Elizabeth Virginia "Bess" Truman (née Wallace) (February 13, 1885 – October 18, 1982), was the wife of U.S. President Harry S. Truman and First Lady of the United States from 1945 to 1953.
She had known her future husband since they were children attending the same school in Independence, Missouri. As First Lady, she did not enjoy the social and political scene in Washington, and at the end of her husband's term in 1953, she was relieved to return to Independence. She currently holds the record of longest-lived First Lady, having reached the age of 97 at the time of her death.
Bess Truman was born Elizabeth Virginia Wallace on February 13, 1885, to David Willock Wallace (1860–1903) and his wife, the former Margaret Elizabeth Gates (1862–1952), in Independence, Missouri, and was known as Bessie during her childhood. She was the eldest of four; three brothers: Frank Gates Wallace, (4 March 1887 – 12 August 1960), George Porterfield Wallace, (1 May 1892 – 24 May 1963), David Frederick Wallace, (7 January 1900 – 30 September 1957).
Truman is a name of English origin that can be traced back to the Devon region of England. It may refer to:
See Truman (surname).
Harry S. Truman (May 8, 1884 – December 26, 1972) was the 33rd President of the United States (1945–53), an American politician of the Democratic Party. He served as a United States Senator from Missouri (1935–45) and briefly as Vice President (1945) before he succeeded to the presidency on April 12, 1945 upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was president during the final months of World War II, making the decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Truman was elected in his own right in 1948. He presided over an uncertain domestic scene as America sought its path after the war, and tensions with the Soviet Union increased, marking the start of the Cold War.
Truman was born in Lamar, Missouri and spent most of his youth on his family's farm near Independence. In the last months of World War I, he served in combat in France as an artillery officer with his National Guard unit. After the war, he briefly owned a haberdashery in Kansas City, Missouri, and joined the Democratic Party and the political machine of Tom Pendergast. Truman was first elected to public office as a county official in 1926, and then as a U.S. Senator in 1935. He gained national prominence as chairman of the Truman Committee, formed in March 1941, which exposed waste, fraud, and corruption in Federal Government wartime contracts.
The White House is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of the United States, located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800.
The house was designed by Irish-born James Hoban and built between 1792 and 1800 of white-painted Aquia Creek sandstone in the Neoclassical style. When Thomas Jefferson moved into the house in 1801, he (with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe) expanded the building outward, creating two colonnades that were meant to conceal stables and storage. However, in 1814, during the War of 1812, the mansion was set ablaze by the British Army in the Burning of Washington, destroying the interior and charring much of the exterior. Reconstruction began almost immediately, and President James Monroe moved into the partially reconstructed Executive Residence in October 1817. Construction continued with the addition of the South Portico in 1824 and the North in 1829.
Bess or BESS may refer to:
Melania Trump's reclusiveness much like Bess Truman

Miss Truman visita La Habana, acompañada de su hija. (1948) Bess found the White House's lack of privacy distasteful. As her husband put it later, she was "not especially interested" in the "formalities and pomp or the artificiality which, as we had learned..., inevitably surround the family of the President Harry Truman." Though she steadfastly fulfilled the social obligations of her position, she did only what she thought was necessary. When the White House was rebuilt during Truman's second term, the family lived in Blair House and kept their social life to a minimum. In most years of her husband's presidency Mrs. Truman did not live in Washington other than during the social season when her presence was expected.[citation needed] The contrast with Bess's activist predecessor Eleanor R...
The spotlight did not appeal to Bess Truman. "She would return home to Independence as often as possible, leaving the President feeling very alone, often desolate," says historian David McCullough. "It's hard for some people to understand what she was like, and why the President was so devoted to her."
There was a bit of scandal between Harry S. Truman and the newly-minted President Eisenhower as Harry left the White House. But from the Washington, DC, train station, all the way back to Independence, Missouri, Harry was greeted with the smiling faces of grateful Americans. At the end, Harry and Bess stand side by side as Harry addresses the Missourians who came to pay their respects. Bess and Harry just remind me of a happy quaint old couple, without too much interesting or exciting going on. Harry Truman courted Bess for 29 years, and finally convinced her to marry him after constantly being rejected from marriage for 9 years. He had 0 other girlfriends his entire life and at the time was a poor farmer. He entered politics at age 40 and became President at age 50. Persistence is a big theme of his life. This is a mirror of the original to allow comments.

http://thefilmarchive.org/ March 14, 2012 In the United States, a state dinner is a formal dinner, more often black tie in recent years rather than white tie, which is held in honor of a foreign head of state, such as a king, queen, president, or any head of government. A state dinner is hosted by the President of the United States and held in the State Dining Room at the White House in Washington D.C. Other formal dinners for important people of other nations, such as a prince or princess, are called official dinners, the difference being that the federal government does not pay for them. This week on Q&A;, our guest is Aida Donald, author of "Citizen Soldier: A Life of Harry S. Truman." The book traces Harry Truman's early life and entry into politics to the end of his presidency. Donald discusses how the 33rd President's early career was characterized by his efforts to remain honest despite the corruption present in local Missouri politics. She cites his writings known as the Pickwick Papers, named for the hotel Truman frequented in Kansas City. She also talks about Harry's courtship of Bess Wallace, whom he would later marry, and the lifelong impact she felt as a result of her own father's suicide. Mrs. Donald recounts Truman's election to the United States Senate and his nomination to be Franklin Roosevelt's running mate in the 1944 presidential election.
