Here I play a modern Chinese song, 别亦难, (Difficult to say good-bye), which was composed on the first four verses of a beautiful poem by Li Changyin (李商隱, Tang dynasty). The song was firstly performed by Paula Tsui (徐小凤), a famous singer from Hong Kong, in 1988.

We managed to rope in three local artists who not only taught us the song, but also performed with us. We are indebted to them for this number. The song - traditionally among the most loved ones among Hong Kongers - describes how people in Hong Kong, faced life's challenges on the face of adversity to rise above the menial. It teaches one to embrace all the positives of life. This performance was part of Tharangini's mega-charity show in Hong Kong on May 24, 2008, MANJARI - A BOUQUET OF MELODIES.

"Gu Su Xing" 《姑苏行》 (A Visit to Suzhou), performed by Yu Xunfa (俞逊发, 1946-2006), dizi (笛子, Chinese bamboo flute), with the Traditional Instrument Ensemble of the Shanghai Beijing Opera Troupe (上海京剧团民乐队). Gusu (姑苏) is an old name for the city of Suzhou, in southeastern Jiangsu province, China.
The piece was composed in 1962 by the Chinese composer Jiang Xianwei (江先渭, 1924-2014), and the version heard here was probably adjusted by Yu Xunfa. It is unknown who made the arrangement for the ensemble accompaniment.
The piece's slow main melody (beginning at 0:55, and returning at 2:28) is adapted from "Xiao Baimen" 《小拜门》, a qupai ("named tune") from Kunqu (昆曲), China's tradition of classical theater dating back to the Ming Dynasty. This tune is also known as "Xiao Liu Yaojin" 《小柳摇金》, and is essentially an augmented form of the qupai "Jie Jie Gao" 《节节高》, with melodic elaboration.
Recorded in 1975. From "The Moon is High: Folk Instrumental Music" 《月儿高：民族器乐曲》, a 7-inch disc released by China Record Company in 1978 (M-2328). The composer Jiang Xianwei is not credited in the record's jacket notes; the piece is simply called a "folk music piece" (民间乐曲).
This record was acquired by Alan Canfora of Ohio, United States during a trip to China in the summer of 1978.

Hong Kong
Hong Kong (香港; "Fragrant Harbour"), officially Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, is an autonomous territory on the southern coast of China at the Pearl River Estuary and the South China Sea. Hong Kong is known for its skyline and deep natural harbour. It has a land area of 1104 km2 and shares its northern border with Guangdong Province of Mainland China. In the 1980s, negotiations between the United Kingdom and the China resulted in the 1984 Sino-British Joint Declaration, which provided for the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong on 30 June 1997. The territory became a special administrative region of China with a high degree of autonomy on 1 July 1997 under the principle of one country, two systems. Yu Xunfa
Yu Xun-fa (俞遜發) (January 8, 1946 – January 21, 2006), was a Chinese flute player who invented the wind-instrument known as the koudi. Born in Shanghai, he popularized the art of the flute in Chinese culture during the 1970s.
Biography
In elementary school, Yu studied the flute. He participated in the Shanghai "Red Children" Troupe in 1958, and studied under dizi performer Lu Chunling as a disciple.
In 1971, Yu invented the koudi - a small flute made from bamboo. During the 1970s he was most active; touring parts of Europe, Canada, and Asia. He died January 21, 2006 due to liver cancer.

Here I play a modern Chinese song, 别亦难, (Difficult to say good-bye), which was composed on the first four verses of a beautiful poem by Li Changyin (李商隱, Tang dynasty). The song was firstly performed by Paula Tsui (徐小凤), a famous singer from Hong Kong, in 1988.

"Gu Su Xing" 《姑苏行》 (A Visit to Suzhou), performed by Yu Xunfa (俞逊发, 1946-2006), dizi (笛子, Chinese bamboo flute), with the Traditional Instrument Ensemble of the Shanghai Beijing Opera Troupe (上海京剧团民乐队). Gusu (姑苏) is an old name for the city of Suzhou, in southeastern Jiangsu province, China.
The piece was composed in 1962 by the Chinese composer Jiang Xianwei (江先渭, 1924-2014), and the version heard here was probably adjusted by Yu Xunfa. It is unknown who made the arrangement for the ensemble accompaniment.
The piece's slow main melody (beginning at 0:55, and returning at 2:28) is adapted from "Xiao Baimen" 《小拜门》, a qupai ("named tune") from Kunqu (昆曲), China's tradition of classical theater dating back to the Ming Dynasty. This tune is also known as "Xiao Liu Yaojin" 《小柳摇金》, and is essentially an augmented form of the qupai "Jie Jie Gao" 《节节高》, with melodic elaboration.
Recorded in 1975. From "The Moon is High: Folk Instrumental Music" 《月儿高：民族器乐曲》, a 7-inch disc released by China Record Company in 1978 (M-2328). The composer Jiang Xianwei is not credited in the record's jacket notes; the piece is simply called a "folk music piece" (民间乐曲).
This record was acquired by Alan Canfora of Ohio, United States during a trip to China in the summer of 1978.
