Amazing Grace (Description Français ~ English) Amazing Grace est l'une des hymnes chrétiennes les plus célèbres dans le monde anglophone. La première publication des paroles écrites date de 1779. Associée à diverses mélodies au fil des années, elle est aujourd'hui connue sous l'air musical de New Britain. Le thème de cette hymne évoque la rémission des péchés par la foi en Dieu, ce qui renvoie à l'origine de son écriture par John Newton, un pécheur repenti. En français, son titre est traduit de différentes façons, dont aucune ne semble s'imposer et c'est généralement le titre anglais qui est maintenu. Les paroles sont écrites par le prêtre anglican John Newton, probablement en 1760 ou 1761, et publiées par Newton et William Cowper en 1779, dans la collection des Olney Hymns qui connut un grand succès en Angleterre. John Newton (1725–1807) était initialement le capitaine d'un navire négrier et était connu pour sa débauche morale. Le 10 mai 1748, au cours d'une tempête dans l'Atlantique où son bateau risqua de couler, il se convertit au christianisme. Après avoir survécu à cette tempête, il devint prêtre anglican et renonça au trafic d'esclaves, au point de devenir militant de la cause abolitionniste. Une grande partie des paroles de l'hymne provient du Nouveau Testament. La première strophe par exemple renvoie à l'histoire du fils prodigue : dans l'évangile selon Luc, le père dit que « [son fils] était mort et il est vivant, il était perdu et il est retrouvé ». L'histoire de Jésus guérissant un aveugle, qui dit ensuite aux Pharisiens qu'il peut désormais voir est racontée dans l'évangile selon Jean. Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life's path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by his recalcitrant insubordination. He was pressed (involuntarily forced) into service in the Royal Navy, and after leaving the service, he became involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent storm battered his vessel off the coast of County Donegal, Ireland so severely that he called out to God for mercy, a moment that marked his spiritual conversion. Whilst his boat was being repaired in Lough Swilly, he wrote the first verse of his world famous song. He did however, continue his slave trading career until 1754 or 1755, when he ended his seafaring altogether and began studying Christian theology. Ordained in the Church of England in 1764, Newton became curate of Olney, Buckinghamshire, where he began to write hymns with poet William Cowper. "Amazing Grace" was written to illustrate a sermon on New Year's Day of 1773. It is unknown if there was any music accompanying the verses; it may have simply been chanted by the congregation. It debuted in print in 1779 in Newton and Cowper's Olney Hymns but settled into relative obscurity in England. In the United States however, "Amazing Grace" was used extensively during the Second Great Awakening in the early 19th century. It has been associated with more than 20 melodies, but in 1835 it was joined to a tune named "New Britain" to which it is most frequently sung today.
