Oslo (English pronunciation: /ˈɒzloʊ/, OZ-loh,Norwegian pronunciation: [ˈuʂˈlu] ( listen) or, rarer [ˈusˈlu] or [ˈuʂlu]) is the capital and the most populous city in Norway.
Oslo constitutes both a county and a municipality. Founded in the year 1040, and established as a "kaupstad" or trading place in 1048 by King Harald III, the city was elevated to a bishopric in 1070 and a capital under Haakon V around 1300. Personal unions with Denmark from 1397 to 1523 and again from 1536 to 1814 and with Sweden from 1814 to 1905 reduced its influence. After being destroyed by a fire in 1624, the city was moved closer to Akershus Fortress during the reign of King Christian IV and renamed Christiania in his honour. It was established as a municipality (formannskapsdistrikt) on 1 January 1838. Following a spelling reform, it was known as Kristiania from 1877 to 1925, at which time its original Norwegian name was restored.
Oslo is the economic and governmental centre of Norway. The city is also a hub of Norwegian trade, banking, industry and shipping. It is an important centre for maritime industries and maritime trade in Europe. The city is home to many companies within the maritime sector, some of which are among the world's largest shipping companies, shipbrokers and maritime insurance brokers. Oslo is a pilot city of the Council of Europe and the European Commission intercultural cities programme.
Aker Brygge is a popular area for shopping, dining, and entertainment in Oslo, Norway.
Aker Brygge is west of Pipervika, an arm of the Oslo Fjord, on the former ship yard of Akers Mekaniske Verksted, which was shut down in 1982. Before the shipyard was established there in 1854, the area was known as Holmen. It was an old yard where some industrial corporations established, and a suburban establishment grew in the early 19th century.
Aker Brygge is served by the Aker Brygge tram station.
The area contained shipyards and engineering industry - Aker Mekaniske Verksted AS - until 1982.
The construction of Aker Brygge was carried out in four steps by the realtors Aker Eiendom AS. A few old industrial buildings were demolished, while several of the major workshop halls were rebuilt as shopping areas. The first step of the construction was finished in 1986, with Telje, Torp and Aasen as architects. The fourth and final construction, the Storebrand insurance building facing Munkedamsveien, was completed in 1998. The area consists of a shopping center with shops and restaurants, a cinema, office space, and apartments. Additionally, there is a small boat harbour, and a terminal for the ferries to Nesodden. The area measures 260,000 m2.
Akershus Fortress (Norwegian: Akershus Festning) or Akershus Castle (Norwegian: Akershus slott) is a medieval castle that was built to protect Oslo, the capital of Norway. It has also been used as a prison.
It is not known exactly when the construction of the castle started but it is believed that it happened around the late 1290s, by King Haakon V, replacing Tønsberg as one of the two most important Norwegian castles of the period (the other being Båhus). It was constructed in response to the Norwegian nobleman, Earl Alv Erlingsson of Sarpsborg’s earlier attack on Oslo that occurred in 1287. In the aftermath of the attack, it became clear that the city’s existing defences weren’t effective and therefore, a stronger defensive centre was needed.
The castle is mentioned in written sources for the first time in 1300 in a letter from king Haakon to a church in Oslo. However, the letter does not mention how far the construction of the castle has progressed by then.
Oslo City is one of the largest shopping centres in central Oslo, Norway, with a turnover of 1,444 billion Norwegian kroner in 2005. The shopping centre was built in 1988, and is visited by c. 50,000 people a day – 16 million a year. It has 16,000 m² of commercial space, with 93 stores on five floors.

Norway (i/ˈnɔːrweɪ/ NAWR-way; Norwegian: Norge (Bokmål) or Noreg (Nynorsk)), officially the Kingdom of Norway, is a sovereign and unitary monarchy whose territory comprises the western portion of the Scandinavian Peninsula plus the island Jan Mayen and the archipelago of Svalbard. The Antarctic Peter I Island and the sub-Antarctic Bouvet Island are dependent territories and thus not considered part of the Kingdom. Norway also lays claim to a section of Antarctica known as Queen Maud Land. Until 1814, the Kingdom included the Faroe Islands (since 1035), Greenland (1261), and Iceland (1262). It also included Shetland and Orkney until 1468.
Norway has a total area of 385,252 square kilometres (148,747 sq mi) and a population of 5,109,059 people (2014). The country shares a long eastern border with Sweden (1,619 km or 1,006 mi long). Norway is bordered by Finland and Russia to the north-east, and the Skagerrak Strait to the south, with Denmark on the other side. Norway has an extensive coastline, facing the North Atlantic Ocean and the Barents Sea.

Top Sightseeing locations to visit in Oslo, Norway. Including Downtown Oslo, The Royal Castle, museums, Vigelandsparken, Holmenkollen, and more. The exact locations are listed at the end of the description. The Oslo Opera: Do this one! The opera building is adjacent to the central station, and it's awesome. It's architecture is like walking on an iceberg, and it overlooks the Oslo fjord and Akershus Castle. Doesn't take much time. Karl Johans gate: The main walking street that connects Central Station (Oslo S) with the Royal Castle. I guess it's a must when you come to Oslo. You can't avoid it, and you shouldn't! Because it's the main street of Oslo. But Karl Johan is mostly for the tourists, beggars, scammers. People that live in Oslo, like me, hardly ever go there. Royal Castle:...
The proud spirit of the Norwegian people shines in every dimension of their capital city — from its once-fearsome Viking ships to its sleek new Opera House, from a fun folk museum that keeps traditions alive to the constant festival of its thriving harborfront. Connecting with the culture, we enjoy art — from Vigeland's statues to Munch's scream — and join local friends for a boat ride on their fjord. © 2010 Rick Steves' Europe
Welcome to Oslo, the capital city of Norway. Centuries ago, Viking longships prowled the waters around Norway. Some of those longships survived the ensuing years and found their way to the Viking Ship Museum, which is a must-see on any Oslo tour. The three longships on display here have been recovered from various parts of the country, and the museum also contains a number of artifacts from the Viking Age. Norway’s rich connection to the sea did not stop with the Vikings, though; just over a mile away from the Viking Ship Museum are several other educational complexes dedicated to the salt water that flows through Oslo’s veins. Visit the Norwegian Maritime Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum, and the Fram Museum to get a fuller idea of Oslo’s seaborne heritage. While in town, stop by the Nobel...
Spectacularly situated at the head of a 60-mile-long fjord, Oslo is Norway's biggest city yet it's easy to navigate with its compact historic core and great public transportation. Karl Johans Gate, the city's people-friendly main drag stretches from the train station to Royal Palace. Nearby, the harborfront hums with international shipping and a thriving cruise industry. The new Oslo Airport is expanding. It will be completed in 2017, allowing 28 million passengers to travel to and from the airport every year. We were asked by Dinamo to make a film visualizing the changes. The model was made by the excellent wearetheartdepartment. The miniature model, which had to be both architectural and animatable, was more than 2 meters long and had hundreds of pieces. It was built using a selection of hard woods to echo the design of the actual airport. Agency: Dinamo Production company: 4 ½ and Passion Pictures
The film documents an immersive art installation called Submergence. The project, made by digital arts group Squidsoup and first shown at Galleri ROM in Oslo, Norway, transforms physical space into a Mixed Reality environment where virtual and real worlds coincide. The result is an immersive walkthrough experience that uses light to alter our perceptions of space and presence. The experience is akin to walking through an abstract virtual environment, where pixels on a screen are replaced by thousands of points of light floating in space. These points of light create evocations and atmospheres, presence.

Little Oslo is a presentation of the Norwegian Capital city of Oslo seen from above. The idea is to see how Oslo would look like in a miniature world. I started filming for this project in the summer of 2010 and have had my camera with me all summer/fall to capture any footage that might be useful for this film. There are not too many tall buildings in Oslo and I´m very greatful to all those who have let me run around on their rooftops to film :) All footage is filmed with the GoPro camera, and has been edited in Adobe After Effects CS5. A special thanks goes to Cinnamon Chasers who´s let me use the awesome track "Captain America" for this movie. Travel video about destination Oslo in Norway. Although the Norwegian metropolis of Oslo is a modern city, it continues to be inspired by the lively spirit of its past traders, fighting men and seafarers. The unique capital city of the Vikings is full of both culture and sport, including a royal castle, various museums, ancient churches and world famous sporting events. It has 900 years of history. The conference rooms of the city's government are decorated with frescos and paintings by Munch, Krogh, Revold and Rolfsen and each year on the 10th of December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony takes place. West of the harbor basin is Aker Brygge, a city quarter that was created on the site of a former shipyard and which features some unusual architectur...

Karl Johans gate is the main walking street of Oslo. It stretches from Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) on one side, to the Royal Palace (Slottet) on the other. Btw. "Karl Johans gate" literally means "Karl Johan's Street". The Visit Oslo tourist information office is located at the east side of Oslo Central Station. On the place outside of the station (Jernbanetorget) there is a clock tower called Trafikanten, which houses the Public Transportation Information office. The lower parts of Karl Johan, and especially the first intersecting street, Skippergata, is infamous for junkies and street prostitution. The second intersection street is Dronningens gate (The Queen's street). Here there is a small shopping center Arkaden. Also in Dronningens gate is Kirkeristen, which houses a few cafes ...

At the end of the 2007/08 ski season in Norway, I take a vacation to Malta with some coworkers from Kvitfjell: Ditte Krogsgaard Pedersen (DK), Tasja Nielsen (DK), Nicklas Lindqvist (SE) and myself (US) meet Clayton Borg (MT) in his homeland, where his family offers us the use of their condominium overlooking Mellieha Bay. Clayton doubles as a tour guide extraordinaire by spending the next eleven days driving us around his small three-island country, exploring sights both on and off the beaten path, introducing us to his generous family and friends, and connecting us to a culture that has been a crossroads of civilization for thousands of years. DAY I (Saturday, April 26): I travel by train from Ringebu to Gardermoen airport in Oslo, where I meet Ditte and Tasja, who have just returned t...

Please visit our webpages at http://censusfilm.no/ Discover the many faces of Oslo. You may follow the links in this video to other videos to find out more about Oslo. Most of the linked videos will lead you to videos from Visit Oslo. However, links will probably not work on mobile devices. In the beginning of this video, we take you to the Opera House in Oslo, which was designed by the Norwegian architectural company Snøhetta. Furthermore, you will get a chance to check out the mood of the city at the head of the Oslo Fjord. The river Akerselva is a pittoresque river flowing through Oslo from the lake Maridalsvannet and down to the Oslo Fjord. The river is still an important "green lung" for the citizens of Oslo, and just a quick stroll away you will be in the middle of urban Oslo wit...
Welcome to Norway
Well shake it up and fizzle it out, call it what you will
There's nothing quite like getting out of your face to stop you felling ill...
But the next day you're out there and you're still stoned
Your only seeing policemen, you're feeling all alone
You need a dose of vitamins, you need some H2O
Concentration comes too fast and then it tends to go
And if you get all stoned again the whole thing just repeats
So pull it up and wake it up with arms and legs and feet
Then you get to be so knackered cos, you're doing this and that
You need to quit the madness, re-learn how to relax
By the time you've reached the point at which you've lost the will to rush
You'll be so relaxed that next day, you'll be doing twice as much!
So pour it down or cook it up, call it what you can
There's nothing quite like food and drink to stop you going mad
But the next day you're out there and you're still full
Of alcohol, cholesterol, wind and piss and drool
You need a pile of tablets, you need a place to sit
The time it takes to run around has shrunk and doesn't fit
Then gradually you lose the speeds
Of fast and slow and ideas feed
From work to play until the need
To set the gap has gone
So until then I think I'll spend
The week re-living the weekend
And vice-versa he's off again
Now where's that chorus gone?
Open it up or close it down but take it when you go
Cos there's nothing quite like going away to a place you hardly know
And having a session of mental regress - yes yes
I think we get the point... joint?! Pint?!
