Dwight David Yoakam (born October 23, 1956) is an American singer-songwriter, actor and film director, most famous for his pioneering country music. Popular since the early 1980s, he has recorded more than twenty one albums and compilations, charted more than thirty singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, and sold more than 25 million records. He has recorded five Billboard #1 albums, twelve gold albums, and nine platinum albums, including the triple platinum This Time. In addition to his many achievements in the performing arts, he is also the most frequent musical guest in the history of The Tonight Show.
Yoakam was born in Pikeville, Kentucky, the son of Ruth Ann (née Tibbs), a key-punch operator, and David Yoakam, a gas-station owner. He was raised in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from Northland High School in 1974. During his high school years, he excelled in both music and drama, regularly securing the lead role in school plays, such as "Charlie" in a stage version of Flowers for Algernon, honing his skills under the guidance of teacher-mentors Jerry McAfee (music) and Charles Lewis (drama). Outside of school, he sang and played guitar with local garage bands, and entertained his friends and classmates with his impersonations, such as Richard Nixon, who, at the time, was heavily embroiled in the Watergate controversy.

Lyrics Girl, you taught me how to hurt real bad And cry myself to sleep And showed me how this town can shatter dreams Another lesson 'bout a naive fool Who came to Babylon And found out that the pie Don't taste so sweet Now it's guitars, cadillacs, hillbilly music Lonely, lonely streets that I call home Yea, my guitars, cadillacs, hillbilly music It's the only thing that keep me hangin' on Ain't no glamour in this tinsle land Of lost and wasted lives Painful scars are all that's left of me I wanna thank-you girl for teachin' me Brand new ways to be cruel Like findin' mine now I guess I'll just leave And it's guitars, cadillacs, hillbilly music Lonely, lonely streets that I call home Yea, my guitars, cadillacs, hillbilly music It's the only thing that keep me h...

The Disney Channel broadcast the world premiere of Dwight Yoakam's television special "DWIGHT LIVE" on May 5, 1996. The 60-minute show featured live concert footage recorded at the final stop on his sold-out and critically-acclaimed "THIS TIME" tour -- July 30, 1994 at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco. The audio from that concert was also used to compile the 1995 album "DWIGHT LIVE" that featured 17 songs by the trail-blazing songwriter and Grammy Award winner. This Disney Channel exclusive TV Special also included conversational interludes between Yoakam and actor Dennis Hopper as they haunted various Hollywood locales including the landmark Roosevelt Hotel.

"Please, Please Baby" from Dwight Yoakam's Live From Austin Texas performance. Buy it today on Amazon http://amzn.to/1a9dpeo or iTunes http://smarturl.it/YoakamLFAT. Recorded 10/23/1988. Twentysomething Dwight Yoakam was literally the new kid in country music when he stepped onto the Austin City Limits® stage. Early on he discovered the fabled "Bakersfield" sound and adopted it as his own, in the tradition of country legends Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. Buck, in fact, became his hero and friend. When Dwight was playing a fair in Bakersfield, he stopped by Buck's office and coaxed him into playing a few songs with him onstage that night. The result was a lasting friendship and their historic duet, "Streets of Bakersfield."
A montage of the sold out Dwight Yoakam concert at the Grey Eagle Casino on May 2, 2014. A funny part, during Streets of Bakersfield, Dwight stops to explain why he and the band were late for the concert. Sorry for the shakiness, the bleachers we were sitting on were rocking back and forth like crazy. Dwight sang Long White Cadillac for the encore, and then came out for a second encore to sing Suspicious Minds.
Dwight Yoakam performs "Honky Tonk Man" live at the Farm Aid concert in Austin, Texas on July 4, 1986. Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001. For more information about Farm Aid, visit: http://farmaid.org/youtube Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help — what can you do?

Take hold of my hand
And I'll do what I can
To make everything right
At least for tonight
If you'll just take hold of my hand
Press your lips against mine
And I promise to find
A way out of the pain
Some place safe from the rain
If you'll just press your lips on mine
I've lusted for love but lust is so blind
And trust for a heart is a hard thing to find
But what's left of yours might help to heal mine
Come and lay here by me
And I swear you will see
That hurt from before
Don't live there no more
If you'll just come and lay here by me
I've lusted for love but lust is so blind
And trust for a heart is a heard thing to find
But what's lefr of yours might help to heal mine
Take hold of my hand
And I'll do what I can
To make everything right
At least for tonight
