Carl W. Stalling (November 10, 1891 – November 29, 1972) was an American composer and arranger for music in animated films. He is most closely associated with the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies shorts produced by Warner Bros., where he averaged one complete score each week, for 22 years.
Stalling was born to Ernest and Sophia C. Stalling. His parents were from Germany; his father arrived in the United States in 1883. The family settled in Lexington, Missouri where his father was a carpenter. He started playing piano at six. By the age of 12, he was the principal piano accompanist in his hometown's silent movie house. For a short period, he was also the theatre organist at the St. Louis Theatre, which eventually became Powell Symphony Hall.
By his early 20s, he was conducting his own orchestra and improvising on the organ at the Isis Movie Theatre in Kansas City. During that time, he met and befriended a young Walt Disney who was producing animated comedy shorts in Kansas City. Stalling composed several early cartoon scores for Walt Disney, including Plane Crazy and The Gallopin' Gaucho in 1928 (but not Steamboat Willie, Disney's first released sound short), and even spoke Mickey Mouse's first words in The Karnival Kid in 1929. Early discussions with Disney about whether the animation or the musical score should come first led to Disney creating the Silly Symphonies series of cartoons. These cartoons allowed Stalling to create a score that Disney handed to his animators. While there, Stalling pioneered the use of "bar sheets," which allowed musical rhythms to be sketched out simultaneously with storyboards for the animation.
Looney Tunes is an American animated series of comedy short films produced by Warner Bros. from 1930 to 1969 during the golden age of American animation, alongside its sister series Merrie Melodies. Drawing inspiration for its name from Walt Disney's then-concurrent musical series Silly Symphonies, Looney Tunes initially showcased Warner-owned musical compositions through the adventures of cartoon characters such as Bosko and Buddy.
Later, following the animation studio's addition of directors Tex Avery and Chuck Jones among others, as well as the voice actor Mel Blanc, Looney Tunes rose to greater fame for introducing such cartoon stars as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Tweety Bird, Sylvester the Cat, Yosemite Sam, Foghorn Leghorn, Marvin the Martian, Pepé Le Pew, Speedy Gonzales, Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, the Tasmanian Devil and many others. These characters themselves are commonly referred to as the "Looney Tunes" (or "Looney Toons"). From 1942 to 1964, Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies were the most popular animated shorts in movie theaters, exceeding the works of Disney and other popular competitors including Fleischer Studios, Walter Lantz Productions, UPA, Terrytoons and MGM.
Milton J. "Milt" Franklyn (September 16, 1897 – April 24, 1962) was a musical composer and arranger who worked on the Warner Bros. Looney Tunes animated cartoons.
Franklyn moved from New York to Salt Lake City at the age of three, where he went to high school and finished one year at the University of Utah. He was the state junior tennis champion in Utah for six years. The next two years were spent at the University of California, Berkeley, then he began a term at Pennsylvania University when he was called to service in World War One. Franklyn did not serve overseas; he trained as a naval officer for three months and then the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918. He returned to Berkeley to finish his education.
As Franklyn could play a number of instruments, he joined a band in San Francisco and for the next few years played at the Palace and St. Francis hotels. He began his own nine-piece orchestra, known at various times as the Peninsula Band, the Super Soloists, and the Merrimakers, and appeared in San Mateo (1926 to June 1927), where he also owned a music store, and San Jose (1928 to January 1929), where he was Master of Ceremonies and wrote revues for the California Theatre before moving on to Fresno and Oakland. For two years he was emcee with Fanchon and Marco at Fox West Coast in San Diego; musical director and emcee with Paramount Publix Corporation, travelling to Seattle, Denver, Houston and Toledo; and finally worked on the Loew's circuit in Providence, Rhode Island and New York City from 1933 to 1935. Franklyn quit vaudeville to go to Hollywood in 1935 and spent a year doing occasional work.

Over the span of the Looney Tunes cartoons, there were numerous variations of its famous theme song, "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down." This was especially true when Carl Stalling was doing the music for the Warner cartoons, but there were not as many variations as "Merrily We Roll Along." This includes most (if not all) of these Carl Stalling arrangements, along with the 1955 Milt Franklyn version, and the infamous (and STRANGE) Bill Lava versions of the 1960s (but I steer away from that pseudo-jazzy version used on "The Looney Tunes Show!") I also left out the variation from "Box-Office Bunny," because this is only to cover the classic era of Looney Tunes. The first of "4 Seasons" Silly Symphonies; Flowers, ladybugs, centipedes, birds, and frogs dance (and devour each other!) in time to the usual blend of themes from the light classics. This short was released October 24 1929, the same day the stock market crashed; leading to the Great Depression. Director: Walt Disney
Born in 1891 Carl Stalling began his career as a theater organist in the days before films had soundtracks. He would compose music for the films live at the organ several times every night. Stalling was hired by Walt Disney to score music for Disney's "Silly Symphony" cartoons. There he invented the "tick" method, where a tempo map was created with a metronome so that the composer could match the on-screen action to a particular beat. With this click track, Stalling could then pre-record the soundtrack and the animators could use his tempo map to animate. In 1930 Stalling left Disney to work exclusively for Warner Brothers, where he now had access to Warner's vast publishing catalog and could incorporate many popular songs into the cartoons. Because of Stalling's tick method, almos...

The rates of type 2 diabetes are continuing to rise even among the young. This is likely to get much worse given the continuing worldwide increase of overweight and obesity. Because type 2 diabetes is a nutritional wear and tear disease our best hope to contain costs and have any chance of halting this epidemic is prevention. There are stages of metabolic imbalances involving insulin and blood sugar regulation that lead up to type 2 diabetes that can be measured. Once these are recognized steps can be taken to reverse these early imbalances. The use of a low carbohydrate, ketogenic diet has been show for decades in clinical practice and in research published in the last 15 years to address these imbalances and decrease the risk of developing diabetes. PBS American Experience S26E02 - Ripley: Believe It Or Not (2015) Narrated by Oscar winner actor Oliver Platt. LeRoy Robert Ripley rose to fame during the Great Depression, transforming himself from a skinny, buck-toothed boy into an entertainer who mesmerized the nation with his razzle-dazzle blend of homespun Americana, colourful exotica and freakish oddities. Over 3 decades, his "Believe It Or Not" franchise grew into an entertainment empire, expanding from newspapers to every form of "new media" in the 20th century: radio, film, and ultimately, commercial television. At the centre of it all was Ripley, whose obsession with the odd and keen eye for the curious made him one of the richest men in the country. Americans not only loved his bizarre fare, but were fascinated by the man hi...

"I love Carl Stalling, who did the old Warner Bros. cartoons — although I didn't want to do that specific kind of quick, jumpy ... you know, where the music follows the action. So, although I love Carl Stalling, he was out." For the Hollywood Bowl's 2015 season, the mu...

http://CppCon.org — Presentation Slides, PDFs, Source Code and other presenter materials are available at: https://github.com/CppCon/CppCon2017 — Automated trading involves submitting electronic orders rapidly when opportunities arise. But it’s harder than it seems: either your system is the fastest and you make the trade, or you get nothing. This is a considerable challenge for any C++ developer - the critical path is only a fraction of the total codebase, it is invoked infrequently and unpredictably, yet must execute quickly and without delay. Unfortunately we can’t rely on the help of compilers, operating systems and standard hardware, as they typically aim for maximum throughput and fairness across all processes. This talk describes how successful low latency trading systems can be...

Here is the single frame shot of the show I saw on November 17, 2009. This is the whole thing I think. They were supporting the Mad Valentines EP, but when they heard I was a fanatic for Flight of the Knife, the set list was adjusted to make me squirm. Nicest guys you could hope to meet. Awesome arrangements of those tunes - there are Carl Stalling moments to be celebrated. Also note the blistering version of Another Ace in the Hole from the upcoming Daffy's Elixir - I think you can actually hear my spleen hitting the floor, or maybe that was on Andromeda's Eyes...not to mention they were incredibly gracious to me while I drooled. I love this band, and the greatness of the performance wasn't lost on me. Proves to me why traveling to see a Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears show makes perf...
