family tree.
Oh, lay it all out on a wicker couch,
That you wove in a loony bin.
Cut it out, it's a second round bout.
Not the way of a gentleman.
Give it up, get a job,
Take a pill and leave me be.
He's got a synapse lapse he don't think he has,
But it's been proven empirically.
If they take something precious from me,
I'm gonna take something precious from them.
Oh now he's losing his constituency.
We thought, "Oh, this could never happen again."
If I take something precious from him,
He try to take something precious from me.
There's a battle in his head that he cannot win.
There's a man he could never be.
Oh no. Way to go.
He's the mayor.
Oh, I'm quite tired of this lunatic.
Why must we suffer because the mayor is sick?
He say: "All abandon from this sinking ship".
Then he's off on another trip.
He don't care about environment.
He has made this a shitty place.
My interest rate shrinks at a rapid pace
Compounded daily on my worried face.
If they take something precious from me,
I'm gonna take something precious from them.
Oh now he's losing his constituency.
We thought, "Oh, this could never happen again."
If I take something precious from him,
He try to take something precious from me.
There's a battle in his head that he cannot win.
There's a man he could never be.
Oh no. Way to go.
He's the mayor.
