Southern Alberta is a region located in the Canadian province of Alberta. In 2004, the region's population was approximately 272,017. The primary cities are Lethbridge and Medicine Hat. The region is known mostly for agricultural production, but other sectors, such as alternative energy, film production and tourism, are emerging.
The region has a total area of approximately 75,500 km² (29,151 sq mi).
Southern Alberta is in the northern Great Plains region, lined to the west by the Canadian Rockies and their foothills. The rest of region is dominated by the semi-arid prairies of the Palliser's Triangle, where farms and ranches have been built, often with the help of irrigation. Rivers generally flow from west to east and include the Oldman River, Bow River, Red Deer River and South Saskatchewan River.
The environment is protected in such areas as Waterton Lakes National Park, Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park and Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, while sites such as Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump and Dinosaur Provincial Park were declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Alberta Badlands are developed in the north-east of the region, prominently along the Red Deer River. Cypress Hills, located in the east, at the border with Saskatchewan, are the highest point between the Rocky Mountains and Labrador.
Alberta (/ælˈbɜːrtə/) is a western province of Canada. With an estimated population of 4,196,457 as of July 1, 2015, it is Canada's fourth-most populous province and the most populous of Canada's three prairie provinces. Alberta and its neighbour Saskatchewan were districts of the Northwest Territories until they were established as provinces on September 1, 1905. The premier has been Rachel Notley since May 2015.
Alberta is bounded by the provinces of British Columbia to the west and Saskatchewan to the east, the Northwest Territories to the north, and the US state of Montana to the south. Alberta is one of three Canadian provinces and territories to border only a single US state and one of only two landlocked provinces. It has a predominantly Humid continental climate, but seasonal temperature average swings are smaller than to areas further east, with winters being warmed by occasional chinook winds bringing sudden warming which moderates average temperatures.
Alberta's capital Edmonton is near the geographic centre of the province and is the primary supply and service hub for Canada's crude oil, oil sands (Athabasca oil sands) and other northern resource industries.

I had the most amazing opportunity of exploring Southern Alberta with good friend Jeff Bartlett. We set our sights on the Crowsnest Pass, Waterton Lake, and if we get lucky Kananaskis Country. It's an amazing feeling connecting with like minded people surrounded by the beauty of nature. Huge thank you to Travel Alberta for inviting me to enjoy their breathtaking province.
Some of my shots from my DJI Phantom 3 drone from the year. From the planting to the harvest.
There are two main highways in Southern Alberta to take west into British Columbia. Hwy 1, the TransCanada Highway, is the most popular route through Banff. Hwy 3, the Crowsnest Highway, is the other choice. For anyone who has never taken that route, this gives you a peak into that trip on Hwy 3 west of Hwy 2 from outside Fort MacLeod to the Crowsnest Pass just before the Alberta/BC border. This treck usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours (depending on road conditions and wind), but here is a condensed view of only 4.5 minutes. This will take you past several small towns and hamlets such as Brocket, Pincher Creek, Cowley, Lundbreck, Bellevue, Hillcrest, Frank, Blairmore, Coleman--and, of course, the famous Burmis Tree and part of the Cowley Wind Farm Project can be seen along the way--as well...

Spring Bear 2017 Got to go Bear hunting with almost the whole crew this year, We got 4 Bears in 2 days in between rain storms. Got my first two bears on this trip. Was a great hunting holiday.
Driving across Alberta, Canada last summer was quite the wild ride. We started in Calgary, exploring the food, culture and gorgeous city center. We then hit the road to learn about the dinosaurs that used to call Alberta home, stopping at the incredible Dinosaur Provincial Park, the Royal Tyrell Museum and the world's largest Trex (statue of course). Near Drumheller, we explored the Badlands and admired the otherworldly hoodoos at sunset. From there we headed west to explore the lush mountains and beautiful lakes of Waterton National Park. I could have stayed in this lakeside resort town, eating the amazing food (loved Wieners of Waterton!) and hiking those incredible forest trails--we even saw bears! To learn more about the ranching side of Alberta, we stayed on a working ranch and met a...
This is a great video that was produced for the Canadian Cattleman's Association CYL Program, it shows consumers how pasture checks are done and some info on summer grazing. Game drives into the Maasai Mara, Kenya, November 3-6, 2011. The Maasai Mara is located in southwest Kenya and is an extension of the Serengeti in Tanzania. However, the terrain in the Mara is more rolling hills with small groups of trees and shrubs. We toured here after the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebras had already left for the southern Serengeti (where we caught the tail end of the migration when we were on the Serengeti, the week before) where they spend the rainy season and give birth to their young. However, we still ran into wildebeest and zebra in the Mara. It turns our that not all these animals participate in the migration. Many herds remain in the Mara to give birth and exploit the vegetative growth during the rainy season there--which is a good thing for the predato...
Game drives into the Serengeti N.P., Tanzania, October 28-30, 2011. From Ngorongoro, we traveled to Serengeti National Park, via Olduvai Gorge--where we learned about the discovery of hominid fossils, representing 3.5 million years of human evolution, associated with the Great Rift Valley. The Serengeti (meaning "endless plain") is located in the Rift Valley and is noted for its concentrations of wildlife. It shares with the Maasai Mara in Kenya The Great Migration where huge herds of wildebeest and zebras move to find sufficient grass to sustain them. In October the herds are moving out of the Mara and into the southern Serengeti where they await the rainy season and the wildebeest have their calves in February. This year (2011) the migration was early and we only caught the tail end ...
