Lithuania (ⁱ/ˌlɪθjuːˈeɪniə/; Lithuanian: Lietuva [lʲɪɛtʊˈvɐ]), officially the Republic of Lithuania (Lithuanian: Lietuvos Respublika), is a country in Northern Europe. One of the three Baltic states, it is situated along the southeastern shore of the Baltic Sea, to the east of Sweden and Denmark. It is bordered by Latvia to the north, Belarus to the east and south, Poland to the south, and Kaliningrad Oblast (a Russian exclave) to the southwest. Lithuania has an estimated population of 2.9 million people as of 2015, and its capital and largest city is Vilnius. Lithuanians are a Baltic people. The official language, Lithuanian, along with Latvian, are the only two living languages in the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family.

For centuries, the southeastern shores of the Baltic Sea were inhabited by various Baltic tribes. In the 1230s, the Lithuanian lands were united by Mindaugas, the King of Lithuania, and the first unified Lithuanian state, the Kingdom of Lithuania, was created on 6 July 1253. During the 14th century, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was the largest country in Europe; present-day Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, and parts of Poland and Russia were the territories of the Grand Duchy. With the Lublin Union of 1569, Lithuania and Poland formed a voluntary two-state union, the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The Commonwealth lasted more than two centuries, until neighboring countries systematically dismantled it from 1772–95, with the Russian Empire annexing most of Lithuania's territory.

The Independent

The Independent is a British national morning newspaper published in London by Independent Print Limited, owned by Alexander Lebedev since 2010. It will cease to be produced in a print edition from late March 2016, but will continue in an online form.

The Independent was launched in 1986 and is one of the youngest UK national daily newspapers. The daily edition was named National Newspaper of the Year at the 2004 British Press Awards. The current editor, Amol Rajan, was appointed in 2013, and its former deputy editor, Archie Bland, in 2012. Bland was one of the youngest people to be appointed to a senior managerial post in the British newspaper industry, at 28 years old. Rajan was not quite 30 at the time of his appointment in June 2013.

Nicknamed the Indy, it was originally a broadsheet newspaper, the newspaper has been published in a tabloid or "compact" format since 2003.The Independent is regarded as coming from the centre-left, on culture and politics, but tends to take a more pro-market stance on economic issues. It has not affiliated itself with any political party and features a range of views given on its editorial and comment pages. The paper originally described itself as "free from party political bias, free from proprietorial influence"—a banner it carried on the front page of its daily edition. This banner was dropped in September 2011.

Supreme court

A supreme court is the highest court within the hierarchy of many legal jurisdictions. Other descriptions for such courts include court of last resort, instance court, judgment court, apex court, and highest court of appeal. Broadly speaking, the decisions of a supreme court are not subject to further review by any other court. Supreme courts typically function primarily as appellate courts, hearing appeals from decisions of lower trial courts, or from intermediate-level appellate courts.

However, not all highest courts are named as such. Civil law states do not tend to have singular highest courts. Additionally, the highest court in some jurisdictions is not named the "Supreme Court", for example, the High Court of Australia; this is because decisions by the High Court could formerly be appealed to the Privy Council. On the other hand, in some places the court named the "Supreme Court" is not in fact the highest court; examples include the New York Supreme Court, the Supreme Courts of several Canadian provinces/territories and the former Supreme Court of Judicature of England and Wales, which are all superseded by higher Courts of Appeal.

Sound bite

A sound bite is a short clip of speech or music extracted from a longer piece of audio, often used to promote or exemplify the full length piece. In the context of journalism, a sound bite is characterized by a short phrase or sentence that captures the essence of what the speaker was trying to say, and is used to summarize information and entice the reader or viewer. The term was coined by the U.S. media in the 1970s. Since then, politicians have increasingly employed sound bites to summarize their positions.

Due to its brevity, the sound bite often overshadows the broader context in which it was spoken, and can be misleading or inaccurate. The insertion of sound bites into news broadcasts or documentaries is open to manipulation, leading to conflict over journalistic ethics.

History

In the 1960s and 1970s, pressure from advertisers on the American television industry to create entertaining news material made sound bites central to political coverage. Politicians began to use PR techniques to craft self-images and slogans that would resonate with the television-viewing audience and ensure their victory in campaigns. The term "sound bite" was coined in the 1980s, during the presidency of Ronald Reagan, who was famous for short, memorable phrases like, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" in reference to the Berlin Wall.

The panel of judges of the Lithuanian Supreme court on Wednesday has started consideration of the complaint of lawyers of the former Soviet OMON officer Konstantin Mikhailov, sentenced to life imprisonment in the case of the death of seven border guards at the checkpoint "Medininkai" in 1991. The appeal was signed by three defenders of Mikhailov — lawyers from Lithuania Ingrida Botyriene and Arunas Marcinkevichius, and the lawyer from Latvia Oscar Rode. The meeting on Wednesday was attended by two lawyers from Lithuania. The defense asks the court to void all charges against their client and drop the case, placing emphasis on the incorrect application of the Criminal code. Protection also considers that the court of appeal violated the requirements of international legal acts. Mikhailov was arrested in November 2007, in Riga. In January of 2008 he was transferred to Lithuania, where he was charged with that in July 1991, when the Republic's independence from the Soviet Union was still not recognized, he participated in the murder of seven Lithuanian customs officers on an Outpost Medininkai South-East from Vilnius, and inflicting serious injuries to another Lithuanian officer.

The panel of judges of the Lithuanian Supreme court on Wednesday has started consideration of the complaint of lawyers of the former Soviet OMON officer Konstantin Mikhailov, sentenced to life imprisonment in the case of the death of seven border guards at the checkpoint "Medininkai" in 1991. The appeal was signed by three defenders of Mikhailov — lawyers from Lithuania Ingrida Botyriene and Arunas Marcinkevichius, and the lawyer from Latvia Oscar Rode. The meeting on Wednesday was attended by two lawyers from Lithuania. The defense asks the court to void all charges against their client and drop the case, placing emphasis on the incorrect application of the Criminal code. Protection also considers that the court of appeal violated the requirements of international legal acts. Mikhailov was arrested in November 2007, in Riga. In January of 2008 he was transferred to Lithuania, where he was charged with that in July 1991, when the Republic's independence from the Soviet Union was still not recognized, he participated in the murder of seven Lithuanian customs officers on an Outpost Medininkai South-East from Vilnius, and inflicting serious injuries to another Lithuanian officer.
