"Rhythm Nation" is a song by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released as the second single from her fourth studio album, Rhythm Nation 1814. It was written, composed, and produced by Jackson, in collaboration with James "Jimmy Jam" Harris III and Terrence "Terry" Lewis. Its production incorporates dance-pop and industrial music, also using elements of hip-hop and funk rock. Jackson developed the song's concept in response to various tragedies in the media, deciding to pursue a socially conscious theme by using a political standpoint within upbeat dance music. The song received positive reception from critics, who commended its "military-style beats" within "a grand pop statement." In the United States, it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Dance Club Songs singles charts. It also reached number two in Canada, Japan, and South Africa, nine in the Netherlands and France, top fifteen of Italy and Belgium, and top twenty of New Zealand, Sweden, and Ireland, among other countries. It has been included in two of Jackson's greatest hits collections, Design of a Decade: 1986–1996 (1995) and Number Ones (2009).
Nation (from Latin: natio, "people, tribe, kin, genus, class, flock") is a social concept with no uncontroversial definition, but that is most commonly used to designate larger groups or collectives of people with common characteristics attributed to them—including language, traditions, customs (mores), habits (habitus), and ethnicity. A nation, by comparison, is more impersonal, abstract, and overtly political than an ethnic group. It is a cultural-political community that has become conscious of its autonomy, unity, and particular interests.
According to Joseph Stalin: "a nation is not a racial or tribal, but a historically constituted community of people;" "a nation is not a casual or ephemeral conglomeration, but a stable community of people"; "a nation is formed only as a result of lengthy and systematic intercourse, as a result of people living together generation after generation"; and, in its entirety: "a nation is a historically constituted, stable community of people, formed on the basis of a common language, territory, economic life, and psychological make-up manifested in a common culture."
Janet Damita Jo Jackson (born May 16, 1966) is an American singer, songwriter, dancer and actress. Known for a series of sonically innovative, socially conscious and sexually provocative records, as well as elaborate stage shows, television and film roles, she has been a prominent figure in popular culture for over 30 years. The youngest child of the Jackson family, she began her career with the variety television series The Jacksons in 1976 and went on to appear in other television shows throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, including Good Times and Fame.
After signing a recording contract with A&M Records arranged by her father and manager Joseph Jackson in 1982, she became a pop icon following the release of her third studio album Control (1986). Her collaborations with record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis incorporated elements of rhythm and blues, funk, disco, rap, and industrial beats, which led to crossover success in popular music. In addition to receiving recognition for the innovation in her records, choreography, music videos, and prominence on radio airplay and MTV, she was acknowledged as a role model for her socially conscious lyrics.
American Dad! is an American adult animated sitcom created by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker, and Matt Weitzman for the Fox Broadcasting Company.American Dad! is the first television series to have its inception on Animation Domination. The series premiere aired on February 6, 2005, following Super Bowl XXXIX, three months before the rest of the first season aired as part of the Animation Domination block, commencing on May 1, 2005.
Creative direction of American Dad! has largely been guided by Barker (prior to his exit from the show in season 10) and Weitzman as opposed to MacFarlane, resulting in a series that is different from its counterparts. Unlike its sister shows, Family Guy and The Cleveland Show, American Dad! does not lean as heavily on the use of cutaway gags, and is less concerned with conventional "setup-punchline" jokes, instead deriving its humor mostly from the quirky characters, the relationships between family members, and the relatively relatable plots. The show is not as heavy on pop cultural allusions as MacFarlane's Family Guy, and is more concerned with telling stories while maintaining the integrity and realism of the family members. While the core issues and resolutions are relatable in most episodes, the show nonetheless weaves in fantastical elements, pitching the tone of the show somewhere between observational comedy and farce. The plots are often absurd, but they are grounded by family stories and real-world issues.
Happy Feet is a 2006 Australian-American computer-animated musical family film, directed, produced and co-written by George Miller. It stars Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Brittany Murphy, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, and Hugo Weaving. It was produced at Sydney-based visual effects and animation studio Animal Logic for Warner Bros., Village Roadshow Pictures and Kingdom Feature Productions and was released in North American theaters on 17 November 2006. It is the first animated film produced by Kennedy Miller in association with visual effects/design company Animal Logic.
Though primarily an animated film, Happy Feet does incorporate motion capture of live action humans in certain scenes. The film was simultaneously released in both conventional theatres and in IMAX 2D format. The studio had hinted that a future IMAX 3D release was a possibility. However, Warner Bros., the film’s production company, was on too tight a budget to release Happy Feet in IMAX digital 3D.
Happy Feet won the BAFTA Award for Best Animated Film and the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature for Warner Bros., and was nominated for the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature and the Saturn Award for Best Animated Film.

It is such a treat to welcome dancer, choreographer and entrepreneur, Jimmy Locust to The Kelly Alexander Show celebrating the 25th anniversary of Rhythm Nation. Jimmy was a principal dancer in the Rhythm Nation project and features prominently in the “Miss You Much” video. Jimmy reminisces about working with Janet, the power and influence of Rhythm Nation and just how special of an artist and human being Janet really is.
We speak with renowned dancer and choreographer, Terry Bixler. Terry was friends with Janet before the Rhythm Nation project had even started and when the project launched he was all over it, from dancing in the videos to being on the world tour and of course being responsible for the epic moves behind the “Miss You Much” chair dance routine. Terry’s got lots of stories to tell from the Rhythm Nation era and we’re happy to listen.
We are thrilled to welcome to The Kelly Alexander Show an icon in the world of dance, world-renowned choreographer, Tina Landon, talking about the 25th anniversary of Janet Jackson’s hit album, “Rhythm Nation 1814.” Tina was a part of the Rhythm Nation project, videos and world tour back in 1990.
