Khao San road is notoriously known as being the official backpacker center of Bangkok. With cheap hostels, a seedy underbelly, countless bars, and plenty of street food vendors, the atmosphere here is anything but disinteresting. As a hub for world travelers, this place is booming 24 hours a day but technically comes alive at night. Once dusk hits, the clubs become packed, the streets are flooded with people from all walks of life, and the smell of noodles sizzling in a wok can be smelled for miles. If you are visiting Bangkok, Khao San road is definitely worth a visit. Besides it being a very entertaining quarter, there is lot of great street food to be had here that you can't find anywhere else. From banana roti to mango sticky rice served up by a granny, the street food vendors in this area have mastered their trade! All the street food is affordably priced from 10 baht to 50 baht which makes trying many things easy on your wallet. You can also share your food with a friend as the portions tend to be quite massive. Whether you're vegetarian or a meat lover, there is something for everyone. One of the strangest food items I ate in this video would undoubtedly have to be the scorpion. Hoping that it wouldn't kill me, the scorpion was intimidating to eat but actually tasted quite good. It was prepared with a soy pepper sauce that made the flavor resemble beef jerky. Another fun food item I had this night was the deep fried grasshopper which tasted like a skewer of meat. The only thing I had trouble (mentally digesting) was that there were so many legs on my meal! My favorite “meal” of the night was undoubtedly the coconut ice cream which is made from fresh coconut milk and fresh coconut meat. I was very excited to see coconut ice cream available on Khao San road as it is a specialty item I found only in Chiang Mai (in North Thailand). This coconut ice cream is served with a drizzle of chocolate and a sprinkle of peanuts. It's unlike anything I've had before, with its natural sweetness being the real highlight that shined through! Khao San road is also know for their delicious pad thai! You can order it however you'd like from vegetarian (made with tofu and minus fish sauce) to a seafood's paradise (prepared with fresh shrimps). It's a cheap and flavorful meal that will hold you over throughout the day, and it's truly a regional dish from Central Thailand. Khao San road is a fun place to explore in the evening. Make sure to grab a local beer (Chang brand) at one of the eccentric hippie bars and then take a stroll through the colorful avenues lined with outdoor vendors selling everything from carved Buddhas to swimwear. It should be noted that this area is not at all authentic in terms of Thai culture, but that doesn't make it a bad place to visit. As long as you go into the experience knowing that the area is 100% touristic, you should be fine. Ignore the touts, eat some mango sticky rice, and relax to some reggae music while admiring the international crowds.
