BATON ROUGE – Propelled by a school-record tying 49.700 floor performance, sixth-ranked LSU gymnastics cruised to a season high score and big win over No. 8 Auburn, 197.825-197.125, Friday night in the Maravich Center. A high-energy crowd of 10,177, the third-largest in school history, saw LSU improve to 8-2 overall and 4-1 against Southeastern Conference opponents. Auburn dropped to 5-5 overall and 2-4 versus the SEC. LSU extended its home win streak to 20 after scoring a 49.450 on vault, 49.375 on bars, 49.300 on beam and 49.700 on floor to finish with a 197.825. Auburn ended with a solid 197.125 on the strength of a 49.225 on vault, 49.150 on bars, 49.300 on beam and 49.450 on floor. Individually, LSU junior Ashleigh Gnat brought the crowd to its feet with a fantastic floor performance as the Lake Mary, Florida native earned a perfect 10.0 to wrap up the meet. It marked the first 10 on floor and the third 10 of her career as she has scored two 10s on vault this season. Gnat also captured the vault title with a near-perfect 9.975, and she tied for the beam title with a 9.90. LSU sophomore Myia Hambrick won her fourth all-around title of the season with a career-high tying 39.625. Hambrick won the bars title with a career-best tying 9.925, and she shared the beam title with a 9.90. “We worked hard all week and pushed ourselves to get to the next level, and it resulted in the incredible performance we saw tonight,” LSU head coach D-D Breaux said. “It was a total team effort, and while we know there are things we need to do better, the thing we did tonight was capitalize on momentum and build on each performance. That’s how you have to compete and perform to win a championship.” LSU equaled its season high on vault with a 49.450 in the first rotation. Yet again Ashleigh Gnat stuck her double-twisting Yurchenko vault, and she won the title with a 9.975. Myia Hambrick posted a season-high 9.90, and Sarah Finnegan also tallied a season high with a 9.875. Randii Wyrick added a 9.875 of her own, and Sydney Ewing recorded a 9.825 to round out the Tigers’ scoring. LSU earned a season-high 49.375 on bars in the second rotation, highlighted by Hambrick’s career-high tying 9.925 to win the event title. Shae Zamardi tied her career high with a 9.90, and Finnegan also added a 9.90. For the third straight meet Jessica Savona posted a 9.85, and Wyrick recorded a 9.80. Halfway through the meet LSU led Auburn, 98.825-98.375. LSU tallied the second-highest beam total of the season with a 49.300 in the third rotation. Hambrick and Gnat tied for the team lead with 9.90s, followed closely by Ewing’s season-high tying 9.875. Finnegan finished with a 9.85, and Erin Macadaeg and Julianna Cannamela each earned 9.775s. LSU sealed the win with a school-record tying 49.700 on floor, highlighted by Gnat’s perfect 10. Making her first appearance of the season in the floor lineup, Savona delivered in a big way with a career-high tying 9.95. McKenna Kelley and Wyrick each tallied a career-high 9.925 with fantastic performances, and Hambrick earned her fourth score of 9.90 on floor this season to round out the scoring. The Tigers travel to face No. 2 Florida (6-1, 4-1) next Friday in Gainesville, Florida. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. CT and will air live on SEC Network.
