Enormous, nearly seven-foot-long French fries emerge from a bag that is suspended from the gallery ceiling; a huge piece of cake and a fifteen-foot-long ice cream cone made of floppy cloth are placed on pedestals in the exhibition space. Another cone is made of plastic and located on the roof of a Cologne department store near the Neumarkt square. These kinds of monuments, found in public spaces in numerous cities around world, are the works that made Claes Oldenburg a recognizable artist to many people.
The exhibition at the Museum Ludwig offers the most comprehensive overview of the artist’s oeuvre to date, covering his artistic development from the late 1950s to the mid-70s.
A highlight of the exhibition is the “Mouse Museum,” originally created for documenta 5 (1972) and presenting 385 curious objects and studio models that Claes Oldenburg collected over the years, among them a pen in the shape of a woman’s leg, an oversized toothbrush, and a piece of cake made of plastic.
Born in 1929 in Stockholm, Claes Oldenburg is one of the chief exponents of American Pop Art. He belongs to a generation of artists who, beginning in the 1960s, wanted art to be less elitist, aiming at making it radically popular and true-to-life. Thanks to his creative panache, he propagated a new type of art that “drips, is heavy and dull and as sweet and silly as life itself.”

Ludwig (film)
Ludwig is a 1972 film directed by Italian director Luchino Visconti about the life and death of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Helmut Berger stars as Ludwig, Romy Schneider reprises her role as Empress Elisabeth of Austria (from Sissi (1955) and its two sequels).
The film was made in Munich and other parts of Bavaria at these locations: Roseninsel, Berg Castle, Lake Starnberg, Castle Herrenchiemsee, Castle Hohenschwangau, Linderhof Palace, Cuvilliés Theatre, Nymphenburg Palace, Ettal and Neuschwanstein Castle. Visconti suffered a stroke during filming. Other film location was the Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl, Upper Austria.

Plot: In the 1890s, Clarence Darrow was a corporate railroad lawyer who had a crisis of conscience when he saw the plight of the underprivileged. In response, Darrow quits to fight in the courts on their behalf. In a career that would mark him as the Lawyer for the Damned, we follow Darrow's life through his highs like his labor victories to the low of the hopeless McNamara trial that got him indicted for jury tampering. Plot: In London, August 1914, Austrian star Elsa Duranyi (Gertrude Michael) and English matinee idol Alan Barclay (Herbert Marshall) are in love and plan an immediate marriage. But the War comes and Elsa mysteriously disappears. Alan's ease in speaking German results in his appointment to the British Intelligence and, to aid his use as a spy, they announce he was killed in action. He takes the name and personality of "shell-shocked" Hans Teller, a German prisoner, and is sent into Germany on an exchange of prisoners. Elsa, now a spy in the service of the Fatherland, is in Monte Carlo, where Allied officers on leave can be tempted into revealing war secrets. In Germany, Alan, posing as Teller, is listed as unfit for service, contacts Carl Schrottle (Rod LaRocque), another British agent. They are to locate the German "Big Bertha," the long-range gun bombarding Paris. They are successful and the gun is destroyed. Elsa is recalled and given the assignment of locating the British spy organization and its members. Through her surveillance of Carl, she meets Hans Teller and recognizes him as Alan, but doesn't let on. Alone, she agrees to flee to Holland with him but her superior officer, Ludwig (Lionel Atwill), is not fooled and is in pursuit.

Oldenburg put together an odd collection of kitsch, found objects, souvenirs, trivial everyday pieces and toys plus material and prototyps for his art works. The Mouse Museum was first shown in 1972 at the documenta 5 in Kassel and then acquired by the Ludwig Collection and donated to the mumok. Later a seperate "Ray Gun" wing was added, also belonging to the mumok.

These kinds of monuments, found in public spaces in numerous cities around world, are the works that made Claes Oldenburg a recognizable artist to many people. The exhibition at the Museum Ludwig offers the most comprehensive overview of the artist’s oeuvre to date, covering his artistic development from the late 1950s to the mid-70s. A highlight of the exhibition is the “Mouse Museum,” originally created for documenta 5 (1972) and presenting 385 curious objects and studio models that Claes Oldenburg collected over the years, among them a pen in the shape of a woman’s leg, an oversized toothbrush, and a piece of cake made of plastic. In the 1960s she collaborated with Dimitris Papamichail in a number of popular movies. The popular celebrity couple married in the 1960s, but divorced in 1975. She received the prize for lead woman's role at the inaugural Greek Cinema Festival in Thessaloniki in 1960 for her starring role in the movie "Mantalena". Her first film was Nikos Tsiforos' "The little Mouse", followed by scores of other popular dramatic and comic films. Her father died during World War 2, defending his country against the German invasion, and she has two brothers, film director Takis Vougiouklakis, and architect Antonis Vougiouklakis. Her first theatre performance as a star, was a George Bernard Shaw play, called Anthony and Cleopatra, but it was a commercial disaster, although a critical victory for the star. The 1966 Broadway production became a hit and spawned a 1972 film as well as numerous subsequent productions. It is based on John Van Druten's 1951 play I Am a Camera, which in turn was adapted from the 1939 short novel Goodbye to Berlin by Christopher Isherwood. Set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power, it focuses on nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around the 19-year-old English cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. A sub-plot involves the doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewish fruit vendor. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub which serves as a constant metaphor for the tenuous and threatening state of late Weimar Germany throughout the show. Sandy Wilson, who had achieved success with The Boy Friend in the 1950s, had completed the book and most of the score for Goodbye to Berlin, his musicalization of I Am a Camera, when he discovered producer David Black's option on both the 1951 Van Druten play and its source material by Christopher Isherwood had lapsed and been acquired by Harold Prince. Prince commissioned Joe Masteroff to work on the book, and when the two men agreed Wilson's score failed to capture the essence of late-1920s Berlin, John Kander and Fred Ebb were invited to join the project. The new version was initially a dramatic play preceded by a prologue of songs describing the Berlin atmosphere from various points of view. As the composers began to distribute the songs between scenes, they realized the story could be told in the structure of a more traditional book musical, and they replaced some of the songs with tunes more relevant to the plot. Isherwood's original characters began to change as well. The male lead became an American writer who teaches English; the anti-Semitic landlady was transformed into a tolerant woman with a Jewish beau, Herr Schultz, who owned a fruit store; two language students were eliminated; and two loathsome but integral characters - prostitute Fräulein Kost and Nazi Ernst Ludwig - were added to the mix. The musical ultimately became two separate stories in one, the first a revue centered on the decadence of the seedy Kit Kat Klub, the second a story set in the real world in which the club existed.[1] After seeing one of the last rehearsals before the company headed to Boston for the pre-Broadway run, Jerome Robbins suggested the musical sequences outside the cabaret be eliminated. Prince ignored his advice, as did Bob Fosse when he directed the film adaptation. In Boston, Jill Haworth struggled with her characterization of cabaret performer Sally Bowles. She was a blonde dressed in a white dress that suggested senior prom more than tawdry nightclub. Prince's staging was unusual for the time. As the audience filled the theater, the curtain was already up, revealing a stage containing nothing but a large mirror reflecting the auditorium. There was no overture; instead, a drum roll and cymbal crash led into the opening number. Sandy Wilson, who had achieved success with The Boy Friend in the 1950s, had completed the book and most of the score for Goodbye to Berlin, his musicalization of I Am a Camera, when he discovered producer David Black's option on both the 1951 Van Druten play and its source material by Christopher Isherwood had lapsed and been acquired by Harold Prince. Prince commissioned Joe Masteroff to work on the book, and when the two men agreed Wilson's score failed to capture the essence of late-1920s Berlin, John Kander and Fred Ebb were invited to join the project. The new version was initially a dramatic play preceded by a prologue of songs describing the Berlin atmosphere from various points of view. As the composers began to distribute the songs between scenes, they realized the story could be told in the structure of a more traditional book musical, and they replaced some of the songs with tunes more relevant to the plot. Isherwood's original characters began to change as well. The male lead became an American writer who teaches English; the anti-Semitic landlady was transformed into a tolerant woman with a Jewish beau, Herr Schultz, who owned a fruit store; two language students were eliminated; and two loathsome but integral characters - prostitute Fräulein Kost and Nazi Ernst Ludwig - were added to the mix. The musical ultimately became two separate stories in one, the first a revue centered on the decadence of the seedy Kit Kat Klub, the second a story set in the real world in which the club existed.[1] After seeing one of the last rehearsals before the company headed to Boston for the pre-Broadway run, Jerome Robbins suggested the musical sequences outside the cabaret be eliminated. Prince ignored his advice, as did Bob Fosse when he directed the film adaptation. In Boston, Jill Haworth struggled with her characterization of cabaret performer Sally Bowles. She was a blonde dressed in a white dress that suggested senior prom more than tawdry nightclub. Prince's staging was unusual for the time. As the audience filled the theater, the curtain was already up, revealing a stage containing nothing but a large mirror reflecting the auditorium. There was no overture; instead, a drum roll and cymbal crash led into the opening number. The juxtaposition of dialogue scenes with songs used as exposition and separate cabaret numbers providing social commentary was a novel concept that initially startled the audience, but as they gradually came to understand the difference between the two, they were able to accept the reasoning behind them.
