Vilnius (Lithuanian pronunciation: [ˈvʲɪlʲnʲʊs]; Polish: Wilno, see also other names) is the capital of Lithuania and its largest city, with a population of 542,664 as of 2015. Vilnius is located in the southeast part of Lithuania and is the second largest city in the Baltic states.
Vilnius is the seat of the Vilnius City Municipality and of the Vilnius District Municipality. It is also the capital of Vilnius County. The first known written record of Vilnius as the Lithuanian capital is known from Gediminas' letters in 1323.
Vilnius is classified as a Gamma global city according to GaWC studies, and is known for the architecture in its Old Town, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. Its Jewish influence until the 20th century has led to it being described as the "Jerusalem of Lithuania" and Napoleon named it "the Jerusalem of the North" as he was passing through in 1812. In 2009, Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture, together with the Austrian city of Linz.
Vilnius University (Lithuanian: Vilniaus universitetas; other names exist) is the oldest university in the Baltic states and one of the oldest in Northern Europe. It is the largest university in Lithuania.
The university was founded in 1579 as the Jesuit Academy (College) of Vilnius by Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland, Stephen Báthory. It was the third oldest university (after the Cracow Academy and the Albertina) in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the aftermath of the Third Partition of Poland (1795) and the November Uprising (1830–1831), the university was closed down and suspended its operation until 1919. In the aftermath of World War I the university saw failed attempts to restart it by Lithuania (December 1918) and invading Soviet forces (March 1919). It finally resumed operations as Stefan Batory University in Poland (August 1919), a period followed by another Soviet occupation in 1920, and the less than two-years of the Republic of Central Lithuania, incorporated into Poland in 1922.

This video took me nearly 2 months to get up, and for that I apologise. As you noticed, the video is 16 minutes long! It took ages to get each part done to a point where I just had no time! But I got it done and I hope you liked it! I really loved traveling alone! I usually travel with friends, but I enjoyed this vlog so much because of how I just got to explore by myself and experience it alone. It's nice sometimes. :) Dodie: http://www.youtube.com/doddleoddle Instagram: http://www.instagram.com/EvanEdinger Merch: http://www.fireflightmerch.com/collections/evan-edinger Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/EvanEdi...
Travel video about destination Vilnius in Lithuania. Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and a melting pot of different cultures. The city’s main landmark is Castle Hill with its red Gediminas Tower that crowns the steep hill and marks the beginning of the city's history. Within the tower is the Gothic castle of Grand Duke Vytautas which was built of red brick in 1419. The Boulevard begins in Cathedral Square which was where Grand Duke Mindaugas had the city’s first cathedral built behind which was situated his palace. The basilica contains a copy of the Shroud Of Turin. The Saint Johannis Church is part of the university complex. Along with its impressive altar, this modest church is one of the country’s most beautiful examples of baroque design and possesses no less than ten altars. Be...
We have recently embarked on a bus tour of the Baltic countries. Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, was the first city on the tour. The old town has a bustling atmosphere with musicians, markets and many shops. There is a little Bohemian Uzupis district just outside of the old town which we explored. We ended our time in Lithuania with a visit to the Hill of Crosses which has more than a million crosses, an incredible sight to behold. Trip guide for Vilnius city old town Lithuania
From Riga, we catch a bus to the Lithuanian capital. We marvel at the Christmas market in Cathedral Square, visit the self-declared Uzupis Republic (stopping by the mermaid, of course) and traipse up to the castle. Vilnius is fantastic - especially in the snow.
