The Hill of Crosses (Lithuanian: Kryžių kalnas ) is a site of pilgrimage about 12 km north of the city of Šiauliai, in northern Lithuania. The precise origin of the practice of leaving crosses on the hill is uncertain, but it is believed that the first crosses were placed on the former Jurgaičiai or Domantai hill fort after the 1831 Uprising. Over the generations, not only crosses, but giant crucifixes, carvings of Lithuanian patriots, statues of the Virgin Mary and thousands of tiny effigies and rosaries have been brought here by Catholic pilgrims. The exact number of crosses is unknown, but estimates put it at about 55,000 in 1990 and 100,000 in 2006.
Over the generations, the place has come to signify the peaceful endurance of Lithuanian Catholicism despite the threats it faced throughout history. After the 3rd partition of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795, Lithuania became part of the Russian Empire. Poles and Lithuanians unsuccessfully rebelled against Russian authorities in 1831 and 1863. These two uprisings are connected with the beginnings of the hill: as families could not locate bodies of perished rebels, they started putting up symbolic crosses in place of a former hill fort.
The Hill may refer to:
A hill is a landform that extends above the surrounding terrain. It often has a distinct summit, although in areas with scarp/dip topography a hill may refer to a particular section of flat terrain without a massive summit (e.g. Box Hill, Surrey).
The distinction between a hill and a mountain is unclear and largely subjective, but a hill is universally considered to be less tall and less steep than a mountain. In the United Kingdom, geographers historically regarded mountains as hills greater than 1,000 feet (300 m) above sea level, which formed the basis of the plot of the 1995 film The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain. In contrast, hillwalkers have tended to regard mountains as peaks 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level: the Oxford English Dictionary also suggests a limit of 2,000 feet (610 m) and Whittow states "Some authorities regard eminences above 600 m (2,000 ft) as mountains, those below being referred to as hills." The Great Soviet Encyclopedia defines hill as an upland with a relative height up to 200 m (660 ft).
Crosses may refer to:
October 2006 Lithuania's national treasure, the Hill of Crosses, has a troubled and mysterious history. The Soviets repeatedly tried to destroy it. Now, it's become a symbol of the nation's struggle and spirituality. The Hill of Crosses -- a small mountain of approximately 100,000 crosses -- is a curious phenomenon. No one manages or organises it -- it just is. The Soviets razed it again and again, only to have the crosses reappear. As Prof Viatanis Rimkis explains: "During the struggle for our freedom, the crosses became a weapon that was invincible." Produced by ABC Australia Distributed by Journeyman Pictures
Hundreds of thousands of crosses sit on a hill in northern Lithuania. Although this place of pilgrimage now represents both Christian devotion and the Lithuanian identity, the tradition of leaving crosses dates back to 1831. On the Road from Riga to Vilnius! Hill of Crosses History The Hill of Crosses is an historical and architectural monument, a unique composition of folk art. It attracts people with its peace, spirituality, authenticity, and sacred nature. The oblong mound, somewhat similar to a saddle, stands on a plain and is surrounded by the valleys of Kulpė Stream and its nameless tributaries. The hill itself is the Jurgaičiai-Domantai mound, which sits next to a former ancient village that was here in the 13th-14th centuries. It became a sacred site in the 19th century. It is said that the first crosses were erected here by the next-of-kin of the rebels that fell in the 1831 rebellion. Those family members were not permitted by the Tsarist reign to pay proper tribute at the graves of their re...
The Hill of Crosses in Lithuania is an unparalleled symbol of resistance to religious persecution. The hill gained immense significance in the lives of Lithuanian believers during the Soviet era as a place of anonymous yet remarkably persevering resistance to the totalitarian regime. After independence was regained, it quickly became a symbol of the nation's unshakeable faith, of its past suffering and of its hope. On September 7, 1993, Pope John Paul II visited the Hill of Crosses, declaring it a place for hope, peace, love and sacrifice. Crosses erected here over 150 years demonstrate the power of Christ's Cross to change the destiny of individuals and entire nations. The hill remains under nobody's jurisdiction; therefore people are free to build crosses as they see fit. Music from:...
The story of the Hill of Crosses is an interesting one. I don't have to type it out because Jen narrates it so nicely. In this video the family searches for a cross we laid down in 1999. Not an easy thing to find. The three sisters also laid down a cross for Grampa, kind of near where the 1999 cross was placed. So in 2019, we'll use this video to guide us to the right spot.

The Hill of Crosses (Kryžių kalnas), near Šiauliai, Lithuania. Some 100,000 crosses and large crucifixes have been planted, laid, or strung up here. It's an old mystical site dating back to pagan times, but is now very Catholic, The soviets did their darndest to destroy this place, mowing down the crosses and setting up guards, but they would keep returning.
We have recently embarked on a bus tour of the Baltic countries. Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, was the first city on the tour. The old town has a bustling atmosphere with musicians, markets and many shops. There is a little Bohemian Uzupis district just outside of the old town which we explored. We ended our time in Lithuania with a visit to the Hill of Crosses which has more than a million crosses, an incredible sight to behold. Three Crosses Not To Die, 1968, starring Craig Hill, Ken Wood, & Evelyn Stewart. Written & directed by Sergio Garrone, AKA Willy S. Regan. A very rare spaghetti western from the golden age of the genre with an engaging plot and even some romance. A TV rip from a slightly worn 35mm print. Enjoy!
