A lever (/ˈliːvər/ or US /ˈlɛvər/) is a machine consisting of a beam or rigid rod pivoted at a fixed hinge, or fulcrum. A lever is a rigid body capable of rotating on a point on itself. It is one of the six simple machines identified by Renaissance scientists. The word entered English about 1300 from Old French, in which the word was levier. This sprang from the stem of the verb lever, meaning "to raise". The verb, in turn, goes back to the Latin levare, itself from the adjective levis, meaning "light" (as in "not heavy"). The word's ultimate origin is the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) stem legwh-, meaning "light", "easy" or "nimble", among other things. The PIE stem also gave rise to the English word "light". A lever amplifies an input force to provide a greater output force, which is said to provide leverage. The ratio of the output force to the input force is the mechanical advantage of the lever.
The earliest remaining writings regarding levers date from the 3rd century BC and were provided by Archimedes. 'Give me a place to stand, and I shall move the Earth with it' is a remark of Archimedes who formally stated the correct mathematical principle of levers (quoted by Pappus of Alexandria). The distance required to do this might be exemplified in astronomical terms as the approximate distance to the Circinus galaxy (roughly 3.6 times the distance to the Andromeda Galaxy) - about 9 million light years.
On April 7, 1994, Federal Express Flight 705, a McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 cargo jet carrying electronics across the United States from Memphis, Tennessee to San Jose, California, experienced an attempted hijacking for the purpose of a suicide attempt.
Auburn Calloway, a Federal Express employee facing possible dismissal for lying about his reported flight hours, boarded the scheduled flight as a deadheading passenger with a guitar case carrying several hammers and a speargun. He intended to disable the aircraft's cockpit voice recorder before take-off and, once airborne, kill the crew with hammers so their injuries would appear consistent with an accident rather than a hijacking. The speargun would be a last resort. He would then crash the aircraft while just appearing to be an employee killed in an accident. This would make his family eligible for a $2.5 million life insurance policy paid by Federal Express.
Calloway's plan was unsuccessful. Despite severe injuries, the crew was able to fight back, subdue Calloway and land the aircraft safely. An attempt at a mental health defense was unsuccessful and Calloway was subsequently convicted of multiple charges including attempted murder, attempted air piracy and interference with flight crew operations. He received two consecutive life sentences. Calloway's appeal was successful in having his conviction for interference ruled as a lesser included offense of attempted air piracy.
Simple Machines was a record label that operated out of Arlington, Virginia. The label was founded by Jenny Toomey and Brad Sigal while both were living in the Positive Force House in north Arlington, but Sigal soon stepped back from involvement. Kristin Thomson stepped up and co-masterminded the project with Toomey and they started a new group house near Positive Force's. At its peak, the label had four paid workers- Toomey, Thomson, Pat Graham and Mickey Menard. The label was formed to 'find creative ways to avoid the established and boring music business'.
The label came into existence in 1990 with the release of "Machines Compilation 7" Series". The Working Holiday! 7" series followed. Simple Machines promoted cooperation with other indie labels all over the United States, and the "sell it at a fair price" ethic. The label also released a compilation of bands covering their "favourite Beat Happening covers". The profits were donated to a youth at risk home in Washington D.C.

Joints and levers in the human body Bones, ligaments, and muscles are the structures that form levers in the body to create human movement. In simple terms, a joint (where two or more bones join together) forms the axis (or fulcrum), and the muscles crossing the joint apply the force to move a weight or resistance. Levers are typically labeled as first class, second class, or third class. All three types are found in the body, but most levers in the human body are third class. A first-class lever has the axis (fulcrum) located between the weight (resistance) and the force (figure 1.21a). An example of a first-class lever is a pair of pliers or scissors. First-class levers in the human body are rare. One example is the joint between the head and the first vertebra (the atlantooccipital joi...

Lever is defined as machine member which can rotate about a fixed pin. It is used to lift heavy loads by the application of less or very less efforts. It is a mechanical device mosthly oerated by hand or foot. Lever consists of three main parts as Fulcrum, Load Arm and Effort Arm. Types of Levers are: 1. First order levers: If the fulcrum is in between load and effort, then it is called as ‘First order levers’. Examples: Hand pump, Punching press hand wheel, Rocker arm etc 2. Second order levers: In this, the length of effort arm is greater than the length of load arm. Example: Dead weight safety valves 3. Third order levers: In this lever, the load arm is greater than the effort arm. Example: Tongs If you like our efforts, we request you to share our work with your friends & family BEC...

The use of abstraction to make complex ideas manageable is fundamental to our work as programmers and to human culture as a whole. That's why mathematics — the study of abstraction — is so important and powerful. I show the process of upgrading a vintage road bike from non-aero brake levers to aero brake levers. I bought this Nishiki Sport bike at a thrift store. The brake levers it came with were non aero brake levers and looked like they originally had safety levers which had been removed. In this video I remove the old non-aero brake levers and install a pair of Dia-Compe Blaze aero brake levers, The aero brake levers had originally been on my Trek 1000 before I upgraded that bike to integrated brake/shift levers (brifters). **If the video was useful or interesting please give it a "thumbs up" and consider subscribing. -Website: http://www.RJTheBikeGuy.com -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RJTheBikeGuy -Subscribe Here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=shyflirt1 -YouTube Ch...
Turn the mirrors face the wall
Don't you feel a little weak?
And I'd catch you when you fall
But you're falling all the time
Do you need it anymore?
Or do you need a little more?
Living your life like a bull in the trade
He doesn't know how it feels
Under my thumb like a bone under nail
She's in the know, how's it feel?
Live your life under machine guns
Canary down the mine
Maybe I'm on the lever
Spoiling my broth like a radio kid
Programmed computerised minds
Waving my luck under your nose
