Canaan

Canaan (/ˈkeɪnən/; Northwest Semitic: knaʿn; Phoenician: 𐤊𐤍𐤏𐤍; Biblical Hebrew: כנען / Knaʿn; Masoretic: כְּנָעַן / Kənā‘an) was a region in the Ancient Near East during the late 2nd millennium BC. In the Bible it corresponds to the Levant, in particular the areas of the Southern Levant that are the main setting of the narrative of the Hebrew Bible, i.e. the area of Israel, Philistia, Phoenicia, and other nations.

The name Canaan (Kənā‘an כְּנָעַן) is used commonly in the Hebrew Bible, with particular definition in references Genesis 10 and Numbers 34, where the "Land of Canaan" extends from Lebanon southward to the "Brook of Egypt" and eastward to the Jordan River Valley. References to Canaan in the Bible are usually backward looking, referring to a region that had become something else (i.e. the Land of Israel).

The term Canaanites is by far the most frequently used ethnic term in the Bible, in which they are commonly described as a people who had been annihilated by the Israelites.

Canaan, Connecticut

Canaan is a town in Litchfield County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 1,081 at the 2000 census. The town of Canaan is often referred to locally by the name of its principal constituent village, Falls Village.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.3 square miles (86.2 km²), of which 33.0 square miles (85.3 km²) is land and 0.3 square mile (0.9 km²) (0.99%) is water.

History

American Revolutionary War soldier and historian Lemuel Roberts was born in Canaan in 1755.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,081 people, 445 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 32.8 people per square mile (12.7/km²). There were 610 housing units at an average density of 18.5 per square mile (7.1/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.04% White, 1.48% Black or African American, 0.19% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.

Living Large

Living Large is the debut studio album by American hip hop group Heavy D & the Boyz. The album was released on October 27, 1987.

Reception

The album was released in 1987 for Uptown Records and was produced by names such as DJ Eddie F (tracks 2, 7-9), Teddy Riley (tracks 3-8, 10-11, 13), and Marley Marl (1, 12). The album was a success for the group, reaching number 92 on the Billboard 200 and number 10 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It sold over 300,000 copies. Though not a commercial success when it first was released, Living Large is today considered to be a classic. Three singles were released, "Mr. Big Stuff", "The Overweight Lover's In The House" and "Don't You Know".

In 1998, the album was selected as one of The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums Ever.
