Vilnia (also Vilnelė; Polish: Wilejka, Wilenka, Belarusian: Вільня/Vilnia [ˈvʲilʲnʲa]) is a river in Lithuania. Its source is near the village of Vindžiūnai, 5 km south of Šumskas, at the Lithuanian-Belarusian border. The Vilnia is 79.6 km long and its basin covers 624 sq. km. For 13 km its flow makes the Belarus-Lithuania border, and the remaining 69 km are in Lithuania until it flows into the Neris River at Vilnius. Eventually, its waters, via the Neris's drainage into the Neman River, flow into the Baltic Sea. Its confluence with the Neris lies within the city of Vilnius, and the river's name was probably the source of the city's name.
Springs along its length contribute to its flow. A series of wells accessing the river's groundwaters, drilled in the early 20th century, remained a major supply of potable water in the city into the late 20th century. The name of the river derives from the Lithuanian language word vilnis ("a surge") or vilnyti ("to surge").
Vilnelė, the diminutive form of the original hydronym Vilnia, came into popular use in Lithuanian and largely replaced the latter.
Naujoji Vilnia (Polish: Nowa Wilejka) is a neighborhood in eastern Vilnius, Lithuania situated along the banks of the Vilnia River. It has eldership status. According to the 2011 census, the municipality has a population of 31,933.
It started as a separate town in the second half of the 19th century when the Warsaw – Saint Petersburg Railway was built. It grew as a narrow strip along the rails. Then another major Libau–Romny Railway line connecting Vilnius with Minsk was built. In 1911, Church of St. Casimir was built. Before Vilnius passed to Poland in 1920, it had a number of small manufacturing shops including wood products, yeast, scythes (known as Russian: litovka), knives, paper and knitting mills.
During mass deportations to Siberia in June 1941, some 30,000 deportees passed through the Naujoji Vilnia railway station. After World War II, former shops were nationalized by the Soviet authorities and converted into large factories for machine tools, agricultural equipment and other factories. In 1957 it was incorporated into Vilnius city.

Vilnius Travel Guide: The word Vilnius is a masculine form of a Vilnia river's name (which is feminine) and refers to the river surge. Therefore a variety of spelling in other languages (Vilna, Wilna, Vilno, Wilno) is in fact the same word adapted to the corresponding grammar. The area was inhabited since the Mesolithic era, however it became a capital city only since 1323 when Grand Duke Gediminas transferred the Seat from Trakai to Vilnius. A monument to Gediminas (author of the concept is a Lithuanian-American sculptor Vytautas Kašuba) stands in Cathedral Square near the site of the former pagan temple. The Grand Duke is depicted at the moment when he made a final decision, dismounted from his horse and blessed the land which will become the capital; its glory shall echo like an iron-...

The historical center of Vilnius is located in the confluence of the Vilnia and Neris rivers. The city grew and developed around the castle complex that was built in the legendary Šventaragis valley. The ancient buildings, that have survived, bring us the memories of the past glory. Since the first mention of Lithuania a thousand years ago, country has gone through a complicated road to build and get independent state. The old Vilnius streets represent a live study of our statehood. Old palaces and houses, the former residences of Pacas, Radvila, Sapiega and Chodkevičius families remind us of those famous Lithuanian families...

St. Anne's Church is a Roman Catholic church in Vilnius' Old Town, on the right bank of the Vilnia River. It is a prominent example of both Flamboyant Gothic and Brick Gothic styles. St. Anne's is a prominent landmark in the Old Town of Vilnius that enabled the district to be included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites. The church has one nave and two towers. It was built using 33 different kinds of clay bricks and painted in red. The interior is decorated in the Baroque style, as is its altar. The imitative neo-Gothic bell tower, constructed in the 1870s to Chagin's designs, stands nearby. This film features both external and internal views of the church, with particular attention to the architecture and decor.

Today, Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is one of the most frequently visited cities of Eastern Europe. It draws attention, not only because of its unique architectural character, but also by its cultural events and attractions. During the first ten years of independence the city has become a tourist attraction centre. It is, therefore, not surprising that during these ten years the number of tourists has consistently increased and at the same time tourist infrastructure and services have been developed. Vilnius, as the capital of Lithuania, is the home of the President, the Seimas, the Government and the Supreme Court. Diplomatic missions, educational, cultural, financial, research, and healthcare institutions are based here. It is also the largest city of the country. According to the ...
