Within a six-week cycle, Adae has two celebration days, once on a Sunday (Akwasidae) and again on a Wednesday (Awukudae). The Adae cycle is repeated nine times in a year. In observance of the Akan calendar, the ninth Adae Festival, called the Adae Kese Festival ("big Adae"), coincides with celebration of the New Year. It is therefore celebrated to thank the gods and the ancestors for the new harvest. The festivals within Adae are not interchangeable, having been fixed from ancient times.

The next day, I got ready for my next excursion... a trip to "Kumasi", the capital of the traditional land of the Ashanti people (or "Asante" in the native language). We have all heard of the word "Ashanti" either through music or the media. They are actually an ethnic group that lives in present day Ghana. They have a King that is the symbolic head of the kingdom. The monarchy is based on matrilineal descent, and the King and his Mother (the Queen Mother) rule in a quasi co-regent status. Since it is matrilineal, the King's son does not take over the thrown when he passes. It is his sister's son that becomes King and the sister rules with her son as the Queen Mother. On our way to Kumasi from Accra, you pass some of the most beautiful mountain forests. We passed the house of the wife of t...

Ghana Travel Guide - Ghana is a very friendly country, ideal for first time travellers to Africa, the people are generally very helpful and welcoming. While their laidback attitude and lack of organized tourist sights/trips can be a little annoying to begin with, before you have been there for very long you realize that it is one of the delights of this country. There is archaeological evidence which shows that humans have lived in what is present day Ghana from about 1500 BC. Oral tradition has it that many of Ghana's current ethnic groups such as the multi-ethnic Akan, the Ga and the Ewe arrived around the 13th Century AD. The Travel Industry in Ghana is growing very quickly, and more tour operators are seeing increased requests for Ghana as a travel destination. Ghana is also rich in...

As retailers, wholesalers, and negotiators, Asante women of Ghana dominate the huge Kumasi Central Market amid the laughter, argument, colour and music. The crew of this Disappearing World film have jumped into the fray, explored, and tried to explain the complexities of the market and its traders. The success of this crew is impressive. As the film was to be about women traders, an all female film crew was selected and the rapport between the two groups of women is remarkable. The relationship was no doubt all the stronger because the anthropologist acting as advisor to the crew, Charlotte Boaitey, is herself an Asante. The people open up for the interviewers, telling them about their lives as traders, about differences between men and women, in their perception of their society and also ...
http://www.expressoshow.com/ Graeme heads to the iconic Kaneshie Market in Accra/Ghana, to give us his survival guide for an African market. We cover various shopping tips as he explores this bustling environment. Firstly, know what you’re after and when the best time is to get it. Haggle on the price (when this is an accepted custom of the region), know your currency and value of the exchange rate. Be aware of your personal belongings, and remember your bearings (as not to get lost when you’ve finished shopping).
I was always told that you had to have the balls to breakdown
Now I'm older I'm not too sure
I was once told that you had to have a high to lowdown
An expert told me back in the war
Broken hearted surgery never works
So eat your words or hide them in the dirt
Raise up the anchor baby, why do we have to get way down?
